Flagrant Foul?

NBA Rulebook:

Section IV--Flagrant Foul

a. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpreted to be unnecessary, a flagrant foul--penalty (1) will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team.

PENALTY: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt his free throws, the opposing coach will select any player from the bench to attempt the free throws. (3) This substitute may not be replaced until the ball is legally touched by a player on the court. (EXCEPTION: Rule 3--Section V--e.) (4) The injured player may not return to the game. (5) A player will be ejected if he commits two flagrant fouls in the same game.
b. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpret-ed to be unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul--penalty (2) will be assessed. A personal foul is charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team.

PENALTY: (1) Two free throws shall be attempted and the ball awarded to the offended team on either side of the court at the free throw line extended. (2) If the offended player is injured and unable to attempt his free throws, his coach will select a substitute and any player from the team is eligible to attempt the free throws. (3) This substitute may not be replaced until the ball is legally touched by a player on the court. EXCEPTION: Rule 3--Section V--e. (4) The injured player may return to the game at any time after the free throws are attempted. (5) This is an unsports-manlike act and the offender is ejected.
c. A flagrant foul may be assessed whether the ball is dead or alive.

Now maybe you'd like to decide. Nowhere in the rulebook does it say you have to make a play for the ball.

Did it look bad? Yes.
Do I think Rondo meant to slap Miller in the face? no.

Obviously flagrant. Rondo's hand never gets within four feet of the ball and he takes Miller down by the neck.

That absolutely is dirty play so you are condoning it. Rondo couldn't get within 4 feet of the ball so he hit Miller. Rondo wouldn't risk pushing him or trying to hold him because Miller would have probably still scored. Plus either of those moves would have been called intentional.

Nope, zero...just like Brad Miller. And because getting fouled hard usually has nothing to do with getting hit in the teeth.

A hit to the head is usually a flagrant foul. And look at the chicken **** move rondo pulled on hinrich last night. He is a dirty little ***** and should be watching game seven in a suit and tie on the bench. The NBA is a complete joke when it comes to officiating.

I thought the foul against Miller should have been called flagrant or intentional, but it was just enough in the gray area that the NBA was in a pretty tough spot in having to change the official's call. That is, I didn't agree with the ruling, but there wasn't enough to make me think there wasn't an argument for the ruling that was given.

I also thought the NBA should have made Rondo sit for game 6 just on the principle that they don't let anyone take a swing at someone else's head because they want to prevent 1) injuries from head shots, and 2) ugly retaliation incidents. But they could have felt it wasn't bad enough to warrant overruling the refs.

However, I do think the NBA has to look at slinging another player into the scorer's table as unnecessary AND excessive. Rondo should miss game 7 whether he threw an elbow or not. Otherwise, what recourse do the Bulls have except trying to turn Rondo into a grease spot on the court?

There's always the person who wants to blame the guy thrown into the scorer's table, isn't there?
The Link

Rondo is a *****. Someone needs to knock him out for a season so he can think about it.

He threw out a leg and tripped him earlier in the series, pops big white guy in mouth, and then throws an elbow in that pic, but still not suspension. stern knows what he's doing.

GoHornsGo, The dude got jacked in the face/mouth/eye......at BEST its borderline flagrant and I lean towards flagrant.

You sound like the type of guy that thinks its "weak" to call a foul in a pickup game. I hate that and think it is ruining the game of basketball and just turns basketball into football on a hard court with no protection. And i definately don't see how them being Pros has anything to do with how well they should take a foul. Last time I checked those guys are humans and have just as frail a body as we do.

No, I don't believe that at all Cadet, but I'm also definitely not the guy who wants to ***** and throw a fit and posture every time I get whacked (not that Brad Miller is at all either). I just like to play the game and if it gets dirty, well it gets dirty. Nothing to start a thread about...

But yes, I do agree that Rondo is a relatively dirty player.
