Going to Boulder

so i just bought 2 plane tckets, 2 nights in a hotel, and a car rental for october 3rd - 5th in Denver for slightly less than $700 total. A friend of mine and I are going to go to the Texas-Colorado game on the 4th (since well, we will be there).

So the question is, what cool stuff is there to do in Denver...we will be arriving at 11:30 AM local time on Friday so we have time to do stuff...Ive been to other parts of Colorado, but never the Denver area...

If you 're interested and want to go see and tour the Denver Mint, you need to have reservations (check their website)...last time I was there, we just tried to walk up and left disappointed.

Don't wear your horn gear to the game unless you want jackass frat guy getting in your face every ten feet. Their fans are on the UCF level.

As far as bars you might want to re-post closer to Oct since the bars change quite a bit. If you want to do the tourist thing, I'd go to Golden and do a Coors tour. It last about 45 minutes and it's pretty cool. They give you a sample of the coldest, freshest beer you'll ever taste half-way thru the tour and then you get 3 free drinks with your wrist-band afterwards. If you go on a TH or F it's not real crowded and there are alot of people who take the "short tour" which means you skip the tour and go straight to the bar for the free drinks. If you go, bring some dominoes for 42 or bring a deck of cards for spades. There will be some School of Mines students there drinking/playing as well. Surprinsingly, there are some cute engineers who like to party.

Blackhawk is where the casinoes are and it's about 30-45 minutes from Denver depending where you are at. It's really close to Golden and would be good to hit after/before the brewery tour. Ameristar and the Lodge have good poker rooms, usually younger crowd w/o oxygen tanks but the table games suck. They have $5 minimum/maximum bets on blackjack, no craps, but they do have some 3 card poker tables that allow you to bet more which are decent. I don't play slots but I'm assuming it's pretty much the same as anywhere else.

As far as getting some runs in - that could possibly be the first weekend for Loveland or A-Basin to open but it will depend on the weather in September if they can make snow or not. Those 2 resorts compete each year to see which can open first. I think this year A-Basin won and i think it was TX-OU weekend. Two years ago Loveleand was open but after picking my UT friends at the airport (being 80 degrees) by time we got into the mountains a storm hit so we turned around and spent about 6 hours in the casino.

As far as some strong rita's/horrible food hit up the Rio downtown. Good scene on Friday for a starting point. As far as nudie bars(not as friendly or talent like Texas), you'll want to go to Shotgun Willie's. Friendliest pretty girls in Denver. There's a cool steakhouse called the Buckhorn Exchange that you might like - I think it's the oldest restaurant in Denver.

As far as Boulder, the 2 times I've been we have gotten in fights. Most people are cool but they have some really ignorant fans who know nothing about sports. Chicks aren't too cute. There's a grocery store that sells the hotel bottles of liquor that are good to bring into the game.

There will be a ton of Horns there because CU doesn't draw well and it's a good road game. Last time I remember doing Texas Fight across the stadium. Always good times!

I took the brewery tour in Golden and would also recommend it. I don't drink Coors or particularly care for it, but the brewery operation is pretty amazing. I think it is the single largest brewery in the world, and the scale of this place is mind boggling. At one point you stand over the room where they package all the beer, and you look down on this sea of converyor belts with so many cases whizzing around that you simply cant comprehend it. I just thought it was cool from a operations standpoint.

wearing your UT gear around college station is nothing. when it comes to being 'well behaved' ags are ok for the most part, annoying as all hell but not to the point of fist fights and physical abuse. from everything ive seen/heard, boulder is a bit different.

I am thinking of taking the trip to Boulder for the road game next fall. Handler gave a lot of good info.Curious if anyone else has some insight on the following (questions pulled from BON):Transportation Tips: (Best way to get there, whether a rental car isnecessary, etc.)Fun Local Restaurants: (Again, not really looking for the most expensive or high-end places, just the ones in particular where local football fans like to go before and after games.)Bars: (Night before the game, pre and post game, particularly those that are close to the stadium/campus)

Local Attractions:
(Especially if there's something on campus that all visitors ought to see)

Tailgating Scene:
(Any tips on pre game activities, best places to park, walk around, drink beer, etc.)

Best Way To Get Tickets:
(Any tips on scalping, warnings)

Gameday Traditions:
(Just anything a visiting fan would probably want to know about whether it happens before or during the game.)

I wore my gear the entire weekend last time we played up there. Nobody gave me any problems.

Use to spend a lot of time in Denver. Englewood/Littleton was nice areas if you're taking the spouse. If you want Denver party with minimal effort, stay in the lo-do area (i.e. downtown, 16th St, etc.). Many bar & restaraunts you can walk to. Coors tour is a must. Other than that, go to the nearest ski shop, rent your equipment & get the hell up into the mountains. Avoid CU fans & students like the plague. The depths of their jackassery knows no bounds.

That is all.

No Donny, these colorado students are nihilists, you have nothing to be afraid of.

Don't ever go to an away game and be afraid to wear your horns gear.

I cannot emphasize it enough: For those going, BE CAREFUL. Colorado fans are the sCUm of the Earth.

No way are they worse than Ohio State fans. The Columbus trip in '05 is hands-down, the worst jackassery ever witnessed.

Boulder... Two words: Liquor Mart

I would recommend a microbrew tour over the Coors Tour. Boulder Beer does tours during the week.

As for a bar in Boulder to watch games, I would say The Lazy Dog on Pearl Street Mall.

If you're staying in Boulder, you can likely get by without a car, although it would be beneficial to have one. However, if you're in Denver, you'll definately need a car.

Restaurants in Boulder - For breakfast Lucille's or The Original Pancake House. For a sandwich - Snarf's. For dinner - The Cork or Chophouse for Steak, The Redfish Brewery for Seafood, The Mediterranean - for, well, the name speaks for itself.

Bars in Boulder - The Foundry, Walnut Brewery, Conor O'Neills, and Mountain Sun Brewery (Pearl Street). If you want to be near the campus, The SInk is in the University Hill district. Margaritas - The Rio Grande.

TXBabe-Go to a Nebraska/sCUm game in Boulder sometime. Then, and only then, will you understand what I mean.

When Nebraska plays in Boulder that place is like a warzone. I have never been to Columbus (though I admit that Ohio State fans look like they're from a third world country on television), but I cannot imagine them being worse than the sCUm fans we deal with.

Are you kidding? You always wear your orange on the road.

CO horn has some great ideas.

A number of people like to drive up to Estes. The moose will be on the golf course around that time, and it is VERY beautiful. Please, for everybody's sanity do not drive it if you lack confidence on mountain roads.

The drive up Canyon road into Nederland with a stop at Boulder Falls is fun - if the weather allows, the hike to the falls is something you will remember.

Have no fear to wear your orange and to be as proud as you like. Fun, proud, respectful fans are treated well. People who walk around with chips on their shoulder and a huge dose of arrogance are treated as most people might treat that type of person - whether or not they are Buff fans.

There are a lot of urban myths about Buff fans. I have seen jerks wearing my beloved black and gold. In my travels, I have seen jerks wearing colors of all sorts of teams. Last time in Austin, I was amazed that while 95% of the stadium appeared to be normal, educated, fun people - the 5% that surrounded the visitors area had more mullets, missing teeth, and sunburnt backs than any other place I have seen.

Next time, I will pay for the upgrade of sitting about four sections over.

I will also pay for a sammich to put in the mouth of the "snowboards for sale!" guy. Apparently he thought I paid to see him.

Any sane, fun, proud, orange wearing horn will be welcome to tailgate with the group I hang with when I go home for games (I live in Texas with y'all). It is not unusual to have fans of other teams stop by and enjoy some good eats and drinks before a game. PM me if interested!

It may be too late for the OP, but for the rest of you, avoid Denver all together and spend your Friday and Saturday in Boulder. In my opinion, spending any time in Denver is missing the whole point of the trip. It's like being a CU fan from Colorado spending Friday in Houston or Dallas or San Antonio and then driving to Austin on Saturday for the game. Is that the real UT football experience???

I'll echo everything said. Coors is great, though this time we are going to go up to Fort Collins and visit the New Belgium brewery. Never been there so looking forward to that one.

FYI, the Texas Exes will NOT be setting up shop this year at the Millennuim Harvest Hotel. They are already booked for that weekend with a different conference. Another hotel hasn't been decided upon yet, but that will hopefully happen soon.

mike, i realize it would take a foray into the mountains, but have you been to tommyknocker brewery in idaho springs?

it is a far niftier experience than fort fun, imho.
