Ewers is Back, Baby!!!

I presumed it happened on one or both of his QB scrambles. The first one was near the sideline and the other in middle of the field.

That one where he tried to ram his way for the first down and had a really hard collision, he led with his left shoulder. It's not impossible that the collision could have propagated across his body and injured his right one instead, but that seems unlikely to me.

Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning came to Texas for a reason, they just get to show their stuff a year early. Next two at home will both be tough but Texas is capable and more than anything the brain farts and mental lapses that we have seen far too much of this season now have to get cleaned up because the margin for error will be next to zero.

Even though Sark has been reporting very good weeks of practice (which, more and more, I have tended not to completely believe), the injury situation in general and the QB position in particular will offer a window on what this team is really made of.

They shouldn’t lack focus. I’m optimistic.

He didn't hurt it on the scramble. Said he hurt it on a sack and explains all the check downs. Amazing he hit 14 in a row with it already hurt somewhere in there. Hopefully he's back by Iowa State and gets some reps in before OU assuming we get there. Honestly think we can lose 1 more and still make the CCG. Depends on who we would lose to and OU needs to beat anyone we'd be in contention with. Kansas St. is the one that worries me as they don't play OU. Least we get them at home.

KSU really did a number on the Toads.

But from week to week we see highly variable performances from the teams that will remain next year, at least when they are playing each other. We can assume they will save their A games for the week they play Texas.

God’s speed to QE on his recovery.
As someone who has watched Maalik, Arch, and Wright practice, I am giddy with excitement to see them unleash terror on BYU and beyond.

Regardless of which play did it, I hope they stress sliding in the future. I admire his willingness to lower the shoulder against that big dude, but you know, we don't need that from him.

And Sam Ehlinger
Just kidding but that guy could bring the pain on a DB once in a while

Right. He was thick. But still, you never know. Running backs have a high attrition rate for a reason even though they are much more experienced taking a blow than a QB.

By the time Quinn saw the defender it was too late to slide. He knew he would get hit about the time the slide started so his best option was to deliver a blow rather than receive 100% of it from another player.

It's irrelevant anyway because multiple people have reported he was injured during the sack earlier, not the scramble. He hit the defender with his left shoulder, not his right.

A few thoughts. First, if Ewers was hurt earlier, then Sark should have leaned on the running game with few, if any, rpo type looks and more direct hand-offs to Brooks and Baxter (who finally looked healthy). Brooks was money on more downhill runs especially off tackle with his cut back ability and Baxter showed quickness through the hole, especially on the td run. No excuses for Sark. Second, I have seen a number of comments on the web that Texas is in trouble with Murphy at qb based on his two passes in the game with the first just after coming off the bench cold. Mitchell was open, but the timing wasn't there. It may be a struggle or Murphy may take off after a week of work with the first team knowing he is the starter. One advantage this coming week is that BYU has no idea what Murphy's tendencies may be like they would have with Ewers. Third, the next two games and possibly more are all on the shoulders of the o-line (and the defense, but this thread is more offense related). Open holes and give Murphy some time especially early to give him confidence. The receivers need to help the young qb and fight to get open and fight for the ball in the air. Murphy will have to develop some touch and know when to put some air under the pass. He has a big arm and can throw it on a line 25-30 yards downfield. However, if you do that everyone between you and the receiver has a shot at the ball.

One of my friends hypothesized that if you Ewers doesn’t come back in two or three weeks, he may never again play for Texas, as many have speculated about Caleb Williams (shutting it down). I hope that’s not true because my observations aside, Ewers is a very good quarterback who has mostly played well for this team.

Of course, if Murphy or Manning play very well in his absence, a desirable conundrum will be created for Sark. We should be so lucky…

That could very well happen. And agree that would be a great problem to have. I love QE big time but just maybe another guy shows us something on a whole higher level.
I am not a big guy on change due to a corporate life full of it. But sometimes change gets lucky.

It's not just based on 2 passes. It's every time he played this season. He just hasn't looked good at all

I like the RPO ability he has, as you mentioned. If we have to retool the offense mid season, that's bad news ( o line coordination included, maybe Sabre or hornDE68 can correct me) but in this case we'll need to believe in sark putting together a game plan that fits his qb

Ewers running style was bound to get him banged up. Unlike Vince, ewers could not make people miss.
Quinn has good speed running straight ahead but simply is not shifty enough to avoid hits.

I’ve never seen Malik scramble. Maybe he has some moves that will allow him to avoid tacklers.I hope so. That would be a big asset to our offense. Plus, it would give Sark a great chance to add the QB option to our arsenal.

Sam was a fullback playing QB. He was built differently.
Maalik and Arch can both turn and burn, so hopefully the only part a defender will hit on them is turf dust. LOL
I didn't think Malik was that fast. He's huge but does he have decent top end speed. QE actually showed some good wheels this year like on the 29 yd TD he had.

It looks to me like, when Murphy gets in the game, he is over amped. His first pass is always a complete bullet, like he's hit a turbo button on his arm.

Hopefully, a week of practice as the starter, and knowing he is the starter going into the game will help settle him down. Sark can help with his play calling, too. Call a deep for his first pass, let him heave it into the seats if need be to get some of the yips out.

Oh, by the way.

I'm not a doctor, but a legit AC joint sprain in the throwing shoulder means to me that we won't see Ewers again this season before the CCG or bowl game.

We'll be riding on Maalik or Arch for the rest of our conference games.
