92 Ben Alexander 6-0 310 Jr.-2L DT Anderson, SC (T.L. Hanna)
90 Brian Ellis 6-5 287 So.-SQ DT Grand Prairie, TX (South Grand Prairie)
99 Roy Miller 6-2 300 Sr.-3L DT Killeen, TX (Shoemaker)
94 Michael Wilcoxon 6-3 285 Fr.-RS DT Aledo, TX (Aledo)

Only 4 players on scholarship, two have never played, only one ever started a game. Mack talking about moving 250-lb DE's inside to shore it up. Dre Jones a thug. Tyrell Higgins off roster too (why?).

Visions of backs breaking off 8 yard chunks up the middle...

Man I hope Humprhey and Randall are ready. That's scary when you are hoping two true freshman can play right away.

Aaron Lewis has played DT. He'll probably spin in there. It is a cause for concern. The depth chart will be wide open next year, Mr. McFarland? You there?

Historically Mack has gotten a big time DT recruit that would come in and hold down a spot for a few years....Tubbs, Rod Wright, Okam, had Hampton and Rogers when he came in. I think Jones would have been possibly that type of guy. With his absence that is why we are seeing this void. Miller is a senior now and hopefully one or two of these 2 young kids and come in and be that type of player as well. They play and gain experience this year and we may not have a big issue going forward....though need to bring in another big time prospect this year (McFarland) to have the depth needed next year.

Laugh at Reese, but he plugged a 6'1", 265 lb senior in at DT one year, and he ended up leading us in sacks because of the pressure generated by our ends and LBs.

In '08, DEs Lamarr Houston and Aaron Lewis will likely see a lot of PT at the 3-tech DT spot against Spread passing offenses (e.g., Tech). I actually like that look, because it maximizes our pass-rush and athleticism up front.

However, against OU's mammoth, 5-starters-returning OL, we're going to have find someone who can hold his ground in there, or Murray and Brown are going to gouge us inside.

Tubbs was a 1st round draft pick at DT. He started 37 out of 48 games from 00 to 03. He racked up 205 tackles and 19.5 sacks. I would say he was a significant DT recruit, regardless if his position in HS was TE.

At 6'2" and 275 lbs, Houston is a bit undersized at DT. But he's built like a DT from the waist down, and he's really powerful. Think Cedric Woodard, but perhaps more athletic (which is a real compliment, given Woodard's NFL career).

Against pretty much all of our '08 regular season opponents except OU, Houston will be a great option for us at the 3-tech DT spot.

I don't disagree, jt09.

Then again, moving Houston inside gets you two of Orakpo, Lewis, Jones, and Acho on the field along with Houston.

Yeah, does anyone know why Higgins is no longer with us? I thought he was suppose to have some real potential. He was a little light, but a RS yr. could help that. DT is getting to be really a scary position for us. Roy Miller is damn good, but a sr. and Houston moving is ok, but he is not around much longer either. I sure hope we get McFarland and Andre Jones really put us behind the eight ball on depth. You miss on one or two recruits at one position and you get in trouble in a hurry.

Moving Aaron Lewis inside is interesting. I'll always remember his tackle on Adrian Peterson, running him down on a pitch play. Having a DT that can run down the likes of Adrian Peterson.... impressive.

I am not a fan of Houston moving inside either. SEC schools seem to always have 270+ lb DEs and i was hoping we would too, especially vs running teams, ala boOU. i can see it vs teams like TT. I hope Houston is just trying inside to add depth incase of injury and not looking to beat out the others. that would scare me even more. I thought Alexander would be the one that would step up and be the solid #2 man. Humphrey and Randall are hopefully training at home, alot.

Never said Tubbs was not a big time DT. He was one of my favorite players.

The poster referenced big time DT recruits and named Tubbs. Tubbs was originally a TE.

Okay I see. All a bit nitpicky anyways and away from the point. We have had some very good DT's over the last 10 years that have held down spots for a few years each. With Okam now gone and the issue with Jones there will be a short stretch where we don't have that. This is why we are thin at DT b/c we don't have "that" guy to transition from Okam to the "next big guy". DT usually isn't a position we need to get 3 guys a year...now Mack is in that exact position.
