guitar hero question, I'm a noob

A few more things. The reason I suggest getting RB2 first and then possible a GH guitar as opposed to the bundle, is because I like the fact that with RB2, and the rental of RB1, and the 20 free DLs you get a TON more songs right off the bat for his first music game. If he likes it he can later get GH, but this way he'll start off with something like 150 songs, which he can use to decide whether he wants more games or not.

Second, I play Rb primarily solo. So take my reviews with that in mind. Don't assume I'm some sort of party-gamer. I do play online at times, but at home I'm playing solo 90% of the time. (my wife does play the drums sometimes). Also I don't ever play the drums. I do sing at times, when I'm bored, though.

Hooray! A good old fashioned throwdown of fanboys, and me vs. Halstead!

I actually agree with you on a lot of points- get the game/guitar one way, and move on up to another version if you like. Nothing says you can't play both! And I think getting rid of solo tour was a good move in RB2 as well- it ticked off my friends doing RB1 that they couldn't work World Tour mode without having to sing and play (which is quite tricky!). And I'm going to grab the Wii version of RB2 when it hits so I can hit the download library (I want some Disturbed, STP and Who songs to round out the game).

I generally like the charts better in Guitar Hero. If you want to make a quick comparison, you can look here:

Go Your Own Way

Everlong

It's kinda interesting to see what sections each chose to chart lead and which were rhythm, and where there are big differences in how the song is interpreted by the developers. I typically like the Guitar Hero charts better because I think their Expert charts tend to follow the song better (as in follow the parts more closely and are more interesting to play- you can see some differences in how the general rhythms were charted in Everlong). I've generally been unhappy with Rockband's charting (I wanted to throttle whoever did the chart for Pinball Wizard) because of some of their choices of charting how the song sounds vs. how its being played on guitar.

One thing we haven't asked Ballrific is what kind music and bands he listens to- if he's the world's biggest Who fan, or he loves the Cars, or he's really into Aerosmith, it may be a really simple choice.

oh yeah, and I'm kind of an 80's/90's rock guy. I listen to the Cult, Pixies, Soundgarden, Ministry, Modest Mouse, REM, Tool, stp, Oasis, Weezer, etc...kind of a wide range of rock/pop, I guess.

From what I've heard I think I'd go with the PS3 version of any game you choose. I think I've heard the Wii hardware can't handle the speed of some of the faster songs.

I don't know for certain, though, as I don't own a wii.

Then I think you wanna go Rock Band. The songs by the artists each band has is:

RB1
Wave of Mutilation by the Pixies
Blackhole Sun by Soundgarden
Orange Crush by REM
Say it Ain't So by Weezer
Vasoline by Stone Temple Pilots

RB2
Float On by Modest Mouse
Spoonman by Soundgarden

DLC
Buddy Holly by Weezer
Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots
Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis
Live Forever by Oasis
Wonderwall by Oasis
Sex Type Thing by Stone Temple Pilots
Rock 'n Roll Star by Oasis
All of the Doolittle Album by the Pixies
Dreamin' by Weezer
The Greatest Man That Ever Lived by Weezer
Troublemaker by Weezer
She Sells Sanctuary by the Cult

GHWT has some great songs (especially if you're into more metal type stuff) but I think this has more of what you'll like.

GET THE PS3 VERSION! BETTER GRAPHICS, BETTER ONLINE STUFF! Rock Band for the Wii has been mediocre- you'll be happier on PS3.

And Halstead's right about the song import- a Rock Band rental gets you all the songs from RB1 (except Enter Sandman, Green Grass and High Tides, and Run to the Hills) for $5 into Rock Band 2.

Also, if you're in Austin and wanted to have a look-see at one of the GH games, send me a PM. I can arrange a demonstration

It's not that the Wii hardware can't handle it, it's that the Wii gets shafted when it comes to features. There's no World Tour mode in RB1 on Wii, or downloadable content. We just got hosed out of the Hendrix content for WT (idiotic reasoning on top of it too).

But I get my Mario Kart fix, and can play Secret of Mana, so I'm still content. And it sounds like RB2 will get DLC, so there's some hope.

if you've never played, how long does it take to get "decent"? I'm thinking it might take some patience. I'm not too handy with my pinky when it comes to guitar playing, not that these games have anything to do with real guitar playing but still.

I thought someone else would chime in with how long it took to get decent at it, but I'll take a stab at it.

Anyway its tough to say. It comes down to how you pick up certain techniques. There's using your pinkie. Sliding your hand up and down between the 5 notes. Changing chords. Strumming up as well as down. Hammer-ons and pull-offs (fast notes you don't need to strum). Depending on what you end up good or bad at is going to end up limit you. For example I suck at HO/POs and thus suck at most of the metal songs. I'm good at three note chords and chord changes, though, so I'm really good at the pop-ish songs that give other people trouble. As I mentioned before I've had Rock Band for probably 4-5 months now, and still can't beat a handful of songs on expert. I would say it only took me a couple weeks to move up to hard, and then some easy expert songs. After that it's just practice. If you are good at things like strumming up and down and HOPOs, then you will probably progress a lot quicker than I did.

BTW What you should probably do, is go hang out with tallgrant some day and play GH, then hang out with me for a day and play RB, and make your decision off first hand experience.

do you have beer? jk. I thought it was basically just strumming and pressing whichever color button...guess there's more to it than I thought.

It mostly is, but there are tricks to it. You can't always strum fast enough just pressing up or down, so you have to learn to alternate. There are 5 buttons, and you have 4 fingers, so you have to learn to move. Lots of techniques.

I finished GH3's medium tour on the first day I had it. It took me about 2-3 months to get through the hard career (about 3 weeks in is when RB1 released- I started on expert when I played it, but didn't get to try anything really challenging until after I'd moved to expert on GH). Then I moved into expert- I finished my last song on the main setlist (Raining Blood) all told about 6 months after release. Really, it depends a lot of factors like your previous musicianship, how much you play, and whether you work at things you're weak at.

i played at best buy today; they said the guitars weren't compatible, which I thought they were. I think the GHIII guitar looks more like a toy, which someone mentioned. I suck to say the least, I think moving your index finger up and down and leaving your pinky on the bottom button is the easiest.

I did a little checking- the guitars are compatible. Apparently the wireless dongle on the PS3 Les Paul (which comes with GH3) has some lag on it, which isn't present in the PS3 Stratocaster (RB1).The World Tour guitar doesn't seem to have this issue either.

But these are other people's opinions- never actually played any of these on the PS3.
