Derrick Johnson

I went to Barton Creek Mall last night to buy me some shoes at Footlocker, as I was looking at these all black Adidas I notice a man and his woman walk in, and lo and behold it was Derrick Johnson. At first I was not sure but then I herd him ask the ref. "Do you have any Air Force" and I then knew that it was him because I recognized his voice from TV interviews. I had never seen him in person before so I kept looking to see if it really was him and it sure was. I decided to ask the ref if he had any of these black Adidas in size 13, he took the shoes from me and he took off to the back. Derrick was standing next to me ( about 10 ft) and the ref brought back the shoe and I asked the ref for his opinion on these shoes and he said they were good. I then looked at Derick and asked his opinion and he said " they are alright" with a smirk on his face. so I proceeded to go and try them on. While I was tying the shoes he walks by with the girl he was with and says to me "hey, they look cool" and the girl he was with said "What did you say" and he said "I was talking to him"

Thats when I became convinced that I should buy these black Adidas. Kinda felt like a commercial, it was so cool, I was stoked that he approved of my new shoes and that he was in the same store I was in. Too bad i did not have a camera with me, with that said, does anybody have any similar brushes with ex Long Horn greats? I would appreciate any stories that you have to contribute to this thread.

december 1998. barton creek mall. i'm doing some christmas shopping and i see ricky williams walk in to the men's warehouse, presumably to buy or rent (he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to own one) a tux for the upcoming heisman presentation. a few people were scrambling to kay-bee to buy a football to go bother him for an autograph, but I just let him TCB. that's the closest brush i've had.

i got to play against christian campbell and houston street every year for 6 years in football. james street and earl were at each of the games. when we were in the 7th grade earl invited everyone from both "A" teams and gave everyone sausage wraps from the back of his suburban.

it helped us lick the wounds of a terrible loss.

It was a couple days after the '05 Rose Bowl, a buddy and I were standing in line trying to talk to a gate agent at the Las Vegas airport (flying standby sucks), when all of a sudden a huge black guy in burnt orange warmups with a backpack walks by. I see him out of the corner of my eye and comment to my friend "hm, that guy looks like a football player." My friend is like "HOLY ****, THAT'S DJ!!" We immediately jump out of line, pull our game programs out of our carry-ons, and run up to him.

I was too starstruck to say anything (we were juniors at the time), but below is a transcript of my friend's conversation with him.

friend: hey Derrick, how's it goin?
DJ: just tryin' to get home, man.
friend: yah, us too...awesome game man, would you sign our programs?
Destroyer of QBs: yah, no problem guys.
he autographs his picture in both of our programs...the one where he's rockin the #40 jersey

friend: thanks a lot, good luck in the draft.
DJ: thanks y'all.

Pure greatness.

Three years ago we were at the hooters at Lakecreek pkwy. As I was sitting there with some friends eating my wings and drinking my beer. In walks VY, Bo Scaife, Justin Blalock, Phillip Geigar and Rod Wright. It was Bo's birthday so they made ride around hooters on a little wodden horse. It was awesome. All the other horns were cracking up laughing taking pictures. I got my picture taken with all of them, it made my night. PS they can put away the wings!!!!

DJ is one of those guys that just did what was necessary. cant think of a time he ever did anything close to embarrass the University.

Met DJ a couple years ago just after the draft. One of the nicest guys ever. Asked him if he'd be showing the NFL his patented fumble-causing punch tackle thing. "Most Definitely", he said.

I saw vy in feb. '05 at Dave and Busters. He was with a girl waiting for some of his friends to join him for dinner. I walked up to him put my arm on his shoulder and asked for his autograph. He signed a napkin for me and I told him thanks and that I wanted to see him strike the heisman pose next year. Seriously. I don't know what I was thinking.

His friends that showed up for dinner turned out to be vasher, DJ, and other former longhorn greats.

A couple of months ago, I was in the Academy near 183 and Oak Knoll in NW Austin. I came out of the fitting room and saw this huge dude walking along one of the aisles that looked familiar but I couldn't place him at first. Now, I'm a pretty big dude myself... 6' and around 250, but he made me look small. After a few seconds it dawned on me that it was Derek Lokey. And his mom (I think it was his mom) was with him... I thought that was cute... Derek out shopping with him mom

Oh, how could I forget my other brush with Longhorn greatness...

I think it was about 7-8 years ago, my son and I were at the Golds Gym near 620 & 183 and I noticed James Brown walking by us. This was when he was playing for the first arena team that played at the Travis County Expo Center. So I told my son who it was (he was in 7th or 8th grade at the time and didn't recognize James) and encouraged him to go say hi. I told him to just ask James if "Steelers Roll Left" means anything to him. He went and did that and I could just see James' face light up when my son said that to him. They talked for a few minutes after that... made my son's day

I saw this big black guy with a texas shirt. He might have been a football player. He got in his car.

In 2004 or 2005 i saw Ahmad Hall in the Albertsons on East Riverside a couple of times.

In like 2005 or 2006 i saw DJ in the HEB on East Riverside.

in december 2007 i saw Scott Derry, Tray Allen, and a couple of others in the Phoenix airport. they were all getting on their connecting flights from San Diego. there were two or three other guys that i did not recognize...

and in 2007 i saw Mack Brown at the airport in Austin.

After the TCu game last year we were walking back to our car and came upon Jamaal Charles walking with I guess his mother with an icepack on his shoulder. I just shoook his hand and told him great game and good luck this year

I am pretty sure I had Tony Bracken's sloppy seconds in college.
I was dating this So Ho who had told me she was "friends" with him. Well, one day I am in her room and she plays her messages and one of them says "Hey <name redacted>, This Tony! Call me back!"
He sounded large and angry, and I was scared of being concussed over the answering machine.
So I guess if that saying is true, then I may have had sex with Tony Brackens by proxy.... And I am not sure how I should feel about that...

* Was in English class with Stoney Clark (the OL / poet).

* Played pickup basketball a few times with Taje Allen.

* Discussed the recruitment of Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley with David McWilliams at a church Easter brunch.

PanzerDSS and I both have autographed posters from Derrick Johnson that a friend got for us. We had this inside joke where basically DJ did all those things Chuck Norris is purported to do (i.e. writing the Constitution, going back in time and winning the Battle of the Alamo etc.) Anyway, we got these posters and the signatures both say this:

"Remeber [sic] the Alamo, #11 Derrick Johnson"

It's framed in a prominent place on my wall right now.

I'm going to be by Barton Creek mall this summer. If not for the fact that I just got me some Kevin Durant's, I'd ask for the make and model of your shoes. I got 2 autographed DJ jerseys. He's allsome.

And I got this...

You should have said: "Remember when you used to play for Texas and you would punch the ball out of running backs arms from behind?... That was awesome!"

First, the title of this thread does not convey the topic.
My son played on a summer all-star 8th grade baseball team with James Street and Brad Buckman. He was one of the pitchers. Brad hit many many homeruns, the team lost only one game.

I was surprised when my son came home from an Austin High vs Westlake game his junior year saying that even though Brad Buckman scored over 30 points for Westlake, AHS won the game. I was surprised to learn that Brad was into basketball rather than baseball.

Anyway it was great to be in the stands with James Street at all the games and some of the practices.

I have you all beat.

In the fall of 2005, I was at Dave & Buster's near the Arboretum on a Saturday night to dine with some friends. It was Texas' bye week. Lo and behold, in walks a family of about 8 people including a guy who looked about 7 feet tall. It was Superman himself. After he finished eating, he walked up to the bar to watch the USC/Fresno St. game; recall that USC struggled mightily in that game. I'm not shy at all, so I grabbed the barstool next to him. We talked for a while, I congratulated him on a great season thus far. USC ended up winning. I said something to the effect that USC was good but sure looked beatable. He smiled and went "Oh, yeah."
