Did Obama Wiretap The Donald?

Donald Trump has accused Barack Obama of “wire tapping” his offices in New York City before the presidential election in November last year, claiming the former president had overseen a “Nixon/Watergate”-style intervention.

Launching a series of tweets at 5.35am eastern time on Saturday morning, the US president said: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

He followed up that initial tweet with a string of others in the following 30 minutes that claimed Obama had defied a court rejection to tap his office, and invited a “good lawyer” to make a case against the alleged process.

The president then compared the alleged surveillance of his communications to Watergate – the scandal in the early 1970s that brought down Republican president Richard Nixon after he ordered a break-in of the Democrats’ Washington headquarters.

Yes, he did wiretap the campaign.
I wrote about this back in January

....And, yes, a sitting President allowing the FBI wiretap the nominee for President from an opposing party, collecting essentially all of that campaign's communications down the homestretch of an election is about as far out on the limb as you can go. Add to that no crime was alleged (which is why they went the FISA route) and Obama is way out these at the end of the limb.....

the original post on diff thread

The Obama Admin sought FISA warrants against 4 members of the Trump Team during the last months and weeks of the presidential campaign. These are 'wiretap' warrants. The FISA element allows for a lower burden of proof than a standard warrant (i.e., no showing of probable cause of a crime is required).

The record is not complete but Obama may have even sought the FISA warrant against Trump himself. The FISA Court originally turned Obama/FBI down. But some say it was granted later (unclear on this last part).

The short version is that Obama sought to use the FBI to spy on Trump and his campaign. This is Richard Nixon level stuff, or worse. This what Banana Republics use against political adversaries.

Here is Mark Levine's outline of Obama's Silent Coup

Levin called Obama’s effort “police state” tactics, and suggested that Obama’s actions, rather than conspiracy theories about alleged Russian interference in the presidential election to help Trump, should be the target of congressional investigation.

Drawing on sources including the New York Times and the Washington Post, Levin described the case against Obama so far, based on what is already publicly known. The following is an expanded version of that case, including events that Levin did not mention specifically but are important to the overall timeline.

1. June 2016: FISA request. The Obama administration files a request with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) to monitor communications involving Donald Trump and several advisers. The request, uncharacteristically, is denied.

2. July: the Russia joke. Wikileaks releases emails from the Democratic National Committee that show an effort to prevent Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) from winning the presidential nomination. In a press conference, Donald Trump refers to Hillary Clinton’s own missing emails, joking: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing.” That remark becomes the basis for accusations by Clinton and the media that Trump invited further hacking.

3. October: Podesta emails. In October, Wikileaks releases the emails of Clinton campaign chair John Podesta, rolling out batches every day until the election, creating new mini-scandals. The Clinton campaign blames Trump and the Russians.

4. October: FISA request. The Obama administration submits a new, narrow request to the FISA court, now focused on a computer server in Trump Tower suspected of links to Russian banks. No evidence is found — but the wiretaps continue, ostensibly for national security reasons, Andrew McCarthy at National Review later notes. The Obama administration is now monitoring an opposing presidential campaign using the high-tech surveillance powers of the federal intelligence services.

5. January 2017: Buzzfeed/CNN dossier. Buzzfeed releases, and CNN reports, a supposed intelligence “dossier” compiled by a foreign former spy. It purports to show continuous contact between Russia and the Trump campaign, and says that the Russians have compromising information about Trump. None of the allegations can be verified and some are proven false. Several media outlets claim that they had been aware of the dossier for months and that it had been circulating in Washington.

6. January: Obama expands NSA sharing. As Michael Walsh later notes, and as the New York Times reports, the outgoing Obama administration “expanded the power of the National Security Agency to share globally intercepted personal communications with the government’s 16 other intelligence agencies before applying privacy protections.” The new powers, and reduced protections, could make it easier for intelligence on private citizens to be circulated improperly or leaked.

7. January: Times report. The New York Times reports, on the eve of Inauguration Day, that several agencies — the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Treasury Department are monitoring several associates of the Trump campaign suspected of Russian ties. Other news outlets also report the exisentence of “a multiagency working group to coordinate investigations across the government,” though it is unclear how they found out, since the investigations would have been secret and involved classified information.

8. February: Mike Flynn scandal. Reports emerge that the FBI intercepted a conversation in 2016 between future National Security Adviser Michael Flynn — then a private citizen — and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. The intercept supposedly was part of routine spying on the ambassador, not monitoring of the Trump campaign. The FBI transcripts reportedly show the two discussing Obama’s newly-imposed sanctions on Russia, though Flynn earlier denied discussing them. Sally Yates, whom Trump would later fire as acting Attorney General for insubordination, is involved in the investigation. In the end, Flynn resigns over having misled Vice President Mike Pence (perhaps inadvertently) about the content of the conversation.

9. February: Times claims extensive Russian contacts. The New York Times cites “four current and former American officials” in reporting that the Trump campaign had “repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials. The Trump campaign denies the claims — and the Times admits that there is “no evidence” of coordination between the campaign and the Russians. The White House and some congressional Republicans begin to raise questions about illegal intelligence leaks.

10. March: the Washington Post targets Jeff Sessions. The Washington Post reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had contact twice with the Russian ambassador during the campaign — once at a Heritage Foundation event and once at a meeting in Sessions’s Senate office. The Post suggests that the two meetings contradict Sessions’s testimony at his confirmation hearings that he had no contacts with the Russians, though in context (not presented by the Post) it was clear he meant in his capacity as a campaign surrogate, and that he was responding to claims in the “dossier” of ongoing contacts. The New York Times, in covering the story, adds that the Obama White House “rushed to preserve” intelligence related to alleged Russian links with the Trump campaign. By “preserve” it really means “disseminate”: officials spread evidence throughout other government agencies “to leave a clear trail of intelligence for government investigators” and perhaps the media as well.

In summary: the Obama administration sought, and eventually obtained, authorization to eavesdrop on the Trump campaign; continued monitoring the Trump team even when no evidence of wrongdoing was found; then relaxed the NSA rules to allow evidence to be shared widely within the government, virtually ensuring that the information, including the conversations of private citizens, would be leaked to the media.

As Shakespear said, one may smile and smile and be a villain.

While talking about "smooth transition" being an American tradition and meeting with Trump at the WH, Obama was tapping Trump's phones and trying to torpedo his Presidency. Obama is the dangerous one, not Trump. That is Nixonesque.

And, of course, not much has been made of Obama setting up a residence two miles from the WH. This week Valerie Jarrett moved into the place. Pretty sure Obama is planning something more sinister than 3-ways with Val & Michelle.

Pretty serious charges. Sounds very Watergate-esque. Would not be too surprised given that the Obama administration has already used the IRS to target their political opponents.

Pretty serious charge indeed.

You would think this would be the lead story on the media networks this morning. But CNN.com headline story is "Untangling Trump and Russia," while this little thing of the President accusing a former president wire-tapping him for political strong arming is buried.

Here, Ryan seems to admit knowledge that Obama wiretapped Trump during the election, while trying to dance around a specific admission of knowledge

I set this to FF to ~ 4:10

Perp walk time for Obama?

18 USC §2384 - Seditious conspiracy: two or more persons in any State or Territory conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy the Government of the United States or prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States.

Lets be honest here. If he is guilty of doing something shady we know for a fact Obama will get away with it.

There were a lot of stupid things said during the last election. Yet somehow the FBI obtained a FISA wiretap of a candidate for President based on the thinnest, stupidest allegations possible.

One thing liberals do not seem to be considering if this is the case. Indeed, they never consider the other side of the coin. If a President can wiretap his enemies based on laughable claims printed in Slate, then another President could do the same thing with Breitbart claims as well. This is always the problem for liberals' lack of principle. It will eventually come back to bite you.

This is just unbelievable. Why isn't the mainstream news not covering this and helping fox news and a few other news agencies be a true watch dog of our Government no matter what political party is abusing this. Is this ok with fake news CNN that this kind of stuff is happening? I can't believe that all of America is not demanding answers on this. Russia will be Russia, but our own government is not suppose to be this way. again, JUST UNBELIEVABLE!

Now watch the Libs on the board try to deflect toward Trump and Russia. This is craziness.

An Obama spokesperson has issued a sort of denial. You will note that they do not actually deny that the warrant happened.

You might also note the extremely careful wording. Call it "lawyerly." He says "ordered." Well, guess what? The Executive Branch cannot order a FISA warrant. Only the FISA Court itself can order such a warrant. Obama is hiding behind the idea that if you merely submit a request to the FISA Court, then you are not "ordering" anything.

Everyone in the Executive Branch, including everyone at Justice, is accountable to the President. A FISA court only approves those wiretaps the Administration, under the ultimate direction of the President, requests. And, of course, Obama would have known that the FISA court approved the wire tap. He would be briefed. And it is Obama's aides who are pushing out the resulting intel through "leaks."

Furthermore, Trump I do not know if this was his intent but "wiretap" often applies strictly to landlines. Leaving open other forms of surveillance.

You might also recall the background in this area. The Obama Admin went after conservative organizations. And it also spied on the AP and Fox (Obama even tapped James Rosen's parents!).

So, this denial is shades of Al Gore's infamous "no controlling legal authority" denial. More dickmoves by Obama.

I suppose I will wait a few days to see whether this is true. If so, then I will be outraged. Really.

For the same reasons they refused to look into the Clinton Foundation's pay-for-play while Hills was SoS.
Or, Donna Brazile giving Hillary the CNN town hall questions ahead of time.
Or, Obama/Clinton/Rice's coordination with Soros to interfere with elections in the Ukraine.
Or, the original Obamacare promises.
Or, Seth Rich's murder.
Or, anything else to do with these people.

Here is the Rosen story, if you missed it (which you may have since there was no media outcry over this (or anything else Obama did)) -- he listed reporter James Rosen as a criminal co-conspirator --

Newly uncovered court documents reveal the Justice Department seized records of several Fox News phone lines as part of a leak investigation -- even listing a number that, according to one source, matches the home phone number of a reporter's parents.

The seizure was ordered in addition to a court-approved search warrant for Fox News correspondent James Rosen's personal emails. In the affidavit seeking that warrant, an FBI agent called Rosen a likely criminal "co-conspirator," citing a wartime law called the Espionage Act.

Rosen was not charged, but his movements and conversations were tracked. A source close to the leak investigation confirmed to Fox News that the government obtained phone records for several numbers that match Fox News numbers out of the Washington bureau.

Further, the source confirmed to Fox News that one number listed matched the number for Rosen's parents in Staten Island.

And here is the AP story -- all kidding aside, this story is pretty chilling.

And does it not make you wonder who else's rights was Obama out there trampling that we do not yet know about? Further, given what we do know -- this AP story, the Rosen story and the Lerner/IRS story, would it shock anyone that Obama was also willing to wiretap the Trump Campaign -- to aid Hillary and to save "his legacy?"

Just for the record, for a couple years in here I sounded off about Obama weaponizing the federal bureaucracy against his enemies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed outgoing calls for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, for general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and for the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP. It was not clear if the records also included incoming calls or the duration of the calls.

In all, the government seized the records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown, but more than 100 journalists work in the offices where phone records were targeted, on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.

In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.

You libs on this board, I bet you need a shower after any defense of the criminal that is Barack Hussein Obama. He's 100% worse than Nixon ever thought about being. This guy deserves prison, but I'm guessing Executive Privilege or something like that will protect him. Any of you Lawyers want to tell us if there is anything that can be done to nail this criminal?

JF
I forgot, if I ever read, that AP story. I can see why most of media did not care about it happening to Fox but geezer AP?
I wonder if there was ever a follow up or if AP ever explained why this happened in the first place. Espionage like with Rosen?
BO was and is one scary dude. Scarier is that so many were right there with him and willingly did his dirty work.
SMH

And they call Trump thin skinned?

Obama prosecuted more journalists under the Espionage Act than all previous administrations combined. Is it really much of a stretch to think he also spied on Trump?

Yet our media gets outraged more about Trump's tweets than they ever did for Obama trying to send journalists to prison. What is WRONG with our media?

Here was what they said back then -- what Obama had the DOJ say, "We cannot sanction or condone federal employees who knowingly and willfully disclose classified information to the media."

It is now too late for Obama to pardon himself.
He really was convinced Hillary was going to win, wasnt he?
OK, so, tell me again who was it that interfered with a US election? Was it the Russians, or was it Obama?

I think we, the people, have a right to know if anything gathered from these FISA wiretaps was passed on to the Clinton Campaign.
