Errors

4 tonight. I've been saying all along that this problem will work itself out - always seems to. This is really starting to get out of hand though. Doesn't seem to matter who we throw out there, the problem remains.

Enough is enough.

Assuming no more in the next two innings, that makes 46 errors in 27 games. That's insane and would easily make this the worst defensive team of the last 7 years.
2007 - 58 in 63
2006 - 77 in 62
2005 - 62 in 72
2004 - 76 in 73
2003 - 109 in 70
2002 - 78 in 72

Is there not a kid on this team that can make a ******* throw from third to first?

I believe there were five unearned runs tonight. Very frustrating to watch. Not good baseball. Some good pitching performances wasted-they must be very frustrated.
Augie was none too happy on the post-game show-there must have been steam coming out of his ears, from the way he sounded. There will be a new third baseman for the next game, at the least, maybe a few more changes.

Thorp - Absoutely. Right now, that is really our biggest problem. I am actually beginning to feel fine with the pitching, and I think they could be really good later. Even the hitting, which we know we have a ton of talent and experience to do well, is not coming through when we need it, also because of all the errors and how that is affecting even the battes, who are put under serious pressure with no lead being safe and no amount of good pitching helping. The errors are really screwing with the players' heads.

This team really needs a few games where things start going right, and we stop making these errors. No question that it is a pretty talented lot, capable of becoming very very good.

Texas is not alone with this problem this season. For example, Rice has had tons of 5+ error games this season as well including the one at Reckling that Texas won. I think the commenters from last night hit it when they said that the new format has really reduced practice time.

Make it 51 errors in 29 games with 2 more today in the first game at OU. Again the batting and pitching held up for a 10-7 win, where 2 unearned runs were scored (and really at least three runs were avoidable but for the errors).

I hope this nightmare would end soon. If at all it does, we are a really formidable team with very good pitching depth (even if starters have been shaky here and there), and an excellent batting lineup. Kyle's bat is bound to wake up soon - and today's salami will help, I am sure.

Yeah, we are not alone in all this. My favorite other team, the Anteaters just made 2 errors and lost 12-5 yesterday against arch-rival CSU Fullerton, at home, with God Gorgen giving up a bunch of runs and all that (and we hate the CSUF coach

#5 UCI, normally a very solid defensive team, has been going at about 1.45 error per game, about a 45% increase from last year.

Then I decided to take a look at what the top-10 schools have been doing in the error department.

errors/game this year and last.

1. ARIZONA ST ......... 33/29 .. 53/64 .. +30%
2. MIAMI FL ............. 24/26 .. 81/61 .. -41%
3. FLORIDA ST ......... 53/29 .. 60/62 .. +86%
4. NORTH CAROLINA .. 33/29 .. 73/73 .. +14%
5. UC IRVINE ........... 33/23 .. 66/65 .. +42%
6. SOUTH CAROLINA .. 23/27 .. 65/66 .. -13%
7. MISSOURI ........... 29/28 .. 64/60 .. -3%
8. VANDERBILT ........ 34/26 .. 69/67 .. +27%
9. LONG BEACH ST ... 43/27 .. 69/62 .. +48%
10. NEBRASKA ......... 35/27 .. 79/59 .. -4%

That is an average 18% increase in error rate by the top 10 teams so far this year. Miami is the only team to make any significant improvement in errors. Some teams are really struggling. Look at FSU with numbers like ours.

May be there IS something to what some are saying about the change in schedule and its effect.

Garrido said in the post game interview that they knew why Torres was making so many errors and they were going to fix it in practice tommorrow. I sure as hell hope he's right.

The running count now goes to 54 errors in 32 games now.

The funny thing is that we have only 10 errors in 12 conference games, but have 44 in the other 20 games. What causes thet? Lack of focus? .... Strange.

I think focus has everything to do with it. Texas is at a point where they know they can't afford to lose a conference series and really need to start sweeping here and there if they want to host a regional, so they suddenly start to care a lot more about the conference games.

I'm not saying the players don't want to play these midweek games, but I don't think they take it seriously at all, and if Augie wants to change it, he's going to have to start benching guys. Not just moving them to a different position on the field but putting their asses on the bench and letting them think about it for a game or two.

It all starts with moving Travis Tucker from second to third. He is not a third baseman but is a terrific second baseman. He does not know how to play the hops at third which can really be different from second. I hope Augie is right and knows what Torres is dong wrong. Of course, the predicament Augie is in is Torres is really one of the most consisten hitters on the team right now so they need him in the line up.

Exactly. Offense is what is saving Torres right now. That's why other players have benched and he's been in left or at DH.

Augie was saying during the pregame show last night that Preston Clark's shoulder still is not ready for him to be the full-time catcher, which is why they tried him out at first last night.

I'd put Tucker at second, and let Torres DH. Surely there is an uninjured player somewhere on the team who can play third base. And taking Belt out of the lineup should not be an option until Kyle Russell comes around, maybe not even then. Rupp is also too good a hitter to not have in there somewhere, even when Clark is catching.

Tucker is having a Nick Peoples 2006-esque year in the field. Struggled with the early-season position change and he's let it go to his head no matter where he plays (and maybe at the plate as well).

Torres has been just flat awful in the field. I don't think there's any way around that. Strange, because when he came in, I figured he'd be one of those good field/no hit guys. He's the opposite. He hits for some (emphasis on some) power, has great at bats/discipline, gets the bunts down, and has good speed. His bat is way too valuable to take out of the lineup.
