Fozzy expected to play

Gideon leads youth movement

Eight freshmen and 10 redshirt freshmen saw action for the first time Saturday, and Longhorn coaches showered many of them with praise Monday. None moreso than freshman safety Blake Gideon from Leander.

"All the critical factors it takes to be a good defensive back, he exhibits," said defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Gideon enrolled in January for the spring semester, and he made a positive impression in the spring scrimmage, Muschamp recalled. "That's when we figured this guy could help us."

I have a good feeling about those guys!

I agree, can't wait. To tide you over and get you excited I have a highlight clip of Foz for you. Notice how at the beginning he is restrained, tries to get out. Around 1:00 or so he moves left, right, left, right again and just watch those moves!!! He does Hollywood it a bit but hey, it's all part of the performance, I guess.

Enjoy!!!

That's good news. GD seemed really high on fozzy before he got hurt. Fozzy should really do well as a recipient of all those short passes that Colt has been throwing this season (in addition to normal runs, of course).

Would really like to see fozzy and Vondrell in the game at the same time. I am actually amazed that vondrell did not get hurt on that one devastating tackle where his leg was twisted completely the wrong way (Vondrell grabbed his knee immediately after the play).

Good. For as efficient as our offense was, I felt like we lacked that big play threat. Colt was our most dynamic play maker in terms of breaking tackles, making people miss, and making yards out of nothing. While nice to see, I'd like to see the rest of our offense make some jaw making plays. For the most part we looked workman like, but not spectacular.

Workman like maybe, but to the tone of 503 yards!

This was a great team win. I agree, McCoy was our most dynamic player. Which is great when he played, he touched the ball every down on offense. We had 9 different receivers catch a pass, six of whom caught 3 or more. Throw in an interception and a fumble recovery from the defense which held them scoreless in the second half.

The UT offense was craftsman like:
* short passing game was clearly improved from last year.
* O line much better (hugely important)
* power running game is improved (cody Johnson is the power runner that UT has lacked since Cedric graduated)
* UT has 3 tall deep threats (Malcolm, Buckner, and DJ Grant) compared to zip last year after Limas got hurt
* Quan and Ship provide better leadership than the O team had last year
* Ship has improved his aggressiveness on 50-50 balls
* Blaine Irby was outstanding both blocking and catching
* colt was way more under control, not trying to force the ball but smart enough to take what the D was giving him (i.e. the the 10 yard run or short pass).
* No turnovers
* 4 of 5 passing by Chiles
* Ogbonnaya is noticeably quicker

FAU was playing a prevent D after a while so the big play opportunities just were not there. Colt did just about all of his running on QB draws or rollouts (rather than QB zone reads). That is very encouraging to me because he has always been excellent running the draw and can throw very well on the rollout (and runs well off the rollout if the D focuses on pass D).

The horns' offense looked crisp and methodical which is something we did not see so much last year. Last year the horns tended to live or die by the big play. This year I have the feeling that the horns will be able to hang onto the ball when they need by moving the chains reliably. That will be a huge boost to the D when we play OU (for example).

Can't wait to see this kid take the field. I want see what he can do!

The last couple of guys from Brazoria County (HOLLA!) -- Quentin Jammer and Ahmard Hall -- both worked out pretty well for us, so I hope the trend continues.

Lol some people are never satasfied lol

3 yards and a cloud of dust. It still applies. I always remember the words of my high school coach. If we get 4 yards on a play, it was a success. Our backs were averaging this, so I would call it a success.

I saw highlights only, but what impressed me most about McCoy was the strength of his throws. This is the first game since the KSU debacle that he really zipped the ball, particularly when he was on the move. He looked like a completely different QB. Granted it was only FAU, but I was pleasantly impressed.

I was not impressed nor pleased by a couple of clear late or out of bounds hits on McCoy, something the opponents must be picking up from the ATM game films.

Vondrell averaged over 5 ypc. He only received 12 carries because the coaches needed to look at more players. If he'd had 20 carries, I have no doubt he would have gained over 100 yards. We simply didn't need that from him this game.

I expected our o-line to be considerably improved over last year, and so far they appear to be fulfilling that expectation. We'll know more as the level of competition increases in the coming weeks. So far, I'm really happy with where our offense is headed.

This isn't the NFL, folks. 5 ypc doesn't necessarily mean everything is hunky dory. Florida Atlantic had a terrible defense made worse by injuries. They allowed an average of over 4.7 yards per carry last year for the season. In the Sun Belt. The above poster was correct that our running game didn't look as sharp as it will need to be against our better opponents.

Fortunately for us, of course, this was only the first game. Plenty of time to fine tune the running game and getting Whitaker in action will only help.

Just a matter of perspective. Last year, Arkansas State allowed 4.08 ypc on average for the entire season. They held Texas to 3.08 ypc in our season opener against them.

So, compared to the same point last year, against a somewhat comparable opponent from the same conference, like I said-- I'm pleased with the direction we're headed.

And back to the point of the original post, I too am eager to see what Fozzy can do.

Did you miss the part where I was responding to the contention that everything was fine because we averaged over 5 yards per carry?

I was countering the argument that averaging just over 5 yards per carry is evidence all by itself that everything was fine with the running game.

The point is, against one of the weakest defenses we will see, we did not have any explosive runs, or even really any explosive plays by the receiver after the catch. McGee did well, but against a team like FAU I expect us to be able to break a few tackles and get a long run. Watch any of the other top programs against the nobodies, you'll find at least a couple of plays where a running back made someone miss, broke a tackle, and made an explosive gain. Outside of McCoy, we didn't have that.

We were efficient, but not explosive, that is just the way the game played out. We will need other play makers to show off their stuff if we want to be really successful this season. Charles filled this role last year, we need someone else to step up and be that threat. It can't just be McCoy.

You can say what you want about FAU, they were well coached and fairly disciplined. My glass is half full on this issue: lots of young o-lineman getting real playing time, and a stable of stud young RBs who each bring something a little different to the game. It will not take long for this O to learn how to run downhill with a rotation of fresh RBs. Defenses have to bring more bodies to the line, and then you see your explosive plays. The offense is going to do fine. They will be good this season. They will be deadly by next season.

Given that it was only our first game, our young players are still learning how to play together, and we probably didn't even unveil 50% of our playbook, I'll withhold judgment on the explosiveness of our offense for a little while. There will be plenty of time for that if things don't go well in October.

Kafka said it. i see every reason to de-caution and let in the sunshine.

this team looks more for real than we are able to admit this early, some question marks are still bent, but there are some mighty nice surprise pieces in place for something special and that's how i'm gonna root for things. love you all, so damn good to be a Horn! thank your god you're not an aggie.

continue on you little dog worshiping t.u. snickerboxes, cry me a river between you and baylor and slap the dr. pepper sponsorship on it and call it something brazos.

Sorry Fozzy wasn't ready to go for FAU. It must have been more than a deep bruise. Glad to hear he's ready to get some snaps at UTEP.
