Florida State ??

Okay, FSU is a high scoring team, ninth in Division with an average of 82.3 ppg. Neither team is that dependent on the 3pt shot, with FSU making 5.5 of 14.7 attempts per game. That’s 22.7% of their shot attempts. Texas makes 4.0 3s pts per game on 11.4 attempts. That’s 17.5% of their shot attempts coming from BTA. Whereas Brooke (55-126; 43.7%) is the Horns’ primary 3pt threat with Ariel ( 20-54; 37.0%) as the secondary threat, FSU depends on Imani Wright (53-121; 43.8%) as their primary 3pt shooter with Leticia Romero (40-72; 55.6%) and Brittany Brown (19-56; 33.9%) providing support.

Shakayla Thomas, a 5-11 Jr. F, is the Seminoles’ leading scorer at 14.8 ppg. She has yet to take a 3pter this season. She is the second tallest starter for FSU and could end up matching up Joyner. Romero (12.7 ppg), Wright (11.2 ppg) and Ivey Slaughter (10.1 ppg) make up the quartet of FSU players averaging in double digits. Brown (9.2 ppg) and Chatrice White (9.2 ppg) are the other main scorers for FSU. Romero is a 5-8 Sr. G. Wright is a 5-9 Jr. G and Slaughter is a 6-1 Sr. F. These three along with Thomas and the 5-8 Sr. G Brown make up FSU’s starting lineup. Horns will remember both Romero, who played her freshman year at Kansas State and Wright, who was a starter at Baylor her sophomore year. Horn fans may recall that we were wondering if White would land here at Austin when she decided to leave Illinois after her sophomore year.

Kelsey and Audrey will have to contend with Slaughter and White. Foul trouble could dictate how long the Joyner-Thomas matchup lasts. It could be bad news for one of the teams. Or we fans could be treated to an outstanding matchup all game long. Horns will have the definite height advantage. FSU does have Kai James, a 6-5 Sr. post they can put on the court although she does not seem to fit their running game, playing only 19 games with an average of under 8 mpg. Brown has the most steals (64) and assists (127). I am guessing that she is the PG although I would think that would be Romero. The backcourt matchups are going to be fun to watch. Both teams are deep, going at least 10 deep. FSU does have ten players that average in double digit minutes. Horns match that and have Khaléann that would give them 11 players with double digit minutes if she were cleared to play.

This should be a fun game to watch. Both teams are going to run. Both average 65 shots a game. Shots inside the arc are the strength of both teams. I have to wonder how Thomas plays: around the rim or able to hit the midrange shot as well? Does she handle the ball well? She is averaging less than one assist a game so she doesn’t set up her teammates that much. But she is their primary shooter, having taken over 50 shots more than the next closest teammate. Horns obviously have a variety of players that they can throw at her. The problem for FSU, as for most of the Horns’ opponent, is whether they can slow down Joyner if she does not get in foul trouble.
We need Joyner homes to turn on BeastMode and take over.

Nice story about Brooke.
Kinda amazing how the main writers are discovering the women's team as they keep on winning. I don't remember neither Bohls nor Golden spending time on the women's team before. Wonder what they did with Rick Cantu? Wonder if he got to go to Florida to cover the FSU game? http://www.hookem.com/columns/golden-texas-guard-mccarty-small-big-game/
And this is what I like about this team: respect your foes but don't fear them.
Thanks for posting.

you know, so many people are questioning why Texas is playing FSU during conference play.

I just don't hear that talk about the South Carolina-UConn game which is also during their conference season. Just what a great matchup it is.

Wish they were talking about our game the same way cuz I think it is a great matchup between two of the best teams in the nation.

My guess is that the distance and timing don't create the same manner of issues on trying to rehab after a Saturday afternoon game. They are in the same time zone AND SC last played on the 9th, so there isn't the loss of an hour like Texas contends with for the time zone changing mid-flight, and on a turnaround game, every hour can be critical. Trying to actually be students and having to do classwork can ALSO be tough with this sort of a turnaround schedule and the travel involved...

Not sure if SC flew up a day early or if they waited and flew this morning...

The reason coach Aston is playing this game is because she promised Ariel when she was recruiting her that they would play in these big Monday games.

I hope there will be some good, non-biased announcers for this game. I'm getting tired of muting the sound. Doris Burke is okay but I bet she will be in Storrs.

Although I certinly think we have the team to win a game against FSU on any given night, just as with other top teams you can't really predict those nights. I just hope we play well and compete hard and let the chips fall where they may. The way I see it, going strictly by the rankings we're not "supposed" to beat FSU -- especially on their home floor. That said, we've nothing really to lose and everything to gain. Either we get another solid road win, or a loss sends us back to Austin with a good teaching tool to prepare for the remainder of the regular season and into the NCAA tournament.

We are not playing well ....yet. We are just hurting our selfs. 32 pts is not bad defense...poor offense

Well, back down to earth after Baylor. Except for Brooke, these players look like they've never seen a basketball before. Disappointing.

well, I think most nights we would beat FSU. Tonight, not sure. We are not playing like we used to seeing. 13 errors so far at the half and at least half of those, probably more, just poor play, judgement by the Horns.

not really playing our usual D either. We have lost FSU's 3pt shooters quite a bit and they have taken advantage of it to make 5-10 treys.

FSU has taken 14 more shots than the Horns. Definitely not our half. Let's see if we come out with a bit of fire in the second half and get the rest of the team to join Brooke in playing the game.

We have our own issues, but the refs are whistle happy. Yet, I keep seeing so many over-the-backs on rebounds by FSU that are not being called; and, our guards are getting bumped a lot on the perimeter, and they aren't calling those either.

Strangely, the refs have called no illegal screens/picks against either team; that's one of the most common calls refs make these days.

On the bright side, Brooke has been sensational; but, just not getting any help. We need Ariel to start hitting some outside shots, and Joyner needs to establish position down low and get a couple of layups to help her get in the groove of the game offensively.

Guess I will be grateful that Joyner is not in foul trouble as this is the type of game where she easily could be.

We did not take advantage of two of FSU's starters getting two fouls in the first quarter, and then Romero picking up her third foul in the second quarter.

This half of basketball really exposes our lack of perimeter shooters. The only player who can step it up in that category is gonna have to be Ariel.

dang, really getting tired of all the UConn hoopla. It is really a big thing they are on the verge of, but I am much more interested in our game. Don't need the announcers talking about UConn while the action is going on. At least wait until there is a break in the action.

yep, those no calls were quite noticeable. Guess that's one way to outrebound your opponents.

I never expected Texas to come out the gate like this. For a Big Time Game's.
You got to have some Energy, and be ready to play every time you hit the floor.
Just not a great 1st half.Hopefully I will see the Texas, that played Baylor last week.
