DT Quincy Russell is commit No. 19

my guess is they are thinking they are option 1a and 1b.... equal footing. good thing is brown is deciding first, so it's a moot point if they are "equal", as that makes brown the #1 guy.

It is interesting that on the Big Board Update which is the basis of another topic, a decision from Russel wasn't expected until late summer after visits to Nebraska and ou sucks. I'm beginning to think Russel's coach talked him out of this.

Disappointing yes, but if I had to choose between Russell and Westerman, I would choose Westerman 10 out of 10 times.

Hearing from a source that Brown is taking a second look at ou. (Not because of the stuff from above..just decided the needed second look).
Not good, imo

If Brown doesn't want to jump on this freight train then good luck to him at another school. Maybe he can go to OU and watch the Horns win another MNC.

we have some good DTs coming in this year (dorsey, bible and crew). we need to focus on playmakers on the offensive and defensive side b/c that's what we're losing this year (colt, shipley, lamar, kindle). hopefully, this class of beef will make up for the seniors we're losing this year, but it's the DEs, LBs, and DBs that we need to restock.

The emergence of the players at those positions is what has pushed us into the elite team status over the past few years. I'm sure Quincy will develop into a good player, but if he doesn't want to be a part of greatness at texas, we'll see him on the field...

skc

I havent read the whole thread yet, but I have heard speculation that Russell was offered both b/c he has great "upside" but also b/c next years DTs are pretty low, and thus if he red-shirted, he would essentially be the 2012 DT taken.

I am not sure if he will be allowed back with the stance Mack has taken in the past, but maybe he handled himself correctly and was up front with Mack, but regardless, having 19 guys in the fold and our top priority at DT makes it sting less.

Just reading between the lines of the San Antonio article it does seem to me that the coach very likely talked Quincy out of his early commitment. JMHO.

The coach being a Baylor grad, that shouldn't surprise. That being said, I don't think there's any need to go hard on Russell for changing his mind. I'd rather he do it now rather than later in the year when we may not have the options we do now. Besides, I don't really care to have a verbal from someone who's not sure he wants to be a Horn.

A 17 year old Manned up and called he coach first thing when he knew he needed to visit more places. I would rather he go where his heart and head belong.
Maybe his fat lil girl friend decided to go to TT since Leach is gone...

No big deal if he wants to go look a few other places first. He should WANT to come to Texas. Hopefully he figures it out before someone else fills that spot.

what we've heard about coach green is positive stuff. i'm going to bet that quincy and coach green laid out a schedule for how they want to deal with his recruitment, a series of steps that should culminate in a good, sound decision for him. i'm going to bet that coach green simply reminded quincy of their approach and asked him if he was really sure with this commitment. and that answer was not firm.

if quincy isn't sure, coach green did all of us a favor if he got the young man back on a track that hopefully will result in the best situation for him. i certainly hope that it was all handled in a good way and that we would be happy to see him back.

Recruiting's so good for UT right now that we tend to overreact when a kid backs off of his commitment. If Russell ultimately re-commits, assuming there's a place for him, fine. If not, I don't doubt Mack will bag another four or five star to replace Russell. I have got to admit though that it boggles my mind that any d-lineman would back out of a chance to play for Coach Boom.

Yes is yes, not maybe.

Some guys have a hard time saying no to a sales pitch, and apparently he had second thoughts after sleeping on the decision. Nothing wrong with this, if he isn't sure, we should back off and give him time to make a decision he will be happy with. Russell could still decide to end up in Austin, and good defensive tackles don't grow on every tree.
We should just be honest with him about the possibility of the scholarships being gone later in the recruiting season, though.

If he doesn't feel comfortable with his decision, then it is better for him to move on now rather than after his first semester.

There was a recent ariticle (sorry I can't quote) on Mack's recruiting stating he does not take a recruit's verbal commitment until the parents of the recruit have agreed.

This makes this story even more strange. I am with coolhorn on the Baylor grad coach theory.

Whats with all the conjecture?

Just read....
The Link

“I couldn’t sleep,” he said. “Texas is a great place, but I was thinking why I made a decision when I had only visited three schools. I had a bunch of people in my ear, and I got caught up in the moment.”

Following a talk with Hurricanes coach Gary Green on Tuesday, Russell did what his conscience was telling him to do — call Longhorns assistant Duane Akina to tell him he was de-committing.

He also told Rivals on Tuesday, "[Texas] has been my top school from the get-go,"

We'll see what happens, most likely bet by far would be that he eventually signs with Texas, unless they Texas withdraws the scholly.

Hey, who amongst us hasn't jumped to a too-quick decision at age 17 or 18? or 25? 40? 60? The kid's okay for doing this and, as stated above, the Coach is to be applauded for getting this all straightened out.

Hook'em!!!
