From reading that, it doesn't look like this will end up being the same 'test the waters and return' approach that AJ appears to be taking.

Renewal letters don't go out until June, right? As a matter of course, returning players get them, though I suppose it's possible someone might be slighted. Therefore, one more scholarship available once DJ goes. Barnes could hold it open until DJ gets an agent or June 16, the date to withdraw, but I can't say for sure. If Ebanks or Witherspoon said they want to sign today, I don't think I'd tell them they had to wait.

I'm actually a little surprised that he left a foot out the door (w.r.t. not signing an agent).

Congrats to him and thanks for his contributions to UT during his time here.

The linked article says DJ didn't hire an agent so he could come back if he suffers a debilitating injury before the draft but intends to leave otherwise.

But DMN says DJ is hiring an agent.

Edit: Sorry, it says he "will hire an agent." That, I suppose, covers the possibility that he won't hire the agent until tryouts are over.

Could have been a mistake... easy to leave a word out, like "not."

But I can't imagine him going through a workout and hearing, "We would have taken you in the first round before we saw you in the tournament."

I am glad they decided to come to Texas and wish them the best in the future but man if we could have kept some a little longer we might have had an NC in Men's College Basketball.

James isn't going. Neither is Abrams. Augustin leaving will be a huge loss, but I trust Barnes more than any coach on campus.

When Durant bolted, we were (hopefully) looking at a top 25 finish this season, and look what we got. I'll continue to have very high hopes and expectations, regardless of who leaves early, as long as it isn't Barnes.

After all the hardships he went through with Katrina, it's great to see him on the threshold of realizing his dream. It couldn't happen to a nicer kid.

I'm really proud of DJ. I'm so happy he'll get to realize his dream of playing in the NBA. We'll have another great ambassador of Texas basketball in the league and that's never a bad thing.

I thought that with the way Kevin has handled himself this year that it will be a long time before we have that type of humble, high character, do-everything-right representative of the school.

But I think DJ will live up to every bit of the standard Durant has set. Probably not from a play standpoint, but from a character standpoint absolutely.

I'm probably more amazed of the type of kids Barnes produces than the type of teams he does.

DJ is a special young man and a great player. The team that is about to draft him is very lucky.

Very happy for DJ... will check espn box scores for another horn in the league.

also sad, however. the definition of 'bitter sweet'

I hope for the best for DJ. I worry about his career in the NBA b/c of his lack of size and elite level athleticism (see Ford, TJ) but staying another year or two wouldn't help that any. The guy was an AWESOME college point guard, a great student athlete and a great leader, and now he's going to get paid well for at least 3 years.

Good for you DJ and all the luck in the world in the league.

Hope he finds a good place where he can succeed and thrive.

Hookem DJ.

I feel like the Memphis coach, its sad for me and my family but allsome for DJ. Good luck in the NBA.

Will miss DJ painfully. I just wish that the draft wasn't so loaded with PGs so that he could stand out even more.

I'm sad to see him go, too. But, he joins what is becoming a long list of players that will makes recruiting a lot easier for Coach Barnes

We'll be in fine shape at PG with Doug "I've never seen people not guard somebody the way they do me," Gottlieb ...er, I mean Dogus Balbay.

Two confounding points:
To reiterate the one from earlier... it's sending guys like DJ through the program in two years that keeps great players looking at the program, and...

Unfortunately, the kinds of players that you need to win the NC don't really want to be on your team... they'd rather be in the NBA....

Do you guys really think he is good enough to play in the league?
I think he could be great in Europe, but I just don't see him making it in the league.
