Eric Metcalf Record

On MNF, they mentioned Eric Metcalf's punt return record that Devin Hester tied tonight at 10.
I ran a search on the record and found Eric Metcalf's Heisman promotion video. Doesn't exactly get you pumped. Wikipedia made a note that it might have even cost him the award.

Metcalf Heisman Promo

Eric Metcalf is probably still my favorite Texas player, for the pure excitement he used to give me every time he touched the ball. I thought I would never see anybody more exciting - till I saw Vince Young later, who tied him in excitement for me.

Having said that, the promotional video and the really bad PR work all along in 1988 by UT had nothing to do with his not getting the Heisman. You can say that somewhere along that wretched year of losses for us, Bellmont might even have decided not to waste money on it. There was no way EM would win it that year. The Heisman went to some dude named Barry Sanders !! (That dude is the only guy I have ever seen with more elusive moves than even Eric Metcalf)!

There are no words for me to tell you how much I'd like to thank you for posting this, so I'll just say, "you've got the touch".

Tough to win a Heisman on a 4-7 team. Metcalf was all everything those years, our whole offense was Metcalf right, Metcalf left, Metcalf up the middle and then punt and hope defense got a stop so Metcalf could return the punt.

still one of my favorite players too...

I'll never forget my freshman year in '88 when I walked past him on my way to class in front of Gregory...I was in awe

He was also a fantabulous athlete. There was a time, around 1989 when something like 7 of the closest long jumps to Bob Beamon's amazing Mexico City 1964 record were by two guys, if I am not mistaken. some 4 or 5 by Carl Lewis and a couple by Eric Metcalf. He did not pursue long jump beyond the NCAA meets (again, IIRC) or he would have even been a medal contendor at the Barcelona Olympics in track/field. His sprint speed was also tremendous, of course.

I remember a comparison side-by-side video they showed on TV once during one of Eric's college games. Comparing his high knee-kick running style to his dad Terry Metcalf's from old NFL. Amazing similarity. One rarely sees a runner whose legs kicks are as distinctive and graceful as Eric's was.

The video itself is not so bad, but the song? Thats a deal killer. No love songs as he's slo-mo celebrating with a teammate.

This thread is worthless without pics...

I remember 1987 like it was yesterday, man Metcalf, Jones, Cash twins, Norris, Champagne, Jetton and then on defense Hackamack, Hager, Hagey, Sheriff.....those guys created my obsession for Longhorn football.

We should have beaten AM that year and gone to the Cotton Bowl, errrrrr! Dam you Bucky Richardson!!!!!! I think Hager made every tackle.

One of the best athletes ever to grace DKR. Olympic-level track athlete, great player on the gridiron. Exciting to watch in all his endeavors. Also was a quiet and humble gupy.

I would love to have seen Metcalf and Charles in a 40 meter foot race. Both had grace and speed while at UT. Thanks for the video. And, what? Y'all don't like Alabama?
