Don't get arrested in this town

Colton Pitonyak was a Longhorn.

Are you gonna paint us all with his brush?

Again, grow the **** up.

jt09,

watched the video. that cop should be ashamed of himself. takes a real man to talk like that to a 14 year old.

Not all cops are scum but a solid percentage of them are. I've told my wife if she ever gets pulled over to drive to a public place if possible. Frankly, I have more reservations about being ****** over by a jackass cop than getting robbed or attacked by a "bad guy".

They have never protected me or my property but they are johny on the spot to take my money in the form of speeding tickets, etc

Most cops are good guys. It's really only a small percentage of them that are the power tripping jerk types. Unfortunately, those are the ones that leave the lasting impression.

I am with ptown on this one. I've had four interactions with a cop in my lifetime.....three of which were for traffic violations. One for speeding on I-45 (62 in a 55...way before they upped the speed limit), one for an expired tag on my license plate due to the dealer's fault, and one for backing into a spot on the side of the road for a concert in Texas stadium. It was next to a feeder road so I thought it would be easier to pull out instead of backing out.

I fail to see how law enforcement has benefited me during my 40+ years of existence. Damn waste of tax dollars if you ask me.

Yeah, the cops are worthless. Let's get rid of 'em. Those folks in Austin who had their little boy kidnapped last week... they should have just been left on their own to find him.

I am hoping my sarcasm meter is out of whack, because if it's not then some of you people are just ******* unreal.

Might as well get rid of the military while your at it... I mean, even in peace time it takes up a huge part of our budget. What has the military done for me lately, anyway?

jt09 that video is unreal. What a jerk man. I wonder if anything ever happened with that cop?

To all of you "cops have never done anything for me" people, just curious -

Do you think that society should have no laws or rules (and hence no need for law enforcers), or that there should be laws and rules of society, but no one responsible for enforcing those laws? If you believe either of those things, please explain to me how that would work in our current society (or, for that matter, any society that has ever existed).

Then, imagine if you had a magic wand and could make all law enforcement disappear. Poof. No civilian law enforcement, no military to come impose order and guard your home. Everyone would be free to do exactly as they please with absolutely no threat of apprehension. Would it affect your daily life? If so, how? Would you still be free to come and go as you please, and to leave your home and family unguarded with the reasonable assurance they would be there when you returned? Could your kids go to school? How would it affect our economy? Would stores and offices still be able to function just as they do now? How long would it take for society to break down? Never? Ten minutes? Somewhere in between? Would you still have the free time to surf the Internet and make sweeping anti-law enforcement proclamations, or would you be too busy banding together with your neighbors to protect your homes and families from marauding bands of looters? (And btw, that last example would make you and your neighbors de facto law enforcement - gasp! - so maybe that's not a fair question given the scenario...)

Of course, the Internet would be a moot point without electricity anyway, since the utility workers who used to keep the power on would be busy guarding their families and possessions too, and therefore unable to come to work. Etc. etc.

If the law enforcers, i.e. the "cops", have never done anything for you, then their absence shouldn't change your life one bit, right?

Still think that law enforcement has done nothing for you?

It would be nice if they did all that **** you just listed and didn't spend most of their ******* time giving out tickets for dim rear lights on your ******* car and being complete ******* ******** while in the process

Nuts,

The cops don't "prevent" crime, they "respond" to crime; the presence of law enforcement isn't what protects me unless your argument is simply that the "fear of reprisal" is what keeps people from harming each other regarding your comment about the "threat of apprehension."

With regard to leaving my ~home and family unguarded~, there are no cops watching my house and protecting me from anything, so I don't understand the "guard your home comment" that you made. Most people know that I don't lock my doors and that the little tiny 1 inch deadbolt on my front door isn't protecting me from harm.

I'm going to agree with one of the other posters who said that the expense is a ~waste of tax dollars~. I don't know the exact percentage of the Austin city budget, but from what I understand, the police are the largest portion of the budget.

I will agree with your comment that me and my neighbors are de facto law enforcement.

That's what protects me. I know most of my neighbors and they're not going to mess with me.

As far as your comment about "marauding bands of looters," that won't happen if people are willing to pay taxes to pay for education/schools/university so that people can become viable economic actors without a reason to steal or harm each other.

I'm not saying that it has to be 1 for me and 19 for the taxman but taxes are what you pay for a civilized society (sorry for the gratuitous Beatles and Oliver Wendell Holmes quotes).

An educated and prosperous society are what protects me, not cops sitting on the side of the road with a radar gun trying to generate revenue for the city.

Praise of Folly, you are full of ****.

Cops protect you every day. Responding to crime is protection and if you don't think so then you aren't nearly as smart as you think you are.

The fact is that if you are threatened and call 911 a cop will be there in 5-10 minutes. Hell I called 911 accidentally and hung up and a cop knocked on my door 5 minutes later to make sure every thing was ok.

That same cop happened to be in the area because, God forbid, he was enforcing the speed limit on a nearby road. He didn't make the speed limit 45, but he was tasked with enforcing it. But when he got a call that someone had called 911 and hung up he immediately rolled to my house to check it out.

He was very nice and polite and even gave my kids some of those cop badge stickers.

I'm sure he then went right back to doing his job and enforcing the laws that LAWMAKERS put on the books.

Cops don't make laws and it's not their job to decide which laws to enforce. The fact that they are out there deters crime and if you don't think that's true then you are ******* clueless. Criminals know that if someone sees them in the act of committing a crime they better haul ***. If the cops response time was 30 minutes or an hour instead of 5-10 minutes the crime rate would go up considerably.

There are plenty of bad cops and the nature of police work attracts an aggressive personality. They have to be. They are trained that way for a reason. The people they deal with on a regular basis are ten times the ******** that most people around here paint cops to be.

Just to let you know, I've been arrested a couple of times for warrants for unpaid tickets. I"m not proud of it, and frankly I think it's stupid and a waste of everybody's time, but I didn't blame the cops for doing their jobs and they treated me just like I treated them. If I had been a punk and pissed and moaned about something I brought on myself, they probably would have gotten a little snippy with me. Gee, what a bunch of worthless ********!

I agree 100%, Eastwood, and those 10% need to be severely punished and removed from the force.

BTW on the same note Doctors are ******** who are completely worthless. They don't prevent disease, they just respond to it. Many times they don't talk nicely to you and sometimes even kill people.

Isn't is Suttree who often points out that 10% of doctors account for 80% of malpractice.

Same for cops people. Nobody thinks cops like in the OP shouldn't be hammered. We just don't think all cops should be painted with that brush.

Clearly the "cops suck" comments are hyperbole. The obvious core idea is that there are too many bad cop events for this level to be acceptable. That's all.
