....Coming To Texas!

Was just about a national top-100 four-star recruit in 2011. He was rated as the 2nd or 3rd Pro-style QB in the nation, coming out of HS. Played at Mater Dei, Santa Ana, just 10 miles from where I live in SoCal. He did not play a whole lot at USC in 3 years, as he lost the job to Cody Kessler, I think in 2012, after a redshirt year.

Anyway, he is graduating in three years; so he can play immediately, with 2 years of eligibility left.

Certainly a good one to reel in, at a position of serious depth problems. This, and hopefully the walk-on QB would definitely make it possible for Heard to redshirt in 2014, which is terrific.

Everybody was jumping on Watson as a big problem when he was hired. He has only helped so far... The QB spot which was a big question mark, now has some bodies who can be coached to play. I have to think that Watson will manage to get Ash, Swoopes, Wittek or Bram into at least a serviceable QB, if not better, come this fall.

I am feeling better and better about Charlie's ability to start winning immediately at Texas, because it was so dependent on being lucky to have Ash stay injury-free. But may be we will have some back-up options now.

By the way, I don't think it is a done deal just yet. There are paperwork details and rules on this kind of thing. Not sure if UT and Wittek have reached the final understanding either....

So, we will have to wait to hear some official word on it, but I really hope it happens.

I was working in tbe Bay Area from '84 to '04 and well remember that high school. Either they or their big competition in East Bay, at that time had the national record for wins without a loss. That record was broken by... who? the school in Shreveport? or So. Lake Carroll. Brain fog.

Anyway, glad to see this news.

Seeing as how Kiffin screwed that program up I hope this kid has great potential to be quickly developed.

You are thinking of De la Salle here in the Bay Area. Most of their high profile guys end up at Cal or Notre Dame.

There are reports today that Max Wittek may also consider Louisville and Hawaii. It seems that he has a decided on a visit only to Texas as of now. I'm not sure if it is a done deal or anything. We could really use him, but he may not be that thrilled to just go and be a back up again.

I would think that there is nobody that has been named the starter at Texas. Ash may never play again and Swoopes has like 25 plays of experience.

Seems like a perfect place to win the starting job.

swoopes a bigger better daje...thats not even believable. I think swoopes may end up as a tight end, if he could handle the physicality of the position

I would love to see Vince 2.0 on the field but I don't see Swoopes being that guy. Swoopes has the size but I don't see the speed or the shiftiness. I doubt Ash comes back in the Fall... You have to be cautious with the brain. So this Wittek kid would probably be the first choice. Unless Heard is just that good or Swoopes becomes a monster under the new regime.

The sample size on Swoopes is far too small at this point to know how good of a passer he is. He is not Vince, Jr., but we don't need him to be. Let's give the new coaches some time to assess and coach Swoopes. Hopefully we will have Ash and 2 viable options by the end of Spring.

Agree with Jayakris. Both Vince and Colt were redshirt freshmen. Heard needs to redshirt and be ready to compete in 2015. Hopefully Ash, Swoops and possibly Wittek can handle the job this year.

If Heard redshirts, he will have a hard time winning the QB position in 2014. Someone will have too much experience. I don't really expect Heard to be the starter for 2 more years which is fine. He'll still have 3 to play. That's generally what you see in a healthy program.

^^^ You mean 2015, I think. Yes, he won't immediately be a starter because either Ash or Swoops/Max/Bram who finishes 2014 will have a leg up. But that is only at the beginning. Not big deal. If he is topnotch, a few games into the red-shirt freshman season, he will be alternating with the starter and getting the starting job during the year, like VY did.

But then again, while I say that it is just not worth it to have a true freshman start, Charlie and Watson have done that at Louisville out of necessity. They sent in Bridgewater for the 4th game of his true freshman season to start. And he lost to Marshall when they scored just 7 points (!). He lost his first 3 games. He went 5-2 in the next 7, for a 5-5 record as a starter. They went 23-3 after that. I don't think Charlie would any longer risk picking up a minimum 4 or 5 losses, trying to get a true freshman QB going. You can't take such a risk at Texas.

Really like Wittek to land to give us another option. He would have a legit shot to win the starting nod.

Some more stuff from Max Wittek today... About running into Vince Young the other day at a supermarket! ---The Link (Warning: Article by Chip Brown!).

Hell, I live in SoCal too... A couple of miles from where Max Wittek was born. Why don't I run into *anybody* except old ladies selling cheese on a stick at my supermarket, let alone VY. Damn!

Anyway, he speaks of the QB reputation of Petrino (UL) and Chow (UH) in this article. But he had already said great stuff about CS/Watson and Bridgewater in that earlier article in SB nation -The Link

^^ Ah, I see. I don't follow California HS football much, but may be I will do that now, as we see seem to be looking at California after a long time (since the Mackovic days when we looked at CA last).
They have been holding CA championships lately. This year's CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) "open division" championship was between the 4-time (2009-12) defending Champs, you guessed it, De La Salle (Concord, NorCal) and St. John Bosco (Bellflower, SoCal). And St. John Bosco, led by national top-3 pro style QB prospect Josh Rosen
, upset De La salle 20-14. Josh threw 12/17 for 200 yards and 2 TDs in the win.

And of course, Josh Rosen is on record, about 3 weeks back after Charlie/Watson got here, that he might make a couple of visits outside of west coast. "Michigan, and I don't know, may be Texas". Not sure if it would happen, but it would be a big catch if we can get him to visit. UCLA seems to have a pretty big lead on him now though.

EDIT: I just found this video from just 2 days back (Feb 6) when Josh Rosen again said the same words "Michigan and possibly Texas" to ESPN, after saying that the schools(s) he really likes are in SoCal. -The Link ... I thought that his earlier statement was not that serious. seeing him repeat it this week, I guess he really might visit at least. Major was recruiting him earlier, and hopefully Robinson has been continuing that.
