Griner Speaks The Truth

Theres throwing someone under the bus, and then theres being the driver and hitting someone with a Mack truck. I would say its crystal clear which instance BG's new book will fall under.
The Link

Some people deserve to be hit by a Mack truck. I'd say someone that tarts it up on the sidelines the way she does so she can put her arm around the male ref's waist and explain what calls she wants/expects to get; all the while telling her lesbian player to act straight is a special kind of hypocrite. If the Mack truck doesn't get her, karma will.

TempestHorn got it exactly right. The issue isn't Baylor's policy, or whether a student athlete is gay or not. Not that the policy isn't wrong also, which is why it's increasingly rare to find that kind of language being used by most major universities (including many with religious affiliations).

There are two disturbing aspects to this story, the fist of which is that Griner told Mulkey (as per last year's ESPN report) that she way gay during the recruiting process. She asked if it was a problem and was told it was not. But once on campus Griner, and other gay athletes, were told to keep quiet about their orientation because it would hurt recruiting. This is why this is even a story in the first place. Obviously there are gay athletes, both men and women, present on teams at all universities, and across all sports. And while others may or may not know, it's seldom an issue. It isn't something that's even going to come up in a public forum, and has nothing to do with their performance as athlete or student. The reason it's an issue for Griner is because she was lied to.

In effect you have Mulkey telling recruits one thing during recruiting, and another after they've signed on the dotted line. Moreover she knows full well what University policy is during the recruiting process. Such blatant hypocrisy is going to be a problem for most athletes, and in particular parents, no matter their feelings about the underlying policy.

The other unsettling aspect of this story is the assertion that Kim pulled away from Brittney after the loss to Louisville. That isn't a trait you expect from, or ever want to see in a coach. A sad story all the way around, but kudos to Brittney for speaking up, and for being honest about the situation.

I'm pulling for the mack truck! Karma is a given.

Sadly it's not just Baylor that wants to keep it's gay players in the closet. Happens even here at Texas and on this basketball team. And not just athletes - gay male cheerleaders are "coached" how to avoid appearing and cheering too feminine. As for Mulkey - if what Griner says is true it's disappointing. I would hope a great coach would also be a great person.
I do admire Griner. She endured unimaginable homophobic heckling throughout her career. Perhaps nowhere was it more disgusting than during an away game at Texas Tech (look up the tape).

Cmtsip -- yes she pretty much sucks as a coach. Well, except for those National Championships and conference championships. But other than that...

Well before we all jump KM, we have to realize a few things.

1. Her, nor any top tier coach are without their faults. Every coach who consistently attracts top prospects face accusations of things not always being done "above board". Geno being a prime example. And I remember Marsha Sharp making a few comments nationally about what she thought of Jody's tactics from time to time.

2. All of the wonderful things that our Alumni say about Texas are the same things that a majority of the Alumni would say about Baylor. BG is one of the very few that go against the grain once they've graduated. Even Texas is not without its own promenient alumni problems. Let us not forget that we are still having a hard time bringing Clarissa back into the fold, and she has been less that cordial in things she's said to recruits in the past.

The point im trying to make, is before we tell someone else how dirty their house is we should make sure we tidy some things up ourself.

I think Mulkey cared more about signing Griner than she did about the supposed "rules" and "ethics" stipulated by Baylor University.

Griner told Mulkey that she was gay, and asked if it was a problem; Mulkey told her it wasn't. How could Mulkey have not told her Baylor's view on homosexuality? How could Mulkey not have told her what former Baylor playler, Emily Niemann, endured during her time at Baylor?

I'm actually waiting for when former Baylor assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Damion McKinney, decides it's time to share what he knows about the Baylor program; I was shocked when he left after last season, and it's all been very hush-hush. I don't think he left for a better / higher-paying job; and, not sure who made the decision to part ways.

Tempesthorn: Fans of programs that aren't winning championships often attack/criticize coaches of teams that are - and it gets personal (e.g. “If you think Mulkey with her tarting it up style of dress and histronics everytime a call does not go her way, is instilling the same kind of values in her players then I respectfully disagree.”).

I’m a diehard Texas fan but I’m relatively certain Kim is instilling the same kind of values in her players that most other coaches are. She demands excellence. However, unlike few other coaches in the country, she often achieves it. I wish we had the kind of success she has enjoyed. Maybe some day soon we will.

I can't throw stones because I've done criticized Kim too. I enjoy making fun of her leather pants and stiletto heels -- but I respect the product she puts on the floor. Usually these types criticisms are based on jealousy -- we want what they don't have. Championships. It's why the Aggies are obsessed with Texas. As for how alumni feel about the program – I agree with utfannforlife. Alumni for almost every school feel equally as loyal to their alma mater as ours. Not sure Texas is different than Baylor, OU or A&M.

If it’s proven Mulkey is a homophobe, then I’ll be first in line to heckle and harass her and my respect will evaporate. Who knows where the truth lies? Griner has her story. What about all the other lesbians that have played for Mulkey? I wonder how they feel? We’ll see.

texexted-

Let me be perfectly clear...I DON'T WANT WHAT BAYLOR HAS AND IF IT MEANS WE NEVER WIN ANYTHING AGAIN SO BE IT. The people that wanted to hire her for the job here at Texas are sad individuals that would sell their soul to the devil all for the sake of winning.

We 100% disagree on the values Kim instills in her players. Her story of being at La Tech and hitting her knees to beg for the head coaching job is another prime example of a woman that has no sense of pride or self-worth to demean herself in such a way for a JOB. Her sideline behavior is abhorrent. That is not jealousy that is disgust. I will thank you not to label me as a jealous fan. Do you really think when the fan heckled her at the end of our game with them here in Austin it was appropriate for a coach to call the fan down? She is trailer trash to call a fan down. Ignore it and move on.

I have been to women's volleyball games at Baylor where the Baylor women's basketball team has been in attendance. Their behavior on the sideline is a direct contradiction to your assertion that Kim is instilling values in her players. It was a pathetic display and I can't ever imagine a Texas coach in any sport allowing that type of behavior to go on.

Your belittling my opinion down to simple jealousy pisses me off to no end.

heck·le
verb
past tense: heckled; past participle: heckled
interrupt (a public speaker) with derisive or aggressive comments or abuse.

The dictionary definition. But according to the condescending poster, texexted, an action that warrants a coach to deck someone. Anything I've said about Mulkey on this web board, I'd say to her face. I'm not making anything up. I have read her story about begging for a job on her knees, I've seen her disgusting sideline behavior and dress with my own eyes, and I saw her players conduct at a volleyball game as fans with my own eyes. You have revealed far more about your piss poor character to suggest a coach can deck a fan as long as they win championships. You're embarrassed a fan called her a bad name, I'm embarrassed you're a Texas fan.

Wanting a coach like Kim is = to selling your soul?? Thats an incredible leap to connect the two. You have to know that Kim is very much like the coached that mentored her. If you go back and look at some old film of Pat Summit and Sonja Hogg you will see the exact same flare and "hystrionics: that we see from Kim today. The only difference is that she does it in leather pants and high heels.

Ariel Atkins was quoted as saying that "Coaches technical was the thing I noticed most in the Baylor game. I mean what kid doesnt want a coach who will fight for them tooth and nail" I've echoed similar sentiments. When I coached I was quite firey, and that doesnt translate into disrespect for the officials or the game but merely demanding that your kids get an equal shot to compete and win the game.

If you suggest that we dont want the success that Baylor has enjoyed, what would you like to compete for? Pats on the back dont do much for me, and I would imagine that it wouldnt do much for elite level recruits either.

Stat: "To each their own I suppose"

And Tara, Pat, and Gary dont get much criticism on this board because they are in their "Golden Years" when they were fighting to establish their programs dominance, they (especially Pat) were more like Kim than any of us would care to acknowledge. Dominance comes with a certain amount of consistent passion. Tara and Pat, were in auto pilot for the most part, Gary is the exception to the rule. Knowing what a fantastic person he is makes it hard to ever have a negative word about him.

Style and conduct are separate issues. I may not like a certain coach's demeanor (antics is probably a better word), but that doesn't necessarily mean he or she has done anything inappropriate, or unethical. But I do believe certain lines were crossed in the case of Mulkey and Griner.

What I don't believe is that Kim is homophobic, nor do I think Baylor's policy is the real problem here. Yes it's outdated, and wrong, but at some point it's going to change (irrespective of their affiliation). Most young people today, religious or otherwise, could care less whether or not someone is gay. And there are certainly many Baylor students, staff and alumni who are gay, and who still love and support their university. And rightly so.

The word that always comes to mind first with respect to Kim is drama. Many will remember the handshake refusal, and "she hasn't earned the right to say something like that to me..." incident between Mulkey and Chapman. Pokey attempted to handle something with Kim privately. Kim's actions, and later comments in particular, made it into a very public episode. Regardless of the background, or underlying cause, very few coaches are going to escalate the situation in that way. Disagreements and difficult conversations between coaches are probably a common occurrence, but we just aren't aware of them. And there's a reason for that. First and foremost collegiate coaches are supposed to set an example for their players. Another recent example is the incident someone mentioned about Kim challenging a rude fan in the stands to come down and deal with her on the court. I don't know the details because no one elaborated on it, but it's pretty shocking if true. Players get heckled and called out all the time and the cardinal rule is you don't take the bait. Ever. And for a coach to turn around and do the one thing you tell your players to never do? That's difficult to understand.

The issue with Griner isn't that she is gay, or that Baylor's policy says that's wrong. It's that Brittney specifically asked Kim if it was a problem, and was told one thing during recruiting, and another once she was on campus. That's the kind of thing, along with the other incidents mentioned above (and those highlighted by other posters) that calls Kim's character into doubt. And that will cause a parent to seriously question if this is the kind of individual you want setting an example, or influencing your child for the duration of their college career. It isn't about winning or losing. It's about instinct, and doing things the right way or not. By in large I agree with the examples highlighted by others. Tara, Pat, Muffet, Jody and many more set the right kind of example. And while all have won championships, in some instances probably lost others because there were certain things they wouldn't stoop to, or engage in. On the other hand you have coaches like Kim and Geno; no need to say anything more about my feelings for those two. To utfann's points about Pat, and in general many coaches not being all that different in terms of demeanor, I agree and disagree. With respect to Pat, she was a much different coach during the first decade of her career than she was for the final 20 + years. And I don't think the issue is demeanor, or how much emotion (passion) a coach displays; there are many who are right up there with Kim in that regard. It isn't style but conduct, and crossing lines that's the problem.

Temp, Now you're saying that players like Sophia Young, and Melissa Jones didnt have character instilled in them during their time at Baylor?? Thats not seeing the full picture!! If you say that Kim is not like Pat then you clearly havent gone far enough back in history. Even in the 30 for 30 that ESPN did on her, I saw some things on the sideline that could onlyl be defined as "hystrionics". She wasnt immune to "drama" either. Example, dissolving the Uconn rivalry. That caused drama unilke anything this game has ever seen, it headlined ESPN for days!! Not saying that she was in the wrong by any stretch of the imagination, but there was certainly a less public way to go about it. We give Pat the benefit of the doubt because we are able to see her full body of work from a few states away. There are some fans and conference foes that probably felt about her the way you feel about Kim 10+years ago.

Temp - this is clearly one of the problems with message boards, I never accused you of being jealous. That was another post not made by me. And I just because I point to some similarities between BU and our program, and between Kim and Pat I worship her? No, I respect what she has done. Again, quite a leap. But that doesn't seem to be unusual for you. There are millions of different ways to coach, and I happen to be a fan of the majority of the things she does. I don't agree with all of her methods, but I know that I would want UT to be more like BU than I would want them to be different. Any coach will tell you that the true measure of a coach is not what opposing fans think of you, but rather if you have the respect of your coaching peers. And from talking to coaches around the country, she undoubtly has that.

Btw, since I have your permission to go and be BU fans would it be possible for you to refund my tuition? Season tickets for the last 11 years? Traveling expenses for all of the UT road games I've attended? Continuous donations to the Texas exe foundation and scholarship endowment funds? Didn't think so. Good day

utfa- When the other coaches rave about Kim and talk about their respect for her do they go on in glowing terms about the cheating she did in recruiting? I'd love to hear their take on a woman who colluded with her buddy, Scott Drew, and the Baylor crew on developing a system whereby they knowingly could skirt the NCAA rules. I'm sure they must talk about how smart she was to only get a slap on the wrist by the NCAA. She certainly deserves all your respect...what a stand up gal! Keep setting the bar high and you have a good day too!

I would gladly refund whatever you need me to if I get to stop reading your *** kissing of this blatant cheater and drama queen. Send me a bill.

Have you seen the Swoopes 30 for 30? You realize Jody was accused of cheating and "improprieties" to get her here? Pat was accused of the same with Holdsclaw and Parker, and Sue Gunter w/ Augustus just like Geno with maya Moore and most recently McGraw with jewel Lloyd. Not saying any are in the right. Just trying to get you to see that more people bend the rules than we'd like to acknowledge. You clearly mistake my admiration and respect for Kims coaching ability and accomplishments as an endorsement of the wrongs she's done which couldn't be further from the truth.

Were any of those people disciplined by the NCAA for these alleged improprieties? I'm not so naive as to believe recruiting improprieties don't go on throughout college sports. But seriously from the fan who spouts all the events and money he's spent supporting our program, throwing shade on Jody's recruiting is pretty ******. Of course look who I am speaking to....the very man that posted Griner's accusations on this site. Then when people chime in, you want to defend Mulkey. I apologize to the fellow posters for taking the bait and engaging with this professional **** stirrer.

utfa- I'd suggest if you don't want anyone crapping on Mulkey's "stellar" character THEN DON'T ******* POST A LINK TO THE STORY THAT QUESTIONS IT!
