ESPN pays $2.25 Billion for SEC rights

I normally stir the pot for the sake of stirring the pot, but what about Texas makes the Big 12 a power conference? I honestly want to know where that attitude comes from?

I would love well reasoned responses that do not include a 400 page thesis on how awesome Vince Young was in 2005.

I'm more of an outsider looking in than a fan that knows all the in's and out's, but Texas won a Conference title in the mid 90's and a Conference title and NC in 2005, it's first in something like 30 or 35 years if I'm not mistaking.

From an outsider looking in, Texas isn't even the best year in and year out within their own division. I see Texas packing on 10 wins a season against what until last year would be considered a very weak conference (with exceptions of course) plus whatever happens in the Alamo, Cotton, or Holiday Bowl.

So, I'm not sure where the confusion is when it comes to why the Big 12 doesn't bring in big time TV contracts and I'm equally, if not more, confused as to why Texas believes it somehow is a crown jewel of achievement that gets an unfair shake?

Since football is where the money is, there's only three Big 12 programs worth a ****. Those are Texas, OU, and Nebraska. Believe it or not, OU moves the dial in NYC and in California. While not as much as Texas, they do have some pull. So does Nebraska.

It pisses me off to see the other 9 of the league start throwing their weight around when it comes to TV. They always seem to ***** about OU, Texas, etc. getting all the TV games. It's as if anyone gives a damn about an Iowa State/Colorado matchup.

What the SEC has going for it is a lot of strong programs. (I'm talking about TV ratings here.) It has it's top rated "national" programs but it has a strong block of regional ones like Auburn, Georgia, etc., that still get strong ratings.

Between the Big 12, the Big 10, the SEC, and the Pac-10, the Pac-10 has the worst TV deal by far and it's not even close. The Big 12 would be a close 3rd to the Big 10's second place but the SEC has by far and away the best deal.

I also second the amateur **** that goes down during ABC telecasts. I could list my complaints but I'd be here too long.

population density

Of course, this doesn't measure the intensity of a fan base, but if you plot out the locations of the Big 12 schools compared to SEC, Big 10, ACC, and PAC 10, it's not hard to figure out which BCS conference is most unevenly distributed.

And the few urban areas that do exist in the Big 12 North (Denver, Kansas City) aren't hotbeds of college football.

Texas should go independent. The University has been trying to form its own network and thus disconnect itself from The Big XII relating to revenue sharing of tv contracts. The Horns won't agree to go along with the Commissioner on tv deals period. That's why Kevin Weiberg quit - he was tired of the split between UT and pretty much all the rest.

UT wants to keep all dollars, and have no or littel revenue sharing with Big XII Conference members? It shoudl go independent at once - certainly NOT stay in the Conference. Wht hasn;t it?

And the Big Ten will pay Northwestern a bit more than the SEC pays Vanderbilt.

The numbers seem to work out that the Big Ten package will provide about $212 million a year vs. the SEC package at about $200 million a year.

The best part for Big Ten fans is that there are about 40 football games and more than 100 basketball games that we don't have to put up with ESPiN's *********.

Going Independent is poitically impossible in Texas. Go ahead and scratch that idea off the list.

The best realistic case is for the Big 12 to form its own television network ala Big Ten Network. You knew that in the end this was gonna be where things would go. The Big 10 had to sort of blaze the path to prove it was possible and you'll start to see other conferences take up this idea in the future.

It's pretty clear the train has left the station with the Big 12 still standing on the platform.

So, I'll say it: Us and A&M need to join the SEC, and sooner rather than later. ****** academics aside, that's about the only move that makes sense given the circumstances.

And just to make things symmetrical, schools like FSU and Louisville from the East ought to look at doing the same thing.

Every team in the Big XII should schedule every OOC game against an SEC opponent and kick their ***. Then the networks will have greater incentive to market/show the "best" conference then.

I have lurked and/or posted here for about two years and two things have always come across as constants among this boards posters:

1)Vince Young (insert anything here).

and

2)Texas fans, or at least those that frequent this site, never hesitate to scratch their head when SEC fans pull for each other in OOC games, pimp their league on other boards, or when LSU and Florida gather at midfield after a NC and chant "SEC, SEC, SEC". The same situation holds true for the previous two trips by Arkansas into Texas (2000 Cotton, 2003 Austin).

In regards to #2, it should start to become obvious now. ESPN is dishing out 12.5 mil per school, per year and then there are the millions CBS will be paying per year, per school. The SEC has alot to be proud of. While Texas is calling SEC fans retarded for taking pride in their conference, their primetime HD telecasts, and the additional revenue, the Big 12 is being broadcast on Spike somewhere between a paid advertisement for "The Miracle Sponge" and the latest Ronco invention.

But yeah, you should turn your noses or discuss going independent. God knows that "Vince Young" in 2005 or the one Conference title every 10 years warrants the respect you are not getting.

Point being, there is now a 3 page thread discussing the very thing SEC fans have been saying all along. The conference you play in and the success of everyone in it, does matter. Miss. St. is going to get paid and have amazing revenue just like LSU.

It is being discussed because many posters, maybe not you specifically, are tossing out the idea that maybe Texas should go independent or join the SEC......after it being stated time and time again on this board that Texas couldn't care less about the conference they play in. This line of thinking has been the crutch used to not have to deal with SEC fans that sing the praises of their conference.

So now, Texas is still the 2nd best team in their own division, on pace for another conference title in 2015, NC in 2040, and will have less television exposure and revenue sharing than SEC bottom dwellers.

If that doesn't matter to you, so be it.
