Gilbert to announce college plans Thurs

I'm pretty sure Mack said he would start calling Juniors to make offers on Thursday and Friday. It wouldn't surprise me if Gilbert is the first call.

This was just a formality, waiting for the '08 class to sign first. I love this kid. He will be a leader and no doubt wanted to be the first guy to commit to the '09 class. Curious on Shepard but I think our staff has a plan there.

Sean on 1530 ESPN was alluding to a big announcement regarding '09 recruits that would make Texas fans happy. GG is most likely the subject of the announcement. Just because Texas wasn't on the list doesn't mean he hasn't gotten an offer since signing day. He is an amazing fit for the system and has the legs to still run a zone-read type of running offense. A&M is where QBs go to die and Nebraska would be a long shot. Cal is the only other school I would be worried about.

Mack's official policy is to not make scholarship offers prior to National Signing Day for the next year's class. That doesn't mean that unofficial discussions have not taken place, or there was no interest in a prospect.
Mack likes to let the current signees have their moment in the sun before everyone turns their attention to the next group, which obviously starts the moment the ink is dry on the commit forms.
I expect good news from Gilbert.

I watched Mack's press conference and he said a lot about in the past we have done this although times have changed...

It seemed like he was speaking of this type situation. He also said that today he would be recruiting for 09 class. I expect that we will hear that Gilbert is ours.

This Gilbert cat reminds me a lot of one 'Steel Shank' back in his high school playing days in the early 80s. And we all know where that 5 star kid went.

I know Garrett Gilbert is probably no relation to rb Chris Gilbert from the 60's, but it would be nice to have another Gilbert on the 40 acres. Chris and the rest of that gang are why I became a Longhorn as a small youth, good memories indeed.

I don't believe he has any direct family link to UT.

I know Garrett's dad played for Cal back in the early 80's and was the starting QB in the '82 game that had what is arguably the most famous play in NCAA history - the kickoff return through the Stanford band on the game's final play.

His dad also was a perenial backup in the NFL and was on five consecutive Super Bowl teams in the 90's with Buffalo and San Diego - all losses.

It seems pretty certain that he is headed here. I dont think it will affect what Sheperd does. Shepherd will be all world wheter he is a quarterback, running back, or any position.

I agree, all those people worrying about us not taking Shepard because of another QB this year, can put that concern to rest right now, we take both.
End of discussion. By the way, Shepard is a much better passer than Vince was at this stage.

bishophorn,

I have seen both Vince and Sheppard at this stage in their career's. Vince was better to me in that Sheppard doesn't look comfortable throwing the ball.
