Hand was pretty average. He's not terrible. He took the worst excuse for an OL that ever donned the burnt orange, and made them into a fairly average line. For terrible OL coaches, see the couple or three before Hand. We need better. Also, his recruiting was sub-par and getting worse.
Texas football culture: as a state, we probably produce more of the leaner, quicker, good footwork, pass blocker types than the big nasty road graders. This is because so many of the high schools run some sort of spread offense. Spread offenses notwithstanding, there are still plenty of big nasty dudes out there in this State for the taking.
