Here comes the USC bashing again...

What I hate about USC is this cloak of infallibility they wear. It's been pretty well documented that their players -- Bush in particular, but also Leinart, and Mayo on the basketball side -- received pay for play in the form of money, homes, cheap rent, and NBA tickets, yet the NCAA doesn't seem to have any interest in punishment.

But I admire the way they recruit and the way they play. They're awfully good.

I don't have a problem with USC. Considering they had some questions about the health of their QB and had some disappointing losses last year, the #3 ranking was justified. Against Virginia they quickly proved the QB position was going to be fine, so they shoot up to #1. I'm cool with that too, especially because I was not sold on Georgia as a #1 team.

I don't like the fact that they are not getting punished for violating NCAA rules. So if there is a post about Reggie getting paid, and nothing happening to USC, you will probably see some posters pile on but we would do that if it was UCLA, VaTech or any other school with a high profile player that was obviously cheating.

I think it is ridiculous to have ANY polls before the start of October. At this point, it's more a beauty contest based on how well the team performed in its bowl game last year and returning starters.

As for USC... ambivalence here. They have played at a very high level for the last 5 years or so.. good for them.

But.. let's see what will happen assuming Bush testifies truthfully under oath this month.. and if dirt comes out, what the high sheriffs at the NCAA will do to them.. .especially since USC is not cooperating in the investigation.

Alleged improprieties involving Bush and Mayo are very troubling and indicate lack of institutional control.

I like USC and enjoy watching them play a high grade of football. The *** whipping they gave the land thieves in 2004 was the second best championship game ever. I am very thankful our D showed up during the first half of the 05 game and for the key stop in the fourth quarter. Along with Vince i give them equal credit in beating one of the best college teams ever.

I don't see why USC wouldn't be the #1 ranked team until they lose, same as the last four or five years. They have five star backups at several positions. Aside from LSU, nobody can line up against them talent-wise. Fortunately, only eleven are on the field at one time, but the Trojans still have an edge on special teams, depth, and when injuries occur that no team can match. If anything, wondercoach has underachieved with this much talent on hand over the past few years, despite their many successes.
This situation only makes UT's victory over USC that much more special-we beat one hell of a good team.
But arguing over #1 rankings early in the year, why bother. Most of it will shake out over the next few weeks when contenders get a loss.

USC is pretty clearly number one right now and justifiably got the the votes. They play a great OOC schedule and the Pac 10 while not the SEC or Big XII is no slouch. I respect USC for going anywhere and playing anybody OOC I wish Texas was as aggressive. The Trojans looks stout this year and MNC #3 is a real possibility.

The anger on this board though stems from 05 when the media willed Bush to the highest margin of victory for a Heisman ever. This in the only year a QB has ever thrown for 3k and rushed for 1k while leading his undefeated team to the MNC game. Bush winning was at least arguable though VY had a much better argument but Bush by that margin was ridiculous. That and the whole greatest team ever in the history of ever before the Rose Bowl.

I think that USC left their starters in against UVA because they have some key positions with little starting experience, including a relatively green QB, and they have no other game before hosting tOSU. Those guys needed reps.

I don't think that USC runs up the score on a regular basis.

I can't remember the year... maybe 02? THey had 2 losses and so did we. They were ranked way ahead of us in the polls. This irritated me. We had one common opponent. We beat KSU... they lost to them. Didn't seem right.

Then in 04 they didn't even make the BCS champ game because of their weakass schedule. Even an OU team that lost in their last game was ahead of them still. So given the KNOWN rules at the beginning of the year... That a champ had to be in the champ game. They complained and the AP announced them co-champs. Co-champs even though they beat the #10 teams and avoiding playing the #1 & # 2 teams at the end.

Then of course 05 pissed all of us off.

I just looked up Texas-Florida Atlantic stats.

Why was Colt McCoy in the game early in the 4th quarter? To those who say SC was piling it on vs Virginia.....well what about Texas? It was 42-10. Why was Colt still in the game? Mack just had to have Colt lead Texas to that field goal early in the 4th quarter eh?

WRONG. There's nothing at all classless about McCoy finishing off his day with that drive that started at the end of the third quarter. After that Mack pulled the starters the rest of the way. Same thing PC did vs Virginia, about the same time.

nice double standard there guys...

Texas, Tony Romo, Sherman Sucking in Gooberland, Houston Texans, Mario Williams Legit, T.O., Red Raiders Buzzing, Jerry Jones, etc...

USC, hollywood, can't touch this

someone got it up top when they said this.

USC does have a solid team, but the fact that they are in the PAC-10 makes them look bad. It's one of the weakest conferences, and I'm not so sure USC would do so well year in and year out if they were in a better conference.

No question that USC looked very good but they were playing Virginia who would probably struggle against Baylor.

But at least they were not playing Youngstown State or Georgia Southern or some other creampuff that the other 2 teams ranked up there played.

I am a big fan of witty repartee, so let em be #1. If we didn't have college football or the polls, this world would be BORING! It gives us ample fodder for message boards like this one.

There's a long, winding, fun season ahead for all. Let them get past next week and into game 12, then we'll talk. Until then, they are 1-0 just like a ton of others, including Troy (pun intended), Southern Miss, and the Longhorns!

Hook em!

UVa is not a great team, but they would not struggle against Baylor. USC's win on the road was impressive, and I would have them on top at this point (though it is probably at least 3 weeks early to have a poll, imo).

The nice thing about this season is that we'll know a whole lot more about USC after their Ohio State game. (Sounds familiar, doesn't it?)
