Gingrich soars to the top of the Republican field

Newt Gingrich has pulled to within two points of Mitt Romney in the most recent CNN poll of Republican presidential candidates, which is within the poll's margin of error. Also, many of the more knowledgeable conservative leaning pundits appear to be coming to the conclusion that this race is likely to be primarily between Romney and Gingrich as we move into the actual primaries.
Of course that does not automatically make it so. But the first primary is in just over 6 weeks, so time is running short. If anyone else is going to make a serious run, they had better get on it.

As far as Newt Gingrich goes, it appears that the timing of his current surge to the top is impeccable.

So it's going to be the phony plastic rich dude against the pompous professor--I'm so old that I remember when Rs scoffed at professors/educator types. Good choices you guys have there.

When is Fred Thompson going to arouse from his slumber and surge to the top of the clown car poll?

Newt Gingrich is a truly brilliant man, and a man of depth and substance when it comes to politics and world affairs.

On the other hand, Barack Obama is an empty suit who has demonstrated he is not up to the job and who cannot run on his record because he has failed miserably as President over the last three years.

If Gingrich wins the Republican nomination, I cannot wait to see the debates between these two. Gingrich will mop the floor with Obama in a way that will be spoken of in song, legend and lore for many years to come.

I think Newt is the next President of the United States. If he can get the GOP nomination, Him being President is a done deal.

Obama is just clueless about everything he does. He just approved 4 million in aid to China for green jobs.

This is a country we are in big debt to and he's giving them aid. Not sure how a guy from the IVY league can be so dumb.

It's kinda hilarious seeing the repubs play musical chairs.

First it was Bachmann. A few days under the spotlight and the fruitcake melted away.

Then they thought Perry was the saviour - the anti-Romney, the guy with a "terrific record of jobs in texas", until he Perry'd himself.

Cain was then the darling of the TP until it became a she said, he said, she said, she said, she said deal. Whoosh went Cain's chances.

The worm has turned full circle. Now it's back to Gingrich - the ultimate washington insider, the first speaker reprimanded for ethics violations. A philanderer who has had one wife too many for the evangelicals to stomach.

And so the circus goes on. Optimism among the TP rises up again...........until it falls again! Kinda like the aggy season.

I guess all the silly obamites forget the ' musical chairs" among the Dem nominees during 07 and early 08?
This is part of the process as it has been for many elections.

Mojo,

I think you are comparing apples to oranges. Obama had no accomplishments in his life but being a great campaigner. He's never had a job unless you count community organizer. Romney was a very successful business man. Newt has proven to be very successful as the Speaker. Cain is also a very good business man. Nothing given to these guys. Obama got elected dispite not showing up to vote 1/3 of the time, voted present another 1/3 of the time and only voted yes or no with the majority on his side 1/3 of the time. He's never been a leader by doing but by promising things to get elected and a few things he has followed through with have been a disaster.

The issue is that the only electable candidates are the ones who are furthest removed from the theocrats. I must admit that it would be fun to watch the "values voters" campaign for Gingrich, or for the "religious right" campaign for a Mormon.

The country has 9+% unemployment, 15 trillion dollar debt, debt/GDP of 100%, $1.5 trillion dollar deficit, bleak growth outlook for the next year, etc. But the GOP changing front-runners is a "pathetic spectacle"? I think the author needs some perspective. Getting his head out of his colon might help.

So who then has a chance to beat Obama in your opinion?
I think your fooling yourself, but whatever makes you feel better about the situation.

Yeah, Gingrich the Newt, he would be excellent. You think anyone would be unkind enough to bring up the fact he divorced his wife while she was on her deathbed to marry a staffer, then divorced her, then...nah, no one would bring that up.

Obama must feel the same way as Bush because after Bin Laden's death Obama has not changed his stance on Afghanistan or the war on terror.

Newt is the flavor of the month. It's ******* incredible that the 2nd most major politcal party of the United States cannot put forth a formidable candidate for the highest office in the land.

Hook'em!!!

Of course it will come as no surprise to the thinking participants on this message board that the usual suspects on the left are united in their opposition to every Republican candidate

And of course that naturally includes Newt Gingrich.
