Go Spurs Go!

When (and if) they're healthy, they're going to be good. The problem is that it's going to take a while to get healthy.

We could be looking at a 4, 5, or 6 seed for the playoffs if injuries keep our big 3 off the court.

On the other hand, gotta like what we saw from Mason tonight.

Mason was a great pickup, but any optimism from Spurs fans has got to raise an eyebrow at this point. You could be looking at a 4, 5, or 6 seed even if the Spurs magically got healthy tomorrow. That's not a knock against the Spurs, but simply the nature of the WC.

It's not a good sign when Parker drops a double nickel, Duncan gets 30 and you still have to go to double OT against the freaking Twolves.

Still, Mason is an upgrade over anything they had on the bench last year. He's been better than any Spurs fan could have imagined. And from what little I've seen of George Hill, he is a legitimate rotation player right now. If Mahinmi can be a productive NBA player, and that is a huge IF, then they upgraded the team from last year. All of which is rather shocking to me, based on how I'd perceived their off season.

They've got a million miles to go, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to face a healthy Spurs team in a 7 game series come May or June.

Bumping this after another Spurs win. 6 out of 8 and they finally got Manu back last night for some abbreviated but outstanding minutes. I love what I've seen from Mason and Hill. Lots of good things going on. I consider it a borderline miracle that they're over .500 right now.

That's OK. The young guys are getting a lot of playing time and should be ready for the playoffs. Wouldn't want to be the team that meets the Spurs in the first round.

Coach of the Year race is already over. Pop wins hands down. This Spurs team has NO business being anywhere around .500.

No kidding. With 2 of the big 3 gone I was looking at SA's schedule figuring they'd be 5-11 or 4-12 by the end of November.

They certainly have shown tenacity in fighting through the adversity. Mason has been a very pleasant surprise. I believe they will have a run in them down the stretch if they can stay healthy.

The best thing out of early injuries is getting the new guys extended experience... starting them, having them on the floor in the final 2 minutes. This is going to help the rookie alot and I think this is good for Roger Mason too.

I still don't have very high hopes for this team. I just don't like the depth very much. And we're terrible on the boards. If healthy the rest of the year, I'd say we're a 4-6 seed. The west is ridiculous.

That George Hill kid is pretty good - better than I expected. 19 in a win tonight against the Bulls.

Spurs have won 7 out of the last 10, including 3 in a row.

Hill is the real deal. He could be an All-Star down the road - and makes the Spurs ridiculously deep at the point when Parker comes back. Parker, Hill, Mason, Vaughn, and in a pinch Ginobili. Picture a small lineup in some instances of Duncan, Parker, Hill, Mason and Ginobili - wow!

I dunno, guys. I like the Spurs as much as it's possible for me to like an NBA ballclub, but that team is so broken, it'll probably be years before it contends again.

Parker is solid but streaky. Not necessarily a guy to build a team around, but a good No.2 next to Duncan.

Ginobili should've been traded in the offseason while his value was still high. Manu's game is athleticism and aggressiveness. His attack-the-basket mindset might never fade, but his legs sure will, if they haven't already. And, unlike other leaper/slashers (Finley is an example), Manu won't have a set shot to fall back on.

Then there's Finley and Bowen. Great guys and great teammates, but, at this point in their careers, neither should be starting for any NBA team, anywhere. Good thing for them there's San Antonio.

Duncan's still a force, and he will continue to be because he can do what he does well into his 40s. Explosiveness has never been a part of his game, which has always been about smarts and skill.

And what else do the Spurs have inside? Nothing. Kurt Thomas is marginal at best (and a waste of a first-round draft pick, too), Oberto's strength is passing (not exactly a must-have for a 4 or 5), Matt Bonner is ... well, Matt Bonner, and, gee, what else you got? Mahinmi? Tolliver?

Mason and Hill have surprised and impressed. But even if they win more minutes and supplant Finley and spell Parker, respectively, the Spurs will still be woefully outclassed inside.

Enjoy the season. Consider it a success if they make the playoffs, but don't expect or dare hope for anything more until the front office stops bringing in tired old retreads and makes a play for some talented youths to complement Duncan and Parker.

When he's healthy, Parker is awesome. All the Spurs need is another legitimate inside force and they will be fine for the foreseeable future.

I agree he's not the best point in the league. He was, however, consistently the best player on the Spurs last year, and was this year prior to getting injured.

The Spurs will be fine ... maybe not "win a title this year" great ... but fine.

Mason and Hill make them better than they were last year, when they made the conference finals. Now, I think the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets are all better, too, so it might be a wash.

Also, keep in mind this is somewhat of a transition year between "old" and "rebuilding." Their core will still be young enough to contend the next few years, and they should have the cap space to add a couple of pieces, especially in 2010.

I wouldn't mind, say, adding LaMarcus Aldridge next to Duncan in 2010.

Um, I know it's just December ... but these guys look pretty good to me.

Won 10 of their last 14, the last two by 18 and 35.
