I have a feeling that I have missed this thread, but I can’t find it so here goes.

On Baxter, here was some feedback I sought and received from one of the orthopedic specialists we see here in SoCal. He consults with TCU.:

“PCL not nearly as important from a functional stability standpoint. Can usually play with a brace after pain improves.

LCL not as important at MCL, but potentially tricky on the lateral side due to IT Band, Hamstring, Meniscus issues possibly.

Brace and rehab will hopefully be enough.”

I’m not a doctor nor do I have any sense of the severity of the injury. However, based on what I’m reading and the input above, I’m wondering if Baxter could play with injury and be productive. There must be something missing that has not been disclosed, or that I have missed.

I decided to go down the Nik Sanders rabbit hole this week and I feel like if we make some decisions quickly, he could be our Roschon Johnson for the foreseeable future. He has that baseball catcher mind already, so he knows all the variables of any given situation.

I don't trust either Gibson or Clark yet. Blue seems to be better on the edges and not just taking 15-20 carries. Wisner needs to be more of our Keilan Robinson or DJ Monroe or Daje Johnson or whatever jet sweep guy you'd like to compare him to. I think the best answer for a heady guy who can find a hole and use his strength (didn't really help him much on the diamond this year) would be Sanders.

I think you're selling Wisner short.
I predict he will be a welcome surprise.
Agreed MD. Dont sell Wisner short. He is up 24lb since signing with no loss of speed or quickness. He has been critical on kickoffs, but, for God’s sake, find someone else. I understand he would do whatever asked to get on the field. Nose tackle, no problem. We will miss CJ no question, but if our OL can live up to billing and give our quick backs a crease, we will have a very good running game. Biggest worry with Gipson and Clark is pass blocking. Nobody really knows because they havent been called on to do it in HS. If either picks that talent up quickly so much the better.

Apparently there was a lot of positive coaching chatter about Wisner before Baxter got hurt. It sounds like he is going to be a more than capable #2. The issue for now is that he got all of 12 touches last year so nobody in the public knows anything about him. It seems like we will probably be happily surprised.

Everyone has been raving about him since Spring ball. He was going to get a lot of touches regardless.

Watched the interview with Wisner on 3rd and Longhorn. He’s thicker than I thought. Should stand up well and all say he’s a baller.

We may be in better shape than some of us fear. I really like Baxter as an individual, but he underwhelmed me last year. He’s definitely bigger faster stronger now so this could’ve been a breakout year for him. Maybe 2025.

As SH knows, my grandson played football at IMG and he worked out with Jerrick Gibson. He describes Gibson as a beast.

Some notes from OTH on practice this morning.

– Tyanthony Smith is impressing. Says he will play this year.
– Leona Lafau also drew mention
– Defense was really impressive today. Every position group. Multiple TOs forced today.
– Juan Davis caught a TD pass. TE's had a good day. Helm, Davis and Niblack ran with first team. Washington had an outstanding catch.
– Blue, Clark, Wisner and Gibson all ran first team reps. Derron Gullete played RB on 2nd team.
– Makuba and McDonald both had INTs today.
– Defense is really bringing the pressure.

From OTH
NASCAR PACKAGE
Colin Simmons (SAM) and Anthony Hill at linebacker with Trey Moore and Ethan Burke at EDGE. Simmons and Moore are considered interchangeable in this positionally.

Dang. That's not good for Clark at RB or Niblett's prospects at WR.
Gullette made sense because what we lost was power running. Putting Niblett there is like putting Tony Jones there. I know he can run some Keilan type plays, but the defense will know he's not running up the middle and will shoot to the outside. He's not going to outrun the Georgia defense.

It may be because he's not making the 2 deep at WR, but I don't see how it helps. Just takes development off WR. Juan Davis is supposed to be looking good at H-back, maybe that's a better choice given 2 talented TE's and 2 with potential already.

Having torn my Achilles my heart goes out to Christain. It’s the worse..my calf is still shriveled. The recovery is tough because there is nerve damage. And it’s a difficult mental challenge.. it’s by far better to break your leg or tear any other tendon.

I wondered about this as well, but am assuming that is not a possibility. Bet he wishes he had stayed.
Sarkisian's policy is once you enter the portal your gone for good. Players don't get to change their mind and rejoin the team. I'm not in 100 percent agreement with that but certainly respect the logic of it.

I tore mine a few years ago as well and agree with you Gyl - that calf and overall lower leg strength has never returned all the way, even after pretty intensive and lengthy PT. The neuropathy still exists as well. All that after an incredibly successful surgery to repair with an outstanding surgeon.

That said, I'm an out of shape dude in my mid-50s, and he's a superior athlete in his late teens, so my hope and expectation is a full recovery with major success contributing for the Horns for years to come. :hookem:

D'onta Foreman recovered from achilles tear and continues to play in the NFL.

As did and does Kevin Durant - again, the difference between seasoned athlete (them) and out of shape middle-aged dude (me). I'm sure Clark will be fine and come back ready, willing and able to kill it on the field!

Put me in the same camp with you guys - although my Achilles didn't have a tear. I had a large bone spur on my heel, and it had broken into some chip which were embedded in the tendon. Surgeon had to disattach the tendon in order to remove the embedded chips, then reattach it. To this day I can't get my weight all the way over to my left side (a real drawback for a right-handed golfer!). But I'm 80 - so I guess it's as good as it's ever going to be.
