does UT represent Texas

I have been here for a while 'cause I like some posts here. These posts sound objective, especiall after the last year bowl game and during the spring.
But I don't understand why most of the fans here insist that UT represents Texas? Is it because of the academic ranking? I am an international student and care more about ranking after I were here. A&M ranks the 49th and the same as UT austin and Rice is a much better university academically. Some programs of Baylor are execellent. So is it only on this board or all over Texas, do people believe that UT reprents Texas?

It represents all that's good about Texas. Honor, class, power, ambition.

A&M represents all that's bad about Texas. Bumpkins, bad teeth, red necks, fat chicks with big hair.

shouldn't the name be the UT at austion? Like UC la, sd, davis or irvin etc. Because I at lest know UT at Dallas. If I don't know much about academics, I probably will regard UT Dallas as the best Univ. in Texas 'cause Dallas is much better known than austion.

The official name is The University of Texas-Austin. It is not referred to its full name because it is THE main university in the system. When you talk about the big state school, you usually dont say UF-Gainesville, UT-Knoxville, etc... Do you see Cal-Berkeley on their athletic teams uniforms?

This should answer your question:
The Texas Constitution

Article 7 - EDUCATION
Section 10 - ESTABLISHMENT OF UNIVERSITY;

The legislature shall as soon as practicable establish, organize and provide for the maintenance, support and direction of a University of the first class, to be located by a vote of the people of this State, and styled, "The University of Texas," for the promotion of literature, and the arts and sciences, including an Agricultural, and Mechanical department.

We're TEXAS................It's ......THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS....
THE UNIVERSITY is the FLAGSHIP school in the state. We are a state of mind........we're TEXAS.

GO HORNS

No CarKev, he's got to be an Aggie, not a Sooner.

Aggies are the only ones who are overly preoccupied with the fact that we are called "Texas" and they are not.

To clarify an above misstatement.... The official name of the school is The University of Texas at Austin.

If you don't believe me, look at your diploma.

As to the original question: We represent Texas because we are the flagship university of the first and largest state university system. We are public, as opposed to private, which trumps Rice in terms of this discussion. Of the public schools, we are by far the most respected academically.

Case closed.

In waht manner do you mean? The student body represents Texas pretty well in its diversity. It may be a little more white than the overall state population, but that is higher education.

Aggies and Techies would argue that The University does not represent the rest of Texas in values, philosophy, etc. I would argue that no university/college holds the same ideals as citizns out in the "the world." Universities and colleges are enclosed places where ideas are shared, explored and stretched. Anytown, Texas is much more conformist and much less exploratory in nature. Even a7m has its clashes with mainstream Texas (of course, I would say that is all they do).

UT gets the most money, which often (but not always) means the programs get better. Right now, UT and A&M are the only "Top-tier" universities in Texas. I am sure the people at Rice would call ********, but they do not have the research capabilities that the two biggies do. As an overall university, UT is light years ahead of evryone else in the state. Sure, Baylor's law school might be ranked high today. But what about their nuclear engineering? What about their public policy? Rice has no law school or medical school.

I guess it is apples and oranges, unless you look at specific programs.

No way the farm school can rank with UT academically.

I know they lobbied U.S. News and every other publication known to man, but you cannot create enough "alumni donation" and "cost of living" categories to ever equate The University of Texas with that manufacturing center for morons known as Texas A&M. There is simply no comparison.

I'll give texas this. Their academics have been far and above better than A&M's on the whole of both school's histories. This gives them a higher reputation. But as of late (and I would say the may grads are the latest, like me) the overall ranking holds more weight in terms of job seeking. This is hard to swallow for some of the older texas-exes, but for those of us in school or recently graduated, the two are very close if not equal, as the USNWR rankings show.

The USNWR rankings are a TOTAL JOKE. They have UT ranked above a&m in every subcategory aside maybe pertroleum engineering and ag science. UT is ranked higher in Engineering, Business, Liberal Arts, Communications, Natural Sciences, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, Law etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. How exactly do the come up with the two as being equal. It makes no sense whatsoever. Also these rankings dont take into effect grad school, which not even aggies deny, UT is far superior.

Here's a true story.

I have a relative (by marraige) that goes to A&M. Anyway, she got pulled over just outside College Station on her way home one weekend. The cop seeing the Aggie stickers on her car ask "if she goes to A&M?" She says "yes", and he goes on to tell her he's a graduate of Texas A&M. My relative being the Aggies she is then says, "why are you a cop?" This was one ticket she didn't get out of.

Look, the state of Texas has several good, state-supported schools such as Sul Ross, Southwest, North Texas, Tech, A&M, Houston, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, UTEP, A&M Kingsville, etc., etc. All of them have their expertise, whether it is criminology or animal husbandry or hotel & restaurant management.
.
Texas has some great private schools like SMU, Rice, and Baylor which have programs that are amoung the highest rated in the nation.
.
However, the state of Texas, like most other states, has one, single, flagship, state university. In our case, it is the University of Texas at Austin. It is the biggest school (although it probably won't be forever), it has the most broad-reaching degree programs, it has the best overall academic ranking, the largest endowment, the largest alumni association, the best athletics, the largest research budget, the highest-ranking student body overall. By just about any objective measure, it is the best in the state, and so the answer is YES, UT does represent the state of Texas. I know objectivity is hard to come by in the Bryan metropolitan area, but those are the facts.
.
If you don't believe this answers your question, just check the name on the jersey!
