Wife and I went to a specialty vacuum store over the weekend to look at various models. The owner stocks numerous models (including Dyson) and is an authorized repair center for many others.
He showed us how Dyson and others(especially Hoover) cut corners. Dyson is made of cheap plastic in critical spots and is prone to failure. He showed us one brought in that had cracked. It does have great suction at the beginning, but the bagless design inevitably leads to great loss of efficiency.
We ended up with a Riccar. It was expensive, but had metal instead of plastic in the key components, and was much better than the Dyson at handling both flooring and carpet.
