Dump Dodds and Flush the John

I was cleaning out some old boxes from 97/98 and came across this flyer that someone was passing out at the 66-3 UCLA game. Remember this?

Edit: Ok. I obviously realize this wasn't during the UCLA game. Sometime during Mackovic's last seaon!

Amazing they were passing those out at the UCLA game and already had the score and record 8 games in on that thing.

I remember the "Fire Fred" plane flying over the Bluebonnet Bowl. The reality hit me at that time that some of my fellow Longhorns really suck. It was difficult singing The Eyes that day. I'm glad those days are gone.

My father and some friends were responsible for the "Fire Fred" plane. I've still got the old newspaper clippings and pictures. It even made the USA Today. Good times. Well, not really.

wait, you mean the natives were restless after the "tear down the goalposts" campaign of 1997?

i'm shocked!

Although its kinda interesting that Dodds was just as much on the perceived hot seat.

I dont remember that, that was my first year out of school and the only game I went to that year was the ou game (which we won). I was almost positive that Mackovic was going to be gone at the end of the year.

although that was right around the very end of the "grass roots" types of campaigns and just before the internet, and fan boards like this one really took off. I know the 360 board was around in '96, but I never really logged onto that.

I think the plane pulling the "Dump DeLoss and flush the John" banner was during the Colorado game that year...

We had the banner flown over the Rice game in Houston first. It was a local pilot, out of Katy. My business partner came up with "Dump DeLoss and Flush the John." We decided to fly it over the Colorado game after the road-trip to Missouri. That loss was so damned frustrating, we came back and paid the pilot twice as much to come to Austin and fly the banner over the Colorado game the following week.

The week before the Colorado game we had a ton of t-shirts made up and thought we would make a killing. In the meantime at least two-dozen other individuals had taken our slogan and put them on t-shirts as well. I gave up trying to get rid of them before the Tech game. I sat outside of Scholz's with a box full and just watched person after person come by with "Dump DeLoss and Flush the John" on their shirt. In fact, until a couple of years ago, I still had a giant box full of them in the garage.

Looking back, was it the right thing to do? Standing at that point in time, absolutely. DeLoss is a hell of a business man, but he is a terrible judge of coaching talent. The way he handled Abe Lemons. Akers. Weltlich. McWilliams. The "nationwide" coaching search that turned out to be a single trip to Champaign, Illinois to hire the only coach in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs and be fired. Hell, it took Tom Hicks and Royal getting involved just to land Mack Brown. As for Augie, I've always heard Augie called DeLoss after contacting Coach Gus for his blessings. That was a no-brainer. Barnes was a stroke of good fortune, and a solid hire, after Dodd's first choice (Majerus) turned him down.

I tell you what though, after 66 - 3 flying a banner over a football game was the LEAST we could have done.

I remember the plane at the Colorado game very well. I was a freshman. My thoughts at the time were..."Why do we have to suck right when I get to school?"

Those were ugly times, i didnt think it could ever get uglier than Fred's last year but 1997 came close. By the end even those of us who were "sunshine pumpers" admitted a change was needed we just wished it hadnt been such an ugly process. Amazingly enough it was many of the same people who were so ugly in 1997 who were calling for Mack's head in 02 and 03 and if they had their way 05 never would have happened so its a double edged sword. Deloss of course has had the last laugh going down as the best AD in texas history and widely acknowledged as the best in Division One athletics.

Really? I've been told by more than one source whom I trust that Dodd's was in Chicago interviewing Barnett when Hicks called and asked him, "what the hell are you doing up there with [Barnett]?" And, that "he and Royal had just finished interviewing the next head football coach in Atlanta."

The saint is correct. Dodds was not responsible for brown. Dodds gets more credit for our success than he deserves.

Well lets remember, Moffett and DKR hand picked McWilliams.

And yes, I am familiar with the Hicks phone call story. I am also familiar with the fact that the Statesman reported that Dodds had interviews scheduled with both Barnett and Brown prior to anything happening. Dodds was going through the process.

Dodds was also an early proponent of Barnes. Majerius was who the big cigars wanted.

Btw, I don't believe for a second that Augie came to Dodds for the job. Nor do I believe Augie got Gus' blessing considering Gus has had all of nothing to do with Augie since he got here.

As for Abe.....Dodds was told before he took the job that he was gonna have to fire Abe.

As for Coach Gus....I respect the man greatly, but he hung himself on that.

As for this website.... to my knowledge it started in 98. I was still checking Billybob's page when we hired Mack and some idiot named Watchful Eyes was saying we were gonna regret the decision....

I'm stunned, I'm pissed...

I remember back on the old 360 board after we hired Barnes this dude who went by MegaDavidB started a recurring post called 'Barnes Basketball Meter', in which he compared the success of Barnes to that of Penders, hoping to show what a horrible hire he was and that Penders should have been retained. I'd love to see that baby updated again...

Renegade,

I pretty much agree with all points to your post, except one. I have read that Augie did indeed talk to Gus before accepting the job.

Nice post with a lot of points that match my recollections.

DKR didn't hire Mackovic or WELTLICH! Bob Weltlich was ALL dodds. Wasn't Weltlich going to change our basketball culture and take us in a new direction? I really hope someone doesn't start arguing for Kaiser Bob.

My memory tells me that McCombs and Hicks were the big proponents for Brown. I remember reading an article that McCombs plane is the one that brought Brown to Austin.

Two rock-solid constants about Texas football...

1. The backup QB is always better...

2. I know a guy who KNOWS what's going on, and he said...

theSaint - only after Colt's near-heisman year this year was Chiles not considered by a vast minority the better option. Check last years threads - perhaps not calling for Colt's outright replacement, but there was outrage that Chiles wasn't being given a chance, and that Colt was topped-out physically, etc (i.e. similar to the Chris Simms, James Brown, and even Shea Morenz arguments).

On the coaching front, I remember being PISSED that we missed on Barnett - thank GOD I was wrong on that one. I wanted Majerus, too, because he'd been fairly high-profile with Utah in recent years during the NCAAs, but I was happy to get Barnes given his history. Augie was a slam dunk.

Sorry, I call "********" on that bro. There is a big difference between wanting Chiles to get a few snaps in the event McCoy gets hurt, and literally wanting Chiles to start ahead of McCoy.

While i agree with the saint about dodds, I have to disagree about chiles. There were plenty wanting chiles to starts. I think I posted on every chiles thread including the current chiles = percy harvin thread under on the field. For some reason many horns thought chiles was the next vy despite poor spring game showings. I will add harris looked better than chiles in the spring game but he doesn't seem to get much love. Back on topic, I still want to hear a dodds supporter justify kaiser bob.
