The band that comes to mind off hand is The Flametrick Subs when accompanied by the Satan's Cheerleaders. They play power rock-a-billy meets Satan at the mexican border roadhouse. These mofo's play the hell out of their instruments, put on a great show and have great lyrics/songs.

They do a great Heart of Texas and a neat one on beer-runs.

They play midnight every Saturday at the Black Cat on Sixth. If you are a friend from out of town visiting me over the weekend, you can bet that you will be watching the Subs on Saturday. The drawback is that there is no GT at the Black Cat (If you have to ask about GT, save yourself and don't)

though it is debatable whether they are "austin" i enjoy the gourds, who spend a good amount of time in town.

for a rocker with a classic rock resume second to none, Ian McLagan and his Bump Band are pretty damn good, though they play fewer and fewer shows each year. (they can usually be found @ the Saxon Pub)

reckless kelly (again probably not austin, but they spend a fair amt of time here) is a whole lot of fun. especially their cover of "You shook me all night long".

Cross Canadian Ragweed (started in stillwater, but found Texas and Austin) as quick as they could. Play Lucy's all of the time.

James Hyland's Sunday shows at MOMO's also kick ***.

Excellent contributions, fellas. The reason I posted this is because there is no way that any of us can have the lowdown on the entire scene. This way we can find something we may have been missing, something a bit off of the beaten path. Plus, when Horns come to town for something and have been away for awhile, it gives them a heads up...also for visiting fans wanting something memorable to do...thanks for the posts.

Whatever happened to Morningwood? Those chickies were fun to watch and listen to.

Pretty sure The Gourds are an Austin band. They are great. So are the Damnations TX. If you have never seen them go check them out. Kind of a Gourds-type sound. The banjo/guitar player is brothers with one of the guys in The Gourds. They have been playing every Thursday night in January at Stubb's. Think they may be playing the Continental Club next month.

The Derailers at the Broken Spoke is great.

Also, go see Rusty Weir every Thursday at Saxon Pub--it's a great time!

Used to go see Soul Hat twice a week, but I haven't seen them in years-- are they still great live?

Vallejo and sister 7 were my favorite hard rock bands

There was a black guy who used to sing, play guitar and always had a sax player at Pearls Oyster Bar. I started going there in 88 (when I was 18) and had moved out to far west, and stopped in 95 when I moved to NYC. He played blues and rock. I have seen this guy a million times and I can't remember his name.

Vallejo. ummm...no.

Choking Ahogo. admittedly, a plug for a personal friend of mine, but they are very unique and they rock.

plenty - Lee Person's had 1985-1990 AC Green hair.. Like Daryll from "coming to america".... And played SRV, Jimi, and classic blues. W.C. Clarke is about 120 years old.... Maybe older.

If you have never heard him, you have to go see Monte Montgomery. He is without a doubt the most talented musician you may ever see live. Robert Earl called him the greatest acoustic guitar player he has seen.

Monte Montgomery is excellent live.

Steamroller put on some great live shows. However,
they recently stopped playing as Steamroller, they are now a punk band that kind of reminds me a little of the Rentals. Their reincarnated name is The Quitters.

My fave Austin musicians are:
Ian Moore....Omar and the Howlers...Monte Montgomery...Doyle Bramhall 2...Chris Duarte and Jake Andrews. I have to say though that if you havent seen Monte live then you are missing something. The dude is a guitar wizard..check him out next time he plays at Antones.

I too lament the death of Sister 7. What a show ... on a related note, Patrice Pike and tbe Black Box Rebellion play locally quite frequently. Patrice is the lead singer, and Wayne Sutton was the guitar player from S7.

Similar musical styles can be found in Flat Six. Check them out atThe Link Shameless plug, as I'm friends with the band, but they're really good. In fact, they play this saturday night at Nasty's, on Guadalupe.

Cruiserweight also rocks. I think they claim to be punk-pop - sort of a Green Day style. Just real upbeat with fantastic lyrics. They play SXSW, and then are touring for a while. Check them out atThe Link I don't know a soul in this band - this is a purely musical recommendation.

Monte Montgomery puts on an awesome live show.
Sister 7 concerts were good. But women with more body hair than I do scare me.
