good hole in the wall restaurants

So, I really appreciate little hole in the wall restaurants with great food, but I don't know of any (Other than Casino El Camino) in Austin. Can someone list a few?

Los Jaliscienses on the 290 access road is a pretty good hole in the wall mexican joint. Not the best mexican food in Austin, but it's up there.

For barbecue, I think House Park qualifies as hole in the wall, and it's the tits.

Tamale House is for sure a hole in the wall, the migas are a great breakfast (and their tacos are awesome too).

Gene's over on East 11th is great soul foud/cajun food/seafood

I am not sure it qualifies as a hole in the wall since it is a trailer, but I love Torchy's Tacos. There is a new one next to Little Woodrow's on 6th now.

Not exactly a hole in the wall, since it's clean, but it is in a modest strip mall north of 183 - Tam Vietnamese Deli. Sometimes I think it's the best restaurant in Austin as far as pleasing customers. The sandwiches, shrimp and yam cakes, and cream puffs are all awesome. A good bowl of bun, too. Two sisters (UT grads, btw) and their two husbands run it.

La Fuente's, a tex-mex place on Circle S in South Austin. It doesn't get anymore hole in the wall than this place.

Is Arkie's on East 1st still around?

Despite a few Razorback items on the wall, that place is (was?) excellent.

Angie's on E. 7th just east of I-35 (not really a hole in the wall, just the standard small east-side Mexican restaurant like some of those listed above)

Evita's Botanitas on S. 1st, past Stassney I think (not really a hole in the wall, just a little place in a small strip mall; it's clean and the food is good)

Taqueria Jalisco on Koenig near ?Woodrow or Grover? (not really a hole in the wall since it's a clean sit-down place, but it's a place that only neighborhood people seem to go; food is good, not great, and very inexpensive)

Sam's bbq on E. 12th of course

Taco Xpress on S. Lamar (not really a hole in the wall, just a funky place)

p.s. I'm saying most of my selections are not hole in the wall restaurants but I wouldn't consider most of what was listed above as hole in the wall restaurants -- just small, less patronized, non-chain eateries.

Omelettry was on the regular rotation with Magnolia and Kerbey Lane. La Reyna and Dario's were also on the regular rotation and both are quite popular. Ruby's and House Park are standard bbq joints.

For me, a hole in the wall has to be somewhat dirty, have flies, have sweaty staff, and not have a website. Just my .02

I haven't been down there for a while, but on sixth street there is a sushi bar, on the north side, about 5 blocks west of I-35. There is a fancy place on the South side, this place, not so fancy, on the North side, but open lots more hours. The family is friendly, the sushi is super fresh. It is great food, at a great price.

Also, on I-35, open 24 hours with beer, and a nice eclectic crowd, the Star Seed, right by the campus, on the service road on the east side.

Jason's Deli, great sub sandwiches.

You got me there. Still great sandwiches, though.

Did you know that in Buffalo, New York, and the surrounding area, there is a place called TIm Horton's? It is a doughnut shop/ coffee shop. It is owned by a hockey player from Canada, Tim Horton. The places are packed, day and night. It takes the place of say, Krispy Kreme, or Mr. Donut, but, for some reason, this place is on STEROIDS, and I mean very very busy, lines for 1/2 block to get coffee, and if you drive another mile, there's another one, doing the same.

My point being, you've never heard of them. If you are new in town, maybe you come from an area with no Jason's Deli?? It is possible.

If anyone was looking to buy into a franchise concept, I'd look at Timmy Horton's. A BIG money maker up north, but, Not a Hole in the wall.

If you go out on 71 east, from I-35 on the south side, there is a Catfish Parlor there. They have great chow, including you can eat sides, and awesome hushpuppies, which I normally don't eat, but these are great.

On the backside of the Catfish Parlor, along the other road adjacent, there is a little Chinese Place that has killer food, for only, like $4.99 for a great lunch.

Also, 1st Wok, on First street @ Stassney, AWESOME chinese lunch, great hot and sour soup/eggrolls/triple delight.

what is the mexican place in the old house, which has boxing memorabilia all over the place?

it is off of william cannon, east of S. Congress.

although not in austin but in cameron you will find a wonderful little steakhouse with Longhorn attire all over the bar area, Bob's Steakhouse!

Evita's Botanitas. 6400 S. 1 St. (Austin)

I liked it. There's are reviews you can find if you Google it. Some like it, some don't; but that's standard opinions on restaurant reviews. There are always haters out there.

Try it out.
