Helmet Clash: Michigan vs. Texas!

I thought the winged helmets were made so the quarterback could easily identify his receivers. Or am I completely wrong?

Looks like the painting of the wings, not the original wings made of leather straps, helped QBs spot their receivers.

Think about it. Back in the stone age uniforms weren't as glamorous as today, and leather helmets were essentially all brown calf leather or the like.

By painting the forehead piece and wings a distinctive color, it likely made it easier to spot a good guy.

P.S., thinking about the construction of the old leather helmets, they were probably made with triangular strips that were sewn together to make a dome (forcing a flat piece of leather into a head shape is probably too difficult); adding the strips (wings) just reinforced the areas where the triangles came together.
