The story I recall hearing about Augie's hiring is that he called Gus to get his blessing after either being contacted or interviewed.

One of the few good calls I can lay claim to is MB for head coach. I remember telling an Aggie friend of mine that I was actually hoping that ANM would beat Texas that one time. I didn't want Mackovic to pull a win out of his *** and save his job (I know, I know... he was already fired). After that game, my Aggie friend asked who I wanted Texas to hire, and I told him Mack Brown.

I admit that, at the time, I didn't know Mack was a clapper.

Regardless of who was responsible for Mack Brown - and regardless of what people think of him now - we should all utter some thank-yous and emit some sighs of relief that we didn't end up with Barnett instead.

I think Jimmy Johnson goes on that list as well.

I thought of him too but I don't think he was fired. Who knows what exactly happened behind close doors but at least officially, he and Jerry Jones mutually agreed to part ways and Jimmy voluntarily stepped down.

No. The Chiefs lost their final game of the year, and Mackovic was fired immediately thereafter. Then, against long odds, there was an extraordinary turn of events that resulted in the Chiefs making the playoffs as a Wildcard.
