Elite 8 Texas vs NC State

Great season! I'm extremely proud of what Vic, his staff, and these players have accomplished. I sometimes wonder if people ACTUALLY realize how big our deficiencies were, yet the team was able to overcome them by playing their guts out and buying in to the game plans.

I loved watching this team, but I'm definitely looking forward to next season. Let's see if we have better luck with the portal this time around.

Tough loss. Several areas of weakness that we've seen a few times in the season reared their heads today. It is tough to keep up when one of your starters who typically plays all 40 minutes struggles to score a single point.

- Was surprised we were taking such quick shots in the first half; that really allowed NC State to play at a faster pace after our missed shots and get into their transition offense which we had trouble defending

- Vic seemed more liberal in rotating his post players; was really surprised he didn't give Taylor more minutes early in the second half when Baldwin was pretty much having her way with DeYona

- Booker only got to the free throw line once and it was late in the game. That has to be a season low. Neither Shay nor Shaylee got to the free throw line. We lost the FT battle by a ton.

- Booker wasn't her normal confident self this weekend. And, she just wasn't being as aggressive with her jump shot as she has been most games. That's unfortunate, but it does happen to even some of the best freshmen in different sports come the post-season.

- We've discussed our lack of 3-point shooting a lot this season. NCSU was 9-18 and we were 1-6 (Maul mad hers). That's a difference of 8 points. Maybe that stat doesn't matter if we had made some more of our close-range shots; but when you are trying to come back late in the game, lack of 3-point shooting makes it much more difficult.

- Team fought hard to cut the 18 point lead down 10 points half; had several chances to cut into it more in the third, but still ended up being a 9 point lead. After getting it down to 6 points, letting James shoot another 3-pointer was the biggest back breaker.

Sorry but Matharu wasn't that. She was a spot up 3 point shooter. Run her off that and she had nothing. Stanford neutralized her when they eliminated us.
Totally disagree, she could also create her own shot. Not to mention, she was athletic and able to play the aggressive man to man that Vic likes. You don't score 30 plus points in a game being just a spot up shooter. I think @moooo would agree.

Well........POOP EMOJI.

Alright, let's make sure Rori's knee heals well and let me start deep diving (ha-ha, I know nothing) on the two superstars joining the team next year.

It was great fun watching this team pick themselves up, dust themselves off and decide to carry on after losing Rori. And what a great run it was. Good luck to Hadi and Shaylee. We will certainly miss you. Thank you, ladies, for all your “Texas Fight”!!

I agree on her defense. Er She may have been our best open defender.
But staying firm on her offensive game. Stanford ran her off her spot and she never attempted to create her own shot.

We'll agree to disagree, but they desperately need an athletic 2 guard that can create their own shot and is athletic enough to play the way that Vic wants to play defense. That's what they need from the portal.

And a tough 5 to compliment A-Mo.

Didn't really explain that well. What I was thinking in my head was that our offense is built on being efficient in the paint. So, by us not taking (and making) eight 2-point shots instead of us attempting (and possibly) making eight 3-point shots, that was an 8-point differential on maximizing scoring output.

So, it was really a 27 to 3 point difference in points scored beyond the arc. Not sure you win this type of game unless you are really efficient from 2-point land, and we weren't as our mid-range game wasn't there today. We're not gonna make every bunny; but, the mid-range game is something we usually win.

We need a FIVE...
The thing is, we have three true Centers on the roster (and most likely all on scholarship). Numbers-wise, that's average to above average. If Vic doesn't expect Boutilier and Herron to be suitable backups to Jones next season, then that's where a decision needs to be made on how to address the lack of quality depth at the Center position, especially considering Jones only has one season of eligibility remaining.

Solely thinking about Jones leaving after one more season, I then have to agree with you that we need another (backup) Center for the upcoming season who will end up being the starter in 2025-26.

Jones' propensity for injury and missing stretches of games makes this need even more critical IMO.

I know this belongs in Recruiting '25 but can we take our time and hurry up and close the deal on Aaliyah Chavez! I do not want her leaving the state. We must continue to win the State of Texas. :bevo:

Great season. It has been a lot of pleasure watching this team do so much. The biggest factor of all today, IMO, was Maddie being off her shot, which we have relied on so much. She has been superhuman all year. Shaylee not hitting was not as central. In retrospect, it would have been nice to try the zone sooner (but kudos to Vic for using it at all.). I would like to have seen Taylor playing for more of the game. She did great the few minutes she was in. Water under the bridge. It was a great run. It sounds like there is a lot to be happy about for next year.

So we want to add 2 players ?
With the 3 frosh coming in don't we have a full roster ?
Who is going to portal out? Jack, Herron,, Codio, Maul ?
I'd like to see Maul stay, but the others can go, along with Graves and Boutillier. Too many non-contributors in my book.

He always does, but Vic Schaefer did an incredible job at the postgame press conference. He truly is what is right with the women’s college basketball game and there’s no doubt how much he cares about this game.

You’ll never see an exspose in a national publication about him unless it’s about his accomplishments, hardworking, dedication, care and professionalism in the women’s college basketball game. I say that with confidence knowing the kind of man and coach that he is. I will not look forward to him retiring from this game someday and especially at the University of Texas. I hope it will be a happy one for him, but it will be a sad one for me personally.

Not to mention that we already have exactly that on our roster - a young lady who came in as a forward and was pressed in to duty as our point guard. Seemed to me she created her own shot extremely well, and that she might just become a fabulous oversized 2 guard instead of a 3 or stretch 4. We shall see how it all plays out, and I can't wait.

Trust me, Jordan Lee is coming in next year and she will play MAJOR minutes at the 2 guard... could very well be a starter. I expect Preston to play a lot also. There's not enough video out there for me to fully evaluate her game, but she has gotten high praise from Vic. He's compared her to Rori so...

Agreed. Vic was incredible in the post-game presser, as were the players. His sincerity, love of the game, love of the kids, genuineness as a person all came through so strong. The players were great, too, just expressing their feelings. It was so moving for Shay to talk about the bond she has with Shaylee. You get such a sense of the closeness of the team.
