Here is what Bohls and Golden said today...

Q: How much pressure does Gail Goestenkors have now that Baylor and A&M have won national championships?

Bohls: A ton, unless Texas has totally thrown up the white flag and surrendered. Gail is the fifth-highest paid coach in women's hoops, and four years with one tournament win is clearly — or should be — unacceptable. I see next year as make or break.

Golden:Gary Blair didn't do Coach G any favors by knocking off Notre Dame. Texas is fourth at best in the Big 12 right now behind A&M, Baylor and OU. This is a make or break year for her. If Texas doesn't go deep in the NCAAs, I could see the Coach G era ending.

So what exactly will it take next season for GG to get a new contract? You guys have watched more women's Bball than me. Tell me what it takes to convince Plonsky to stay with the current. Augie saved his in 2000 with a Omaha trip. Does she need to win the B12, B12 Tourney? Or how many NCAA Tourney wins does she need next year? Final four? Your thoughts?

One thing to keep in mind, she's on the hot seat according to the sports reporters that cover men's athletics. I'm not sure how hot the seat is being made by Plonsky. she clearly doesn't have the same approach as Donna Lopiano. Next year she'll be really distracted with the first year of the Longhorn Network so starting a coaching search to replace a coach with a winning record doesn't seem like it would be high on her list.

I think the fans and certain media have her on a hot seat. To placate them, I think she needs to finish in the Top3/4 in conference and make at least the Sweet 16. Finishing in the Top 3 in conference should be a lot more achievable with a healthy roster and the new Big 12 schedule. Two teams (ISU and KSU) that finished in the top half of the conference pick up 5 more games against teams that finished in the the top half of the conference. They will realize how tough this conference is when they no longer have home and homes only with the bottom half of the conference and one game a piece with the top.

Making the Sweet 16 seems to be more of mountain to climb as her teams at Texas have not achieved much in the tourney.

Not to nitpick, but that wasn't "today". It was a day or two after A&M won their game last Tuesday night.

I look forward to next season!
Coach G will be fine.Next year will save her job though!
They should at least make the Sweet 16
The team will be that good next year!

A sweep by A&M, Baylor and Oklahoma does not bode well for Coach G. Split the series with the Top 3 is a minimum expectation. Being competitive and not being blown out of the water is not too much to ask for.

sorry moooo my mistake; thought they had done a summary of todays chat where the same issues came up. They both said it was make or break with Golden saying three NCAA Tourney wins was a min for a contract renew. Still love to hear what you think it would take to be like 'Augie's 2000 Omaha save your UT career' moment.

Here is Golden's quote: A Big 12 title won't happen but they would have to win two or three games in the NCAA Tournament to make things better. I'm skeptical about them getting it done with Griner back for two years and A&M rising to power.

Here is Bohls' quote: If I were the AD (and yes, I'm not), I would tell Gail her team has to show considerable improvement and probably at least get to the Sweet 16 if not further. Final Four? Are you kidding? Is Clarissa Davis coming back?

I believe Texas signed Coach G to a 7 year contract. As much as this pains me to say this, she will likely remain the Coach should it be another mediocre year.

I believe it's a 5 year deal with this being the final year. So I think it's truly make or break. And hopefully we will all be posting about how excited we are that she signed an extension in the near future. And seattle I enjoy most of your posts from the entertainment perspective, I just really would like to know who you think could've come in and done a better job thus far having to deal with all of the struggles on and off the court Gail has had to endure

I know some people think everything is fine while others believe the opposite. I’m fine with that. But, most of the talking heads really start to sound silly to me when they talk about this stuff. It doesn’t seem to matter what sport or what level. It’s like they have a template in their heads, just fill in the name of the team and coach, and press play. This team must win this game or else…fill in the blank.

I don’t think coach G is on the hot seat now. What aggy does isn’t important. If Texas does what it needs to do that will take care of itself. I see a long term plan coming together, even if it has taken longer than anyone wanted to get to the type roster we should see this coming season. I agree that 2011-12 is very, very important and really must demonstrate improvement and progress rather than hint it could be coming. If that doesn’t happen in 2011-12 I could see a hot seat warming up quickly. But, it isn’t going to be determined by the number of wins in the NCAA tournament. Strange things can happen in one game. Player evaluations are not based on one game, much less the future of your head coach.

Texas needs to put together the type resume over the course of a full season that leads to a tournament seeding high enough to be favored in multiple games. Evaluations will be based on that full season, player development, recruiting, and the perceived direction of the program. I know the tournament is important, and it is part of the evaluation. But, if we see another so-so season and poor seeding followed by a surprising tournament run it will not mean everything is fixed. If we see a solid season and good seeding followed by a surprising early tournament loss it will not be a death blow. The next step for Texas is to put together consistent quality performances over the course of a full season, regardless of the level of competition. Anything beyond that is gravy at this point………Of course, that gravy is really, really tasty.

Anyway, that is pretty much where I am with this. I want to see a season that justifies a tournament seeding of 4 or better. That is pretty much my over/under. Higher is a pleasant surprise, and less is disappointing. I’m not so concerned with how they get there, and don’t require any specific number of tournament wins. I just want that full season that demonstrates progress beyond any reasonable doubt.

utfannforlife:

It is 7 years... just re-read the hiring of Coach G on ESPN.

As for who I thought Texas should have hired back in 2007, I would have preferred a coach who has ties to the state of Texas and was associated with the Longhorn program in one form or another. My vote would have been Karen Aston, who recruited well in Texas. She may not have been the high profile coach that Texas wanted but I would garner her first 4 years at Texas would have been more respectful than the results we've seen under Coach G. Her years working for Conradt not to mention her short time with Mulkey would have been an asset to Texas. I don't know why she left Texas when she did.

I liked Jeff Walz who jumped to Louisville from Maryland in 2007, who was an assistant under Coach Friese, but he's an ACC guy just like Goestenkors w/o any Texas ties. Had Nikki Caldwell been available 1 year earlier, I would have wanted her to lead Texas. Yeah, no Texas ties, but she excelled as a player in Tennessee plus served in an assistant capacity under Summit. She was also young, vibrant, and full of promise.

I don't believe that big money buys or guarantees success.

So I am of the believer that this "honeymoon" is definitely over. I'll temper my darts @ Coach G until next season.

Seattle - So you are not planning to following Coach G's twitter from her vacation ? Previously she gave updates from Colorado. The tweets will accentuate the off season.

Don't temper your comments. You bring reality and balance.

That would not have been a good decision at the time and it also would have pointed to a huge double standard in womens sports. In mens bb you will never see a no name assistant without previous head coaching experience take over at a powerhouse like Texas and follow a legend like Jody. And yes in 2007 waltz and caldwell were no name. And Ashton was a great recruiter at Texas but that is because she was speaking on behalf of someone else like Jody. It's much different when your asking kids to come and play for you when you don't have a track record. And in my opinion who ever was hired would have suffered the same trials and tribulations Gail is going through. They were unavoidable. Just from my analysis of the program

There is huge difference between talking about a program, or coach - critically or otherwise - and waging a campaign against someone for no reason other than personal (and unfonded) dislike. We should be absolutely clear here; the whole issue of hiring a coach with so-called Texas ties has nothing whatsoever to do with Seattle's problems with Coach G. It was certainly fair to have a discussion about not retaining an assistant with knowledge of the local recruiting scene, and that has been addressed by many on this fourm. But to now suggest that Texas should have hired someone like Walz, Caldwell or Aston - or even considered them - is ridiculous. There was a very short list of candidates who might have been considered to replace Jody (the program's first coaching change in over 30 years), and GG was clearly at the top of that list. The others you mention woudn't have been a part of the conversation in 2007, nor should they have been. To imply you didn't want GG because she lacked local, or in-state ties is simply not true.

You're the ridiculous one overseas. I was asked my opinion on who should have replaced Conradt and made my opinions known. Your problem is that you think Coach G is the answer to all of Texas' problems and feel justified that she deserves the 1 million dollar salary. If anything, Goestenkors should feel that her credibility has been tarnished with the results of the past 4 years. Who was once regarded as a bright shining star is now relegated to "has been" status. Until she can "prove" that she can caoch and turn the Texas program around, she and Texas are irrelevant.

You're just jealous and angry that Coach G is not well liked by everyone, including me.

Torre: updates? I stopped following her twitter after the A&M championship. Out of morbid curiosity, I just checked and see no updates since 12 days ago.

Btw, Mulkey was gracious to even congratulate Blair on the win in her twitter.

I doubt that she's even close to "has been" status. She's the 3rd most succssful coach in the big 12 mulkey and Blair only get the nod because the have championships. But I'm sure gail would still get job offers before Blair. Theres not a program in the country aside from Baylor uconn and tenn and stanford that wouldn't take GG in a heart beat.

You could argue Coale is the 3rd most successful if you factor in just Big 12 body of work.

I have no doubt that other programs would take Coach G "in a heartbeat.". When you consider "fit" between her and Texas, it just doesn't fit like a glove (no pun intended).

You can't just take big 12 body of work though. That cuts off 80% of her career. And my point is that no one would fit like a glove but she is clearly the best fit IMO amd doing the best she can with what she has. As a coach I think my view is very different from most fans because a lot of the things she gets flack for on this site are not really coaching error it's more so the players. But I know the buck begins and ends with the coach at the end of the day.

Seattle - Just being facetious about the twitter updates.

Keep posting to keep this board balanced !

Viper- I never tell my girls that, and no coach would ever make that statement publicly. But when we all get together for meetings or whatever the case may be, it's most certainly a topic. And that's just the facts. Missed Layups and unforced turnovers and missed free-throws are probably the most common thing that I hear blamed on coaches. And in actuality it's what we have the least control over. I've seen it drilled and drilled week in and week out, yet it keeps happening. As educated fans we have to know the difference in what the coach can and can't control
