DH Texas vs. Cal Game 1

Cal brings in a new pitcher Ryan Nathan for the seventh.

Gurwitz leads things off against him and he K's swinging for out one.

B. Marlow the top of the order comes up and he flies a foul ball to left and it drops between three Bears to remain alive.
He line one to center that the center fielder makes a diving catch for out two.

So Payton comes up and for one of the few times he is retired on ground ball to second to retire the side in order.

Stretch time at Evans Ball Park tied at 1-1 as we Watoosi to the between innings music.

Peters still out there hurling and the lead off hitter flies out to Payton in center for out one.

The next hitter walks on a full count pitch as the Texas bench is not happy about it.

One out and one on for Cal and another base on balls puts runners on first and second with one away.

A ground ball to second goes for a 6-4 force as the relay to first is not in time for the dp.

Two down and runners again on the corners for Cal.

Dillon bears down and a fly ball to left ends the threat.

Seven innings in the books and we remain tied at 1-1.

Top of the eighth finds Hinojosa leading off with a liner to left that is caught for the first out.

Barrera grounds out to third for the second out.

McGuire again at third today is up trying to extend the inning, but he K's swinging to retire the side in order.

Going to the bottom of the 8th still tied 1-1.

Peters is still on the mound for Texas, but it's Justin Peters as Dillon Peters is done for the day. He gives up one run in sevenings of work with the only run being unearned.

The lead off man flies to left and Gurwitz misjudges the ball coming in on the ball and it goes over his head for a lead off double.

The defensive lapses may just kill us again.

The next batter bunts the runner up to third with one away.

A line drive up the middle is a single in front of Payton to give Cal a 2-1 lead.

Here comes Skip and Justin Peters is done and in comes Travis Duke.

Another game is slipping away and just like last year before you know it they start to add up if you don't stem the tide.

Duke on now with one on and one away.

He faces the DH Rodriguez. He grounds to second and Marlow goes to first as the runner moves to second with two down.

A fly ball to center ends the inning.

But the damage is done, the run is earned, but the double could have been caught. All that matters now is that Texas trails 2-1 with one more chance to keep the game going by at least doubling our run output for the season.

Montalbano leads off the ninth and he K's swinging for out one.

Clemens up trying to start something somehow and he does with a sharp single to left.

Carter comes in to pinch run for Clemens.

Johnson up and he singles up the middle past the shortstop who tried to flip the ball from his glove to second for a force before he had the ball.

So it's runners on the corners for Felts who pinch hits and on the first pitch grounds into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Cal wins 2-1 as runners continue to die on the base paths for the Horns.

This sure looks much like last year with two starting pitchers now both going deep into a game giving up no earnerd runs and they both result in losses.

To keep in the Berkley theme. "What Condition is is Your Condition In"? Well for the Texas Baseball Team it's much the same condition as 2013 and that ain't good.

Well sports fans we have nothing for game two. No Craig Way that I paid for and certainly no video by Cal. There is not even anymore RTF student radio as the boys are heading off for a double feature of "Eraserhead" and "Blue Velvet" down at the groovy film fest.

Two games in and what we have seen so far is 2013 redux. A lot of baseball still to play but this sucks so far.
