Going for it from the 1 is almost always the right move. Even with perfect kicking, going for it yields more expected points as long as you can score the TD 42% of the time (and average is somewhere upwards of 60%). In addition, a FG attempt generally gives the other team the ball around their own 25. Even when you fail on 4th down, you generally get the silver lining of giving them the ball around their own 1 - decreasing their odds of scoring on that possession as well as increasing your odds of scoring on your next one.

But if we'd gone for it and made it, the next play we might have gotten sacked and turned it over. So it was better to kick a FG we knew we wouldn't make than to risk converting a fourth down.

What was the down distance? I think it was 8 yards. 4th and long seems like it has always been unwise and unlikely.

Wasn't it on the 30 or 31 yard line?

It was about a 47-yarder, so yes, probably around the 30.

so you never punt on the 30, and 4th and long is terrible odds...seems like a good football move for a team that is a low scoring offense.

When your kicker sucks and your 4th-down conversion rate sucks, any coaching call on 4th down from the 30 is going to be a bad one. Actually, the best one might be to have Rowland or Buechele line up as if for a FG/offense, but then pooch punt it, if either of them can.

i actually wondered earlier in the year if they shouldn't have Heard train to hold. The fake kick, rowland pooch, and actual kick would all be options. and if Heard bobbles it, it's not like he's preventing an automatic 3 points.
