Good home style cooking?

Threadgills officially sucks. It used to be one of our favorite places, even up until a couple of years ago. Then, a precipitous decline in quality. As an example, they stop serving biscuits altogether, then when they bring them back, they are pre-fab crap.

My wife and I gave them ONE LAST CHANCE this past Sunday, after not eating there for a year or so. It was mediocre. Service was awful and slow (as it has been consistently the last 4-5 times). Food quality wasn't what it used to be. Forget it. Won't be going back.

Hoover's is damn good, but not perfect. I like Cafe 290, too -- it's out in Manor on . . . 290.

Sadly, homecooking is not an Austin strength anymore.

I agree, Threadgills blows. I think it's a biggo expensive tourist trap now, because I don't know a single a Austinite that likes to eat there now. There use to be Good Eats, but then they went uppity, lost their local customer base, and then shut down.

My vote is Hoovers. I've only eaten there once, but it was bad ***, and I've never heard a negative comment about them. And yes, Hoovers does take out.

Can't comment on 290....

If you're ever down south, stop by the Broken Spoke and get whatever the daily lunch special is. Always damn good, and definitely home style cooking.

Dot's is good stuff, 290 Cafe in Manor is even better. I used to eat there for lunch on a regular basis and it was always great.

Dot's Place can't be beat for home cooking. Friday nights she used to have an all-you-can eat catfish buffet - don't know if they still do, but if so you've gotta try it.

I too found it rather amusing, but chose to not comment on it. That's one of those, "heh heh", and quickly move on comments.

haven't been to dot's although i have passed by it on the way to the fed ex main office. always thought about going...

anyway, i would say that hoovers has some of the best home-style cooking around. hoover used to be a cook at good eats, i believe. i have had their chicken fried steak, jerk chicken, and meatloaf and it is all good. the sides are great too.

It's very disappointing to hear Threadgill's has lost it's appeal. That was one of my favorite places in the late '80's, early '90's. It's been a long time since I've been there.

threadgill's is still alright but not as good as it was the 1st time i went about 5 years ago. that said, if you go to threadgill's go to the original off of lamar. i think that the food there is better than the newer location south of the river.

Hover did a little more than cook at Good Eats he was the GM from day one and designed the menu and you are right his place rocks. Dots is damn good also I hope the Negro post wasn’t aimed at either of them.

Cracker Barrell RULES! I think the one in Round Rock is the closest to Austin. I could eat Cracker Barrell food for every meal and never get tired of it.

It was a tasteless, innappropriate joke that I am glad was edited.
Some people need to think before they post or respond.

I didn't take it as a racist comment. It was clearly satirical of racist attitudes among others.

Of course, to understand that idea, one would have to acknowledge that Huckleberry Finn is not only not a racist book, but in fact is a commentary AGAINST racism. And that's way too sophisticated for many.

None of this changes the fact that I think HJ is a moron.

I agree with HJ about Dots, its allsome.

Now about his other comment, I'll just say I had a lot more respect for him until he told me to, "You come in here, boy, and bust up this ol' chiffarobe and I'll give you nickel."

I don't mind good, honest work but hanging on to me when his papa got home was too much. I almost...almost feel sorry for him.

Pathetic. Wait til Daniel Carver catches wind of your apology. You'll be out of his will in a heartbeat - and say bye bye to those cement statues you wanted for your front lawn.

I am not sure what you meant by.
"I've been told that a tiny percentage of white people are uncomfortable around other races. Of course, all those that post on this board (except me) are clearly not."
I have read this and again and again and to me it is saying that you ARE NOT comfortable around non-whites.
If that is the case then that is your right and I hope to never cross paths with you.
My comment was to the fact that I felt it is inappropriate to use racial terms like you did on this thread. Obviously so did the owners of this board.
This has nothing to do with Huckleberry Finn or anything like that. I have no idea what nationality you are and could care less. Your comments where offensive and I hope that a recruit, football player, or God forbid a recruits parents who are trying to learn something about Austin and it's people read this. If you where African American, Asian, or Hispanic I would still say the same thing, the comment was inappropriate.
I am sure someone of your intelligence could have come up with a better way to say what you said. Maybe "it's not in the nicest of areas but the eating is good" or something to that effect.

rksg, the words "sarcasm" and "satire" are in the dictionary. Go ahead, be daring and look them up.

Accuse HJ of many things -- racism ain't one of them that'll stick.

Now "pederast" -- THAT'S a lable HJ can live with.

Orngbld,
are you not the one who made the comment about Huckleberry Finn? If so then I am assuming that all you did was skim the book considering that is all you did to my post.
I never called him a racist. Maybe you should re-read his post (this time without the friend-tinted glasses) and tell me what you thought he said.
I am glad you feel the need to defend your friend but your smart *** remarks about my reading and comprehension are rediculous. Here let me try it this way:

Maybe this will help you to see that I DID NOT CALL HIM A RACIST, ONLY THAT HIS RACIAL TERMS (REMARKS) WERE INAPPROPRIATE FOR THIS BOARD AND GUESS WHAT, SO DID THE OWNERS OF THIS BOARD.
Just in case you didn't notice, I did not edit his post nor did he.
So you can get off of your defense mode for you friend and try something new, let him accept that he made a mistake everyone does now and then. Besides I wasn't talking to you or about you.

HJ ain't no friend of mine, nor does he need me to defend him.

But I DO hope this thread stays up -- it is becoming a classic, even if it won't ever see the Classics board.

S-A-R-C-A-S-M. One of the most powerful tools in the English language. Re: uncomfortable -- looks like HJ used it.

I thought the original post was funny. It was a joke, and it wasn't even so sophisticated that it takes a detective's eye to see through it.

Of course, I'm a messican, and say similar things when I drag friends to eat weird stuff at La Michoacana. Go with the plato de lengua -- the gringos LOVE it.

Ahh, my latino brother, I see you can SPELL, now let's try C-O-M-P-R-E-H-E-N-S-I-O-N. Try to UNDERSTAND I said the REMARK (WHICH WAS ABOUT RACE) WAS INAPPROPRIATE, I DID NOT CALL HIM A RACIST!
Here let me say it to you in laymans terms.
The **** was not funny. I am glad you can joke with your friends he is not my friend and obviously not yours.
I am sure if a parent of a recruit, a recruit, or most any other minority (yes I know, except you) were to read this they probably would find it offensive.
ONE MORE TIME, OBVIOUSLY THE OWNERS (WHO ALSO EDITED THE POST) FELT IT WAS INAPPROPRIATE AS WELL!
I think you and I should be done now, unless you want to continue this personally which we can either a) pm each other or b) meet at La Michoacana some time for lunch and discuss until they kick us out. Either way is fine.
By the way, I love Lengua, do they serve crispy tripas ?
One of my favorites.
Now you will have to excuse me, I have a baseball game at Downs field at 7:00 (you know East 12th Street, Huston Tillotson's field) and I am late. Afterwards we probably will eat at the Hooters on Riverside, you are more than welcome to come and you can join us and discuss this further.
I am sure since our team is made up of mostly minorities that would make for an interesting conversation. We will be the team called the Devil Rays.
Interesting how you say you are "messican" and use the term "weird stuff" when describing Mexican food.
Sad really.
I guess we were brought up different ways.
