I'm aware this isn't football related, but this is my favorite board.

Happy San Jacinto Day!

On April 21, 1836, Texas won the Battle of San Jacinto ensuring its independence from Mexico!

I'm glad someone else remembered besides me. I can remember when we had a school day off for San Jacinto Day.

Growing up in San Antonio, I had a school holiday commemorating San Jacinto Day every year.

Battle of Flowers Day

This year it is celebrated city-wide on Friday, April 25th. Yes, this is a holiday for the Fiesta parade held each year in downtown San Antonio. However, this parade dates back to 1891 when the Daughters of the Republic of Texas created the parade to commemorate the victory of the Battle of San Jacinto and to honor those killed at the Alamo. They decorated horse drawn carriages with flowers and the celebration blossomed over the years into what is now the 10-day multi-event celebration known as Fiesta San Antonio.

I have always believed that there should be a statewide holiday commemorating San Jacinto Day and Texas Independence Day. I usually make it home to SA to partake in the Fiesta celebration for at least a day or two... it's my duty as a Texan!

I'm in Denton at the moment, pursuing my graduate degree in Journalism from UNT. I'm going to make the trip down I-35 on Wednesday for "A Night in Old San Antonio" or NIOSA on Wednesday and Thursday nights in La Villita near the Riverwalk.

If y'all have never been before, let me highly recommend it as a native of SA. It's been my family's favorite event over the years. For those of you who like the parades, check out the Fiesta Flambeau Parade on Saturday night in downtown SA (annually featuring the Showband of the Southwest, our Texas Longhorn Band). The Battle of Flowers day parade runs on Friday at noon in downtown SA and is led off by the Aggy Band (but still a good parade in spite of this).

Anyway... Happy San Jacinto Day! Viva Fiesta! & Hook 'em!

To clarify: 1990 - 2002 was in Humble ISD near Houston and 2002 - 2006 was at UT in Austin.

I totally agree March 2 and April 21 should be mandatory holidays in the State of Texas for schools and businesses.
