guitar hero question, I'm a noob

was thinking about finally getting it for the PS3; which game is better, GHIII "World Tour" or Legends of Rock"? Basically which one should I buy..

exactly. Rock Band 2 is way better...plus they have new songs and content every week. And the Beatles pack coming out soon.

"World Tour" is newer and can be a full-band game (w/ drums and microphone). GHIII is guitar-only. If you want to play with other people, I'd go World Tour. If you're playing by yourself, I have no idea.

It really depends. I'd suggest the following:

1. If you're just getting into Guitar Hero, you only want to play guitar, or you want to keep this as cheap as possible, go with GH3. It'll be the cheapest, and I think the guitar will work in RB2 (definitely compatible to World Tour). You'll need a second guitar for a bass if you decide to go the full band route and you can get fairly good deals on a new bundle as its been out over a year.

2. If you're looking for the full band experience, I'd compare the instruments and the setlists to see which suits what you'd like better.

Rock Band 2 setlist

World Tour setlist

As noted above, there is an awful lot more downloadable content for Rock Band.

It's worth keeping in mind a couple of notes regarding the hardware:

a) The instruments are supposed to be cross-compatible, but currently there are issues reported that the PS3 World Tour drumset is not working with RB2. It's supposed to be patched at some point in the future.

b) The World Tour drumset has been reported with some sensitivity issues. Red Octane is shipping out a kit where you can adjust it on your PC, but that's still a hassle. I haven't seen much on the RB2 drumset. The RB1 had some issues when it first released that have now been resolved.

c) The drumsets are a little different in appearance and style- World Tour has 3 toms and two raised cymbals. Rock Band 2 has 4 toms, with expansion ports to turn three of the toms into cymbals (my understanding is that when the cymbal expansions are in, you can hit either one).

I've bought GHWT for the full instruments and will be buying the disc only for RB2. But a lot of that is based on the fact I'm playing on Wii and that RB1 was pretty gimped. That said, most of my friends who play on 360 got World Tour for the instruments and went disc only for RB2.

And for what its worth, while I want to adjust the sensitivity and sent away for a kit, I've not really had trouble playing on my GHWT drums beyond the fact I suck at it. The equipment seems to work pretty well.

I don't play them but have bought them and all. From what my kids say Rock Band is only good for the drums and new songs available every week. The guitar is better and something o tdo with the way it is played is better on GH. The guitars are not compatible though with rock band on the PS3.

The guitar is generally charted better on Guitar Hero. I haven't played enough drums to make a judgement call on which is better.

One other thing- be really careful looking around the internet at people's comments as there's some severe fanboyism for both games. If someone bashes the developer as being awful or praises them as being godly, chances are they're not being honest.

GH has Muse songs, which is a big win. But I hear that they're going to eventually release SRV's Texas Flood on Rock Band...

so if I go with GH, which game then, isn't there like 3-4 different ones? I'd like to go with the best set list and i thought legends of rock had that but I could be confusing it with another one..

Well, it can depend:

1. Guitar Hero 1 is really high on covers, and some of the mechanics don't work properly.

2. Guitar Hero 2 has fewer covers and better mechanics. The guitar you'll get for it is wired. A lot of purists prefer this game (which was the last one Harmonix worked on before they separated out to make Rock Band).

3. Guitar Hero Rocks the 80s is a cheapo spinoff with fewer songs than GH2. I'd get 2 or 3 before this because of the low number of songs and the fact that so many are covers.

4. Guitar Hero 3 (Legends of Rock) has a bigger setlist that's arguably better than Guitar Hero 2. The guitar for this game is wireless. There is a bug in the mechanics that makes hammer-ons and pull offs easier than they should be, and it happenned because the entire gameplay engine was rebuilt from scratch after Harmonix went away.

5. Guitar Hero Aerosmith is fun, but it has fewer songs and less variety than GH2/3. IT's worth getting if you really like Aerosmith, but I'd start with GH2 or 3.

I'd personally get GH2 or GH3- I've got a nostalgic attachment to GH3 because that was the first I owned, but they're both really good.

Is it a waste to get Rock Band if you don't have other people playing? i won't be having other people over to play in a "band"; probably be just me and the guitar.

I don't think it's a big problem playing Rock Band solo, but it tends to be more fun playing in a group. The Guitar Hero games seem to have the more solid single player experience, and Rock Band the better multiplayer.

RB1 is quite a bit easier than Guitar Hero for guitar. I wasn't quite able to pass everything in GH3 on hard when it released, but had no problems jumping in on expert for Rock Band 1. I think the skill required to pass everything but Green Grass and High Tides on RB1 expert is about 4th tier on expert in GH3 (game has 8 tiers of songs).

I've heard that RB2's guitar is more difficult, but haven't played enough to know for sure.

Sounds like you had your mind made up already, but I would again suggest checking out RB2. If you get it, you can rent or borrow RB1 and for a $5 fee import all its songs (except for three songs) into RB2. This way you have 130+ songs. RB2 also gives you 20 free downloadable songs (of their choosing) which are so-so, but that brings you up to 150+ songs in one game.

They are also adding tons of downloadable songs for purchase every week, as well as the few hundred they already offer. SO, while you are missing out on some songs like Hot for Teacher and Rebel Yell, you can still download songs like Dammit as well as other songs not available in GH:WT (such as Weezer songs).

i haven't bought anything because I recently read that GH World Tour doesn't have that many downloads because of the multiple instruments. So maybe Legends of Rock would be better. Anyone have that one?

Ummmm, I'm still confused as to why Rock Band 2 isn't in the conversation?

I guess it doesn't really matter to me in anyway, but I'm curious as to your reasoning. Every post you have says "GH is it, but ..." and then Rock Band has what your "but..." is. Weezer, Downloadable Songs. Is it that you don't want all the instruments? Because you could buy just the RB2 game and an after-market guitar that works with the game. Then, again, you could rent or borrow RB1 and import all those songs for $5.

Anyway, again it's up to you, your reasoning is just odd to me.

I don't know anyone with rock band, that's probably the main reason. You guys tell me, should I be looking at Rock Band instead, is it the better game? I've heard the guitar playing is really easy/basic but then again, that might be good since I've never played either.

I'll basically be just playing the guitar by myself, so I thought Rock Band was more of a "party" game and better if you had people to play other instruments.

I'm basically just looking for a shove in one direction or the other, and then which game to buy within rock band or GH.

RB2 is plenty hard. I highly doubt you'll master it quickly. If at all. I'm no slouch, and I can't beat 3 songs on hard, a handful on expert, and I doubt I ever will. I guess you could turn out to be some sort of plastic-guitar jedi, and if that turns out to be, then there are songs you can download that are even harder than the on-disk songs.

Anyway here's some links:
Hardest song on disk:The Link
Hardest song on RB1:The Link
Hard Downloadable song:The Link

Again, I've given you the reason I would prefer RB over GH. The amount of music you can end up with for very little more money is astounding. You can easily have over 150 songs for around $70 (the game plus renting/importing RB1).

As for the party aspect, again you can buy just the game and then a guitar that will work with it. Then you aren't out any more than you would be with GH. Then, later, If you like it I'm sure you could pick up some RB1 drums off craigslist or something.

So I hear there is

between GH and RB "purists". Is this true? Kind of like Xbox and PS3 users?

If so, I need the "purists" to convince me one or the other. The poster above has helped alot and shown that you can get alot more songs on the cheap with Rock Band by downloading RB1 songs. So I guess I'm leaning that way now..I love overanalyzing things

If you're mostly playing by yourself, I'd go with GH3 or GHWT. Pick whichever set list you like better.

I'd avoid Rock Band for the single player; the guitar controllers are inferior. I know quite a few people who have played both, and that opinion is pretty consistent. Also, the songs are better suited for band play. Guitar Hero songs are better suited for single player.

that's the kind of input I've been waiting for. Thanks in advance for anyone else commenting and thanks for past suggestions as well.

Let me also throw in- there are some good drum songs for Guitar Hero World Tour, but not as many as Rock Band. There's a Willie Nelson song with about the most boring drum part I've ever suffered through

Rock Band's vocals and drum stuff on-disk is typically stronger. And their DLC only improves it. But the best epic guitar stuff really shows up in Guitar Hero.

I have heard the Guitar Hero guitar is better. I used the RB guitar first, and thus got used to it, so I don't mind not having a clicking sound which seems to be the biggest gripe of the RB guitar. Having said that, again I pointed out that he should buy RB2, just the game, and then pick up a different guitar. He could pick up a GH guitar, or he could pick up an aftermarket one. Are all the aftermarket ones suck? I assumed some of them would be as good or better than the ones that come with the games.

As for RB2 not lending itself to playing solo, I disagree. Yes it doesn't have a solo-tour, but I actually like having the ability to do a world tour by myself (as opposed to how it was in RB1). And the solo-tour can only go so far (which is what most people ***** about being "missing" from RB2).

Anyway, I still think those shortcomings don't kill the game, and I think the tons of music available makes up for them. These are music games, and in my opinion the music is the most important thing. Now having said that if you look at the set-lists and just love GH3 more than than anything, go ahead and get it.

Finally I'd like to point out, that the typical fan-boy come back to "GH is harder" is that "GH over charts their songs, and adds notes that aren't there to make it harder than it actually should be. RB is more true to the music."
