Do You Know How Obamacare Will Affect You?

Since the Obamacare individual health care mandates kick in Oct. 1, ABC conducted a poll to see what Americans thought about it. They found that 62% of Americans don't understand how it will affect them. I'm in that group.

In general, I expect my health care cost to rise, in part to pay for the people that are going to get free health care through the Exchanges, and I expect that I'll have to pay some doctors out of my pocket because they'll quit accepting insurance payments. Also, I expect more government intrusion into my life as the IRS starts to monitor my health care.

I don't think the cost of your insurance is going to go up because people getting FREE healthcare through the exchanges. I'm not sure where you are getting free from.

The cost of your healthcare is either going to go up or down based upon the exclusion of pre-existing conditions. If you are healthy and your healthcare cost are relatively low get ready for an increase. However if you have a pre-existing condition, are old, obese, or something else that normally causes the price of health insurance to be high you will see your costs go down.

Personally, I've always been on a corporate plan and have insured to never have a lapse of coverage. Thus my costs are likely going to go up. However, as my wife is basically un-insurable (except through a corporate plan) this will allow us to have options to buy insurance through the exchange in the future. We may have to pay more than we've ever paid before but I guess at least there is that option now.

In fact, most companies will simply hire part time workers so they are not legally obligated to provide health insurance coverage.

The problem with passing idiotic, bloated, and unworkable laws like obamacare is that the law is never designed to apply to all people equally. Isn't the point of making a "law" to provide an iron clad rule that applies to everybody in the society that passed it?

sorry about your wife and this issue of pre existing conditions should be addressed
Several of the GOP reform plans did
obamacare is not the only plan to address that

Vol, I don't think you got my point. I believe doing away with pre-existing conditions is the biggest driver to the cost going up.

Horn6721, I'll be helped personally in regards to obamacare, but I'm still against it. The reason being that the ultimate goal is single payer system, I have little to no doubt about it. Eventually my wife will be triaged out of the system as her health will be too costly . Keep in kind none of her issues are hard to treat, however it requires lots of doctor visits and lots of expensive medication.

If the price is somewhat close to what I pay now through my employer I plan on buying health care so I can go back to the doctor I had before. My company went with Aetna which is a horrible company to deal with on both sides of the business coin. It'd be worth it to get to go back to the doctor I love who does not accept Aetna as they are so hard to deal with.

good for you
I don't know what you have but even medicare users will see their rates go
and coverage changes
military also
maybe people on Medicaid won't see changes

I don't know another category that won't

Texas81, my guess is the coverage will change slightly (but not noticeably to most) as there are things that must be covered now that many corporate plans may or may not have covered. That being said as you stated end of life treatment is definitely a drag on the whole system, however my guess is that it won't get better but worse. With politicians at the controls there is no way any of them are going to want to be the ones who let Granny die without even trying.

I am no expert, but work daily with those who are much more educated on the expected effects on premiums.

Those who shop for coverage, are going to see rates go up, even after accounting for the impact of pre-existing conditions and after accounting for the impact of subsidies. In Texas, a 27 year old male can expect an increase of about 77% on premiums between this year and next year. A 40 year old male can expect an increase around 90%. The rate increases for females are estimated in the 30 percent range.

Rates are going higher to enable the government to cover everyone. It requires many young, healthy people to buy insurance in order to cover costs of those who are not healthy. It is simply a way of sharing the costs. If you are healthy, or you are young, the Obama administration expects you to do your duty and pay up. If you believe you can add everyone to the health plan without increasing costs, you are simply a sucker for the government's spin.

As I am old and self-employed, it looks like my outrageous premiums will be going down. Way down. Hmmm ...

Between this and the subsidy for the Nissan Leaf I am on the verge of purchasing, it's been a good year. Thanks, guys!

That is because you are "old." Someone else will have to pay more to cover for your higher risk. Some call it income redistribution. In my example, my premiums would increase more than $6,000 per year with a higher out of pocket limit. Yippee!

So overweight, smoking alcoholics will need someone to eventually cover their premiums when the healthy, young people just pay the lower cost penalty for not getting insurance. Then, they will be coming after your premiums to help offset those costs. Then we can all hold hands and shout for joy on Obamacare!

Republicans had six years when they controlled both houses of Congress and the White House and when health care insurance premiums were rising at an average of more than 13% per year and failed to enact any kind of meaningful healthcare reform. They failed to do so and instead launched an invasion of Iraq that will ultimately cost trillions. And now they whine that Obamacare is too expensive. It is, of course, but that's beside my point, which is that when they were in control they nearly doubled the size of the federal government, gave us the prescription healthcare benefit, added a whole new department which is now collecting all sorts of data on Americans, and continued the obscene subsidies of big oil, big agriculture etc...

Truly, we get the government we deserve.

I expect my premiums will go down slightly because I am going to switch from my gold plan to a silver or bronze one. Without Obamacare I would not be able to do this because I have a pre-existing condition and the exchanges are a better way for me to buy.

Oh the people who always vote for Santa Claus, no matter what it does to the nation.
