Go up 7 they only need one score. Up 4 or 7, either way they need one score and it has to be a TD. Go up 10 and they have to score twice and we probably win. The difference there is more impactful. And that's before considering the difference field position and the time run off the clock. So not only are the odds in your favor to succeed, the reward when succeeding is larger than the penalty for failing.

The stupid thing is that if they really wanted to throw, those sideline outs are available. Clock starts after the ball is placed. Eagles and Smith had some good catches along the sideline earlier. First downs would win the game. Punting doesn't.
