LongestHorn overtly brings race into it, and apparently believes all American cops are wannabe killers, some just haven't had the chance to live out their murderous dreams yet. I offered him the chance to modify his blanket condemnation to "some cops", and he flatly refused.

That was dumb, because this cop just gave the guy a defense if anyone tries to charge the man with assaulting a police officer. I still wouldn't have touched him, but he's pretty much in the clear. And of course, the cop will likely be in trouble.

Sadly, it's much bigger than just cops. People cover for others in their tribe. Cops often cover for crappy cops. Teachers, lawyers, doctors frequently cover for their crappy compadres. Politicians sometimes rat out other politicians, but it's almost always to gain some sort of advantage for themselves, not out of conscience.
