Gingrich To Obama: Let's Debate, Teleprompters OK

In the video on the page linked below, Newt Gingrich says he will challenge Barack Obama to seven Lincoln-style debates if he becomes the Republican nominee (with time limits for each speaker, but with no moderator and no external questioning). He concedes that if Obama wants to use his teleprompter during the debates, that will be OK with him.
He also says that if Obama refuses, he will use the (Obama) White House as his scheduler and follow Obama around from city to city, speaking shortly after him everywhere Obama goes, reissuing the debate challenge until Obama agrees.

Clearly, Gingrich has no respect for Obama. But of course respect is earned and Obama has not earned it yet. However, if he wanted to earn some respect in a hurry, all Obama would need to do is accept the debate challenge from Gingrich the first time it was issued and then mop the floor with Gingrich during their first few meetings.

And everyone would be able to see the outcome for themselves live on national Television. Seven debates with no moderator would be epic to say the least. But of course Obama would have to believe he was up to the challenge for it to even happen.

I like the idea of getting rid of the moderators. I feel that they don't add much to the discussion constantly asking about wedge issues and not the more substantive issues of the day. There are no guarantees that the candidates will be better, but I'll take my chances.

Bill Clinton, a moderate Democrat by most people's estimation, weighs in with praise for Newt Gingrich and his efforts to win the Republican nomination.

If Obama is man enough to accept the challenge, then everyone will be able to judge the winner for themselves. If he does not accept it, then everyone will know what a cowardly, pretentious little ***** that he is.

One way is by providing an enticing vision of what he will do if he is elected to be the Republican nominee. And this image of Gingrich challenging Obama to a series of televised debates, which Obama will either accept or find Gingrich following Obama around from city to city speaking shortly after him and renewing the challenge (which would have the effect of making Obama look like he is running away in more ways than one), is an image that most Republicans and conservatives will find very enticing indeed.

Of course what is even a more enticing vision is the expected result should Obama actually face Gingrich in these debates.

This presentation will resonate strongly with the Republican constituency and will likely help Gingrich's election prospects quite substantially.

New is also a political blue blood. He isnt some new guy on the scene. Hes old school Washington establishment. Our financial and foreign policies are not likely to change under Newt.

We all thought Obama was going to be hope and change, but in reality, its just more of the same. Dont expect anything different from Newt.

Making a challenge, any type of challenge- and then questioning the manhood if the other person doesn't accept the challenge?

What if you just think the idea behind the challenge is stupid? What if Newt is afraid of moderators because he doesn't want his past personal life brought into the debates just as Obama had to address his in 2008?

I prefer moderators. Imagine Perry if he was allowed to just 'talk' without someone to guide him in a productive manner- that would be horrible. You can't let two opponents just go at it for an hour- frankly it's beneath the seat of the office to do that, second they could get stuck on tangents and repeat themselves for 45 minutes, third- moderators ensure that a diverse set of topics are covered.

Cute Mojo- they're both from Illinois. Great point. We're both from Texas. So what.

Lincoln debated in the 1860's, and while they did have partisan bickering- I'm pretty sure that had the country had an epic failure on hand 1860's style, the Congress of the day could come together to resolve it. We live in 2011 where bipartisan committees would rather stick to principles than help a country and its economy. Where people obsess that they would rather win an election than see Congress move forward together. Where Grover Norquist controls more votes than Congressional Reps do. Where lobbyists and companies can essentially buy votes.

If Newt and Obama could have the same civility as did Lincoln Douglas- you might have a point. But, you don't, and this ain't 1860.

Congress came together to resolve differences in the mid 1800's?

How about during the Constitutional Convention, remember the 3/5th Compromise?

That is great compromise to hang a hat on!!

Please help me out with some historic compromises during the 1800's that were good for the country?

I'm on record as not liking Gingrich. However, I do think getting away from the superficial soundbite debate structure we currently use to appeal to idiots and adopting a Lincoln-Douglas style debate structure that thinking people can follow would be far more productive.

Do you think the ex-wife Newt divorced on her death bed while he was boning, and later marrying another woman considers Newt a 'civil' guy?

How does wife #2 feel about Newt?

But I guess "family values" don't count for much now, eh?

It amazes me that the mainstream media jumped all over the rumor mill when it came to Cain but is completely silent about Gingrich. Not knowing the full story, I just read up on Gingrich and it's actually worse than I thought. I wonder if the MSM knows Gingrich would probably lose to Obama and is just remaining quiet so that he can win the Republican nomination.

As to the debating skills of Gingrich... he would absolutely destroy Obama.

Newt Gingrich:

1) Gingrich has been married three times. In 1962, he married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old and she was 26. In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left Battley after having an affair with Marianne Ginther. In 1984, Battley told the Washington Post that the divorce was a "complete surprise" to her. According to L.H. Carter, his campaign treasurer, Gingrich said of Battley: "She's not young enough or pretty enough to be the wife of the President. And besides, she has cancer."

2. Six months after the divorce from Battley was final, Gingrich wed Marianne Ginther in 1981. In the mid-1990s, Gingrich began an affair with House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek, who is 23 years his junior. They continued their affair during the Lewinsky scandal, when Gingrich became a leader of the investigation of President Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his alleged affairs.

3. In 2000, Gingrich married Bisek shortly after his divorce from second wife Ginther.

Mojo-

Chill out. This wasn't from a media source- it was wikipedia [insert Wiki snype here]. Second- the Wiki page also refers to the controversy about the first divorce.

Anyways, the less controversial part is he married his high school teacher at age 19. Later, he had an affair while married to his teacher. Then on his second marriage with the adulteress- he had an affair and later married an assistant 23 years younger than him. And that's the non-controversial part that no one disputes.

Trust the guy who cheats on two different wives, and has no issues with big age swaps. The age thing- well, whatever works for you Newt.
