Best golf courses in Austin for ~$75 on the weekends? I have only been to Jimmy Clay a couple of times so my course knowledge is lacking...

Roy Kizer (next to Jimmy Clay) is one of my favorites. Lions/Muny is another good one. The private courses are good, but not as good as the above -- unless you can get on to Austin Country Club.

Avery Ranch is a nice track and it runs exactly $75 a round. You can play one of the muni's cheaper but it will take 5 hours to play the round.

You can also check Teravista in Round Rock and Falconhead near Lakeway.

Avoid Kizer at all costs right now (currently April 14th). I played there Saturday last, and 5-6 of the greens are completely gone - nothing but sand. Not a construction effort - they either burned 'em out, or the punch/overseed process didn't take. Regardless, even the "good" grees were below average at best. They always recover from stuff like this, but this one is going to take months, not weeks. Avoid for a while.

to answer the OP - the short list in the austin area is Avery, TeraVista, Star Ranch and Forest Creek. call them up, find out which one has the best conditions on the greens, and go there. For slightly less money, Bluebonnet Hill always does a great job with their conditions, but the track is pretty tame. If you feel like driving, ColoVista in bastrop and Delaware Springs in Burnet are EXCELLENT tests of golf.

Golf512.com is your friend, in general. There are tons of courses in the area.

everything capn said is correct

no offense to dogbert, but he is 100% incorrect, but I must point out that most courses in Austin are not private. Most are either munis or public.

Grey Rock GC (aka Circle C) is another great track I like a lot. Every other course Capn mentioned are good choices as well, though I will say I played Forest Creek a week ago and their fairways and greens were burnt pretty bad. Definitely playable, but not what I would call great conditions.

yeah, I got to agree with unpainted--I belong to a mediocre club in town, but it is definitely a better course than Lions or Kizer.

Thanks for the heads up,UCLA. I actually booked Teravista for Saturday AM and Forest Creek for Friday. I think I will cancel the FC tee time and go w/ Shadow Glen or Avery Ranch.

Ugh, Shadow Glen... That course is about as gimmicky as a course gets. As a co-worker put it, "I half expected to see a windwill on the putting green."

Play Avery Ranch if you can afford it. It is in another world compared to Shadow Glen. Avery Ranch + Teravista in one weekend and you've basically hit some of the best golf Austin has to offer (public). I'll be out at Teravista on Saturday as well, whens your tee time?

have you guys played Teravista lately? My parents played there Monday and didn't think it was in very good shape, especially compared to Star Ranch, which they played yesterday. It is possible they don't know what they are talking about. I do like Star Ranch better anyway.

That would be a big time bummer if true. Teravista has always been in pretty good condition regardless of when I've played there. Same goes for Star Ranch. Guess I'll find out on Saturday.

I like Avery the best. The wind at TerraVista is non-stop. It drives me crazy! Heard good stuff about Falconhead but I haven't played it yet.

Hmm... I'm thinking Star Ranch will be best for Saturday AM, given the allegedly good conditions (not to mention a free lunch/dinner!

). Avery is almost double TeraVista's price for a Friday afternoon tee time, so unless TV is as bad as chitwood reported I think that might be our best bet...

I talked to the parents again--TV wasn't in bad shape--greens were a little slow, and the fairways were a little "rough"--they said it was like the course was new. I imagine it's not too bad.

I've played both Forest Creek and Star Ranch in the past week. Star Ranch is in excellent condition right now, probably the best I've ever seen it. Forest Creek isn't really bad, the fairways are pretty hard but they are definitely green. Forest Creek's greens are in pretty good shape too, although a little fast on the day I played. I've driven by Teravista a couple times in the last few weeks and it appears to be in great shape from the road, but you know how that goes.

anyone played Avery recently?

I am playing there tomorrow and wondered if they had punched.

Also, Teravista punched today.

sorry.

Thanks for the review WT. I actually got a little scared at the comments about TV and changed reservations... final-go is Forest Creek tomorrow and Star Ranch on Sat.

We should start a thread for Austin golf course conditions (post every time you play). Anybody think that would be useful/successful? I don't know how often some of you play, but that would be neat...

Ah, niner, so that's where you are going to be tomorrow?

My parents played Avery today--I think it's in good shape.

Wow, are you serious? You are comparing Austin Country Club to Star Ranch?

Thats like comparing a McLaren F1 to a Kia Rio.

And damn the punching of the greens at TV! Why this week, the week I have a tee time there

dogbert, this was your post..."Roy Kizer (next to Jimmy Clay) is one of my favorites. Lions/Muny is another good one. The private courses are good, but not as good as the above -- unless you can get on to Austin Country Club. "

a) I love Kizer for what it is.

b) I really don't understand how anyone can claim that Lions is better than the private courses in Austin. If you're talking about the ability to get on and play (and/or cost) I can maybe see what you mean, but in terms of quality there is no comparison

c) regarding your last post...nobody was disagreeing with you that ACC wasn't a great course

Played Forest Creek earlier today. Greens have been aerated recently--looked like a crater field, and my ball jumped all over the place. I liked FC's scenery, but I don't know that it was worth the drive...

Perhaps I am partial to Kizer, Jimmy Clay and Muny because they are older Austin courses, I played them often and I'm familiar with them. They are not maintained as well as the private courses around the Austin area, but I like the layouts.

Just got back from Star Ranch (tee'd off around 9:20). The round was pretty slow--around 5 hours with a lot of waiting--but the greens were nice. Overall, the course was in great condition. There was an occasional rough spot or problem area, but they were very infrequent (I think one of the holes had heavy armadillo rooting damage... probably a result of construction in the area). Great course, but can get a little windy on the higher-elevation holes.

One thing I did notice was the amount of CIGARETTE BUTTS lying everywhere near tees and greens. People who throw these on the ground need to let their face meet my driver. Other people who need to have said meeting are those who don't rake their sand trap mess or fill in their divets. I'm not a good golfer by any means (shot a measly 97 today), but learn some damn etiquette.

Just got back from Teravista myself. Had a 5 hour round as well. We tee'd off at 11am.

The greens were punched, but it looked like it happened at least a week ago as the punched greens had little effect on putting. Greens were a perfect speed overall. Definitely no real complaints. The fairways were dry as a mother ****** though which made for some tight lies but for as windy as Teravista is all the time, thats to be expected.

Played the front 9 at Forest Creek yesterday and shot a 46, which is about the best I can do at that impossibly hard course. I didn't notice any problems on the greens, they looked pretty nice, although not as good as Star Ranch when I played last week.

I hate terravista - clogged greens, nice fairways, I-35, Ikea and construction all around.

haven't played avery.

forest creek is a good course, but too far out, haven't played in years.

for munis I love jimmy clay, not sure why. the number 10 hole with the elevated green is one of my favorites.

I live in Lakeway so I tend to play close out there. played 9 at twilight on like oak for the first time this evening -- terrible overall course, at least the front nine. no sand (that I could tell), some water, greens were sandy. the fairways are very well maintained.

I also played Yaupon a few weeks ago, also a 9 hole twilight round. that's a great course with no star power in its name. the greens were solid (not too fast, not too slow, but not a lot of movement either), the fairways were great and the fringe around the greens were perfect. sand was a bit compacted, but it was at the end of the day, so who knows. of course, this was only the front 9. Had a great time. water, sand, trees pinching in on the fairway. lots of fun.

haven't played falconhead, might do that on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.
