Fav-re retires

You have a very selective memory about the recent playoffs. The obvious stinkers were Min in 04, Atl and the Stl debacle. But he looked good this year - with the exception of the final pick, I thought he played well against the Giants, and great against Seattle. 2003, great game against Seattle and solid against Philly - they would have won that game if not for the defense giving up that ridiculous 4th down conversion. 2001, a great game against the 49ers.

Selective memory. OK, let's go game by game.

2007-08 Great game against Seattle, even if for only 183 yards in the air, sure. But to say he played well against the Giants? If you eliminate the 90 TD to Driver caused by the Giant corner wrestling Driver at the line and then losing him and no one coming to pick him up, Favre threw for 146 in 34 attempts. Second half and OT he was 9-17 for 73 yards and 2 picks. Yeah, he was facing pressure from the Giant D line, but the Packers sure picked up the blitz on that last pick which was underthrown to a guy who had the DB all over him. Exactly the sort of thing you would expect a 17 year vet to be smart enough not to do. Except Favre who has done that stuff his whole career. The Giant game wasn't all Favre's fault, of course, but other than the one pass to Driver, he stunk. The Packers made what, 2 first downs in the second half, with one by penalty?

04-05 Thanks for conceding the point on the Viking game. I'll move on.

03-04 Again, I'll spot you a very good game against the Seahawks. Let's look at the Philadelphia game. 'After the first quarter, you know what Favre did the rest of the game? How about 9-19 for 80 yards and the OT pick, which pass has been described by such terms as "Favre at his reckless worst'" (USA Today), "a bad throw, even for a gambler like Favre" (NY Times), and "Brett Favre threw away Green Bay's chance at another Super Bowl" (AP) and was such a ridiculous throw under pressure (just the sort of thing Favre was infamous for--aaahhh! here comes a lineman--I'd better just chuck it downfield) that Favre didn't even face reporters after the game.

02-03 The Falcon fiasco. I don't necessarily blame him for the loss, since the Packers managed all of 56 yards rushing, but 20-42 for 247 and 2 INT? At home against a wild card team?

01-02 Sorry if I overlooked a good game against SF leading to the 6 INT debacle against the Rams. SIX interceptions. It staggers the imagination.

98-99 Favre led the Packers on a 4th quarter drive to take the lead before the T.O. catch to win the game for the 49ers. That was a great drive. Too bad he chucked two horrible interceptions in the second half to help the Packers blow a 17-10 lead. One of the interceptions was on a typical "he's going to chuck it no matter how his feet are planted and no matter how much he's throwing the ball across his body" throw and the other on a 3rd and 21 heave to a linebacker. OK, the refs blew the game by saying Rice was down before he fumbled, even the SF papers admit that, but Favre's 2 INT in the second half prevent it from being a great game for him.

98 Super Bowl. 4th quarter. Tied. Packers with the ball near midfield. Favre misses a wide !$%!#@!$%* open Freeman. By a $%&^$^*%#@! mile. Five, ten, forty years from now, he'll probably tell you that was the worst throw of his whole career.

There you go. The last 10 Packer playoff games. Favre had great games against Seattle twice in divisional or wild card games. He had a great game against the 49ers in the wild card playoff in 2002. That's 3 excellent games.

He had unmitigated disasters against Minnesota in 2004 and the Rams in 2002.

He had really lousy games against the Giants this year and the Eagles in '04 and the Falcons in '03.

He was off and on in the 98 Super Bowl and the '99 loss to the 49ers.

Three good/great games, two of the worst playoff performances ever by anybody, three other dog games, and 2 up and down games with notable fuckups.

I'd say that's a pretty crappy playoff record for the last ten years, wouldn't you?
