Golf courses in Austin

Falconhead's nice.

Clay went through a redesign last year. I think it's next on my list so I can check it out.

Played Avery Friday. Fairways and tees were in very good shape. The greens were pretty good but had some spots on them where they must havehad some issues as it looked like a hundred pitch marks that no one bothered to fix.

terravista - you can hear I-35 from certain holes (more than one) and you can see the damn IKEA sign from at least one hole. That's not my ideal surroundings for an $80 round of golf.

wow, that's pretty picky

Teravista does not cost $80. Sat/Sunday tee times on Golf512 were $50. They have tee times for $29 tomorrow. $29 is a great value by any of the public courses standards. Hell, even Hancock is only $9 cheaper for 18 holes.

Even if you book on teravista's website (which doing so on golf512 is obviously a smarter and cheaper option) weekend tee times are only $65

I don't think you ever hear I-35... You hear Chandler Rd (or University Blvd, whatever its called now) but I don't think you really get close enough to 35 to hear it.

You would hate golfing in Florida.... $100+ for a round of golf surrounded by Publix and strip malls.

Yeah tropheus, I think you're being too picky about Teravista. I-35 is a non-issue, and who gives a **** if you can see IKEA from the tee box of one or two holes? If you're playing Star Ranch then you're gonna hear traffic from the 130 toll in a couple places, if you're playing Avery you're gonna hear traffic from Parmer. I really don't see Teravista being any different, maybe you should stick to Wolfdancer if you need something extremely remote. Of course that's a hell of a drive and the tee times are double the cost, but whatever.

played Shadow Glen yesterday. I'm growing a hatred of that course and may not play it anymore. Always muddy and the greens have never been in good shape the dozen rounds I've played there. Good value though and the fairways were in great shape. Other than that....

I really like Falconhead.

Shadow Glen is the devil. But at least its cheap.

Is Falconhead back in good shape? I have always loved the layout of that course but the last time I played it, the greens were in pitiful condition. Paid $80 to putt on sand/dead bermuda and have not had the desire to go back because of it. Is it time to give that course another chance?

yes, I'm picky and the constant hum of traffic wasn't Chandler Rd. I also don't like near zero lot lined homes jammed up real close the course. I like courses with more natural appeal.

it's a good course other than the greens being unbelievably slow when I played (could be better now) but I found it a bit boring with less than appealing surroundings.

I really don't know what to say. I've played Teravista probably 30 times and never once heard the traffic or paid attention to the homes that line the course. I've played every course in Austin and the majorityof them have homes that butt up to the course, including the private ones.

This really is an odd complaint that you have.

Falconhead was probably in 7.5/8 shape overall (2 weeks ago). Greens weren't optimum, but were in better shape than, say, 6 months ago. I just like the layout, the price, the not-so-far drive out there, rarely have some bastard hitting up your arse, etc.

Yeah all the nice courses in the Austin area have houses butted up to them, that's the nature of nice courses. I could be wrong, but I think golf courses are used as a real estate tool in a lot of cases.

The only remote golf courses I can think of are Star Ranch, Shadow Glen, and Wolfdancer, but even Star Ranch is having a sub-division put in on their back nine now. Actually, Shadow Glen has houses all along their back 9 too.

I guess with more mature courses the houses are more hidden with mature trees and more wooded rough areas before the houses/out of bounds.

I like the bastrop courses, the lakeway courses, clay and lions (for munis), and probably a few others I haven't thought of. I am pretty particular in what I think makes for an aethetically pleasing course -- views, hills, woods, less homes, and a nice course are all things I look for. Terravista is a nice course, but that's about it. I like more mature courses that are cut out of the hills/trees with houses that are spread out just a bit more or nestled in the context of the course, not glaring side by side all the way down the course. On some courses, the rough area or distance between the fairway and the homes is larger too.

I understand why homes are on golf courses, I'm not an idiot, I just think in the case of terravista and a lot of newer courses in my opinion, the developers jam as many houses on the course as they can, understandably.

Just a last word from my point of view, the other day I was playing a twilight round and was on a green on top of a hill, over looking a valley and other hill country views. Sure there were houses, but I watched the sun drop below the horizon as I putted for birdie, uh, well, double bogey, but it felt like I was putting for birdie. Woods were all around and the houses were nestled around the green behind the trees and along the fairway behind the trees. The sand traps were well designed around the green, the green was in solid shape, the fairway was perfect and the fringe of the green was crisp and without weeds or brown spots. That's a perfect golf moment, but for the double bogey. That's what I look for -- the whole package. Terravista is a great course to play, but its hardly the whole package in my opinion and I guess I don't find the critique of a course lacking the whole package an odd complaint, but that's just me.

I agree with you that Teravista isn't perfect by any means, but it's a great deal for the money and it does have it's fair share of very nice holes. I can understand some of your complaints, I just think I-35 and IKEA are pretty weak reasons for not liking the course. The houses jammed along every fairway are a different story, and yeah, I prefer courses with almost no houses if I can get them.

Back to the thread topic though, I played a twilight round at Star Ranch today and it was in awesome condition. I started about 5:45 and was able to get in a full 18 holes! Can you believe that?

Anyone know what kind of shape Riverside is in these days? I have out of town guests coming in and we were all set to play Teravista. One guy is...frugal...and refuses to pay $70 for a morning tee time. One of the other guys is balking at playing Lions/Jimmy Clay/etc. Last I knew, Riverside was in pretty bad shape but had changed owners and new ownership was trying to fix it up.

I'm actually near the point where I would just pay the difference between a muni and Teravista for my frugal friend, but if Riverside has shaped up, it might be a decent compromise.

He won't play Kizer? I think it's better than Riverside, although I haven't played either one of them in the last few years.

don't take out of town guests to Riverside. Seriously.

If you can't get them to agree on Star Ranch, Teravista, etc, do what Chitwood said and go to Kizer

I hate frugal friends
