You judge a lawyer by his conduct, not who he represents. If he conducts himself with a reverence for the rule of law, he's doing good even if he's representing the evil human being. On the flip side, if he conducts himself with a contempt or disregard for the rule of law, he's doing evil even if he's representing the most worthy and decent clients.
It took balls for Adams to take the Boston massacre case. Nobody wanted it, because the soldiers were hated. (It would be like if Bin Laden had been arrested instead of killed and a lawyer in the US took his case.) Adams took it and gave them an exceptional defense, and he basically beat the rap. Most of the soldiers were acquitted, and the few who weren't got light sentences. In the end people respected Adams more because of his integrity, even if they hated his clients.
