Dennis Dodd's Pre-Spring Top 10

Texas doesn't have a problem being ranked in the Top 10 only to end up in the Alamo or Holiday Bowl.

As a Tech fan, I never said that the Pac 10 sucks. I was just responding to a poster who said that Tech is a crappy program that is not correct. It is true that nobody wants to play a home and home with Tech. The reason... look at the home and home with UT and Ohio State or games between of the elite schools. If any of those teams loses to each other it is not that big of a deal. An elite team lost to another elite team, most probably on the road, it most likely would not kill their national championship hopes.

If an elite team goes into Lubbock as a favorite, a notiously difficult place to play especially at night and gets embarrassed, that pretty much ruins their national championship hopes. If they win, big deal, they were suppsed to.

With Tech's offense, most out of conference teams do not want to waste time in preparing for it and also take the risk of facing an offense that when is hot, is very difficult to stop. That means score 45+ to win and with limited turnovers. Now if Tech is playing an elite that is hitting on all cylinders like with what has been experienced with UT the past few years, it is near impossible to get a win due to the talent differential.

With most teams, the risk versus reward of playing Tech is not worth it. They would rather schedule another elite or pay a patsy to come in for a one-way money game.

I just have two words for the Soviet SC fan......Vince Young. Yes I have been in CA for 14 years and was at the Rose Bowl. Arrogant SC fans could not imagine they'd lose to TEXAS. I loved seeing the sour faces after the game. It still hurts them when I bring it up. I live in PAC-10 country and they suck. The are lucky they play a "round robin" and don't have to earn their way to the championship like all the other major conferences save the Big 10, er 11. Whatever. Every year there is a total pretender from the PAC-10, take your pick Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Wazzu, AZ St. who gets by until they have to play SC. then they lose 2 or 3 in a row. It says a lot that the Pac 10 #2 plays the Big 12 #3 in the Holiday Bowl.

Hornfans.com is the only message board in the country that considers texas tech a top knotch football program.

Im not sure if you guys realized this...but did you guys know that they beat California back in the 2004 season?

I swear its going to be 2010 and people will still be referencing the 2004 Holliday Bowl.

Only because it was such a STFU Lil' ******* moment. I was living in the Bay Area when Texas got the nod and for WEEKS every phone call was Cal fans bitching about how the deserved this and deserved that. Posts all over this board bitching about Mack lobbying for his team, The awesome BCS posts here explaining and showing Cal did not deserve the RB. Then when it was time to show that Cal did derserve it little brother

Went in and put an back handed Hoe slap that will be heard- till 2010 and beyond.

Nobody said Tech was a top notch football program. I am a Texas Tech fan and was just responding to someone that posted that Tech sucks. I reminded them that Tech donkey punched the favored bears and is not scared of anybody in the Pac 10 and could beat everyone except USC.

Tech is a top 25 program and a solid second tier team that can win versus the elites in certain years and be competitive every year. Of course the goal is to beat UT & OU every year but that is pretty difficult to accomplish when they have everything in their favor in terms of money, tradition, recruiting, etc.

I think Tech's goals within the athletic department are to go to a bowl every year and be competitive and win the Big 12 every 4 years. Obviously Tech is still trying to achieve this but it is not easy to accomplish in a conference that is very football focused and with a lot of big budgets.

That was a nice win for Texas Tech but it was in 2004. One game is not indicative of a team's dominance of a conference or how they would do in that conference.

-Texas Tech is not a top 25 program. Top 25 programs finish in the top 25 annually, not 3 times in 12 years.

-Texas Tech would not beat everyone in the Pac-10 not named USC. They would be a middle of the road Pac-10 team. They're just like a typical Pac-10 team, great offense, ****** defense.

-You guys will succeed in half your athletic department's goals by going to a bowl game every year. It's not difficult when you play the weakest OOC schedule in college football. That's 4 guaranteed wins right there. All you need to do is win 2 conference games and you are bowl eligible! So congrats on making a bowl game every year. However TT is a miserable failure as far as winning a Big 12 Title, looking over this decade, Tech hasn't even competed for a Big 12 title, they haven't even been in the hunt for one towards the end of the year.

-Texas Tech is not second tier either. Average program at best.

-next year's non conference slate features 2 division 1-AA teams yet again. Wow, Eastern Washington, Nevada, SMU, UMASS. Red Raiders why don't you guys just move down to 1-AA? Congrats on the 4-0 start, I'm sure TT will put up crazy good offensive numbers and we will hear how great top 10 TT is.

You keep talking about scheduling. Are you that stupid? How do you get to the BCS? Do you have a better shot with a better record? As KU almost showed last year, if you have a good conference, your schedule strength will be fine.

Mack has stated as long as he is around, he would not schedule any more Ohio St type teams.

There is little to gain, you can whine about schedule strength all you want but the MNC is the team without losses.

Saying that Tech isn't even second-tier is just as ridiculous as saying they're first-tier.

How come bringing up a Holiday Bowl from 3 years ago is "old news", but bringing up 12 years ago Tech not finishing in the top 25 is relevant?

Tech is getting better. Its hard to say they are now a top 25 program because as pointed out they don't have the history. I think they are close though moving forward.

Again, I am not saying Tech is an elite program. I am merely sayin that it has a good program that is now a top 25 team. Regarding bowl performance, there are a lot of teams that would like to have Tech recent bowl record. Wins versus the ACC twice including a massacre of Clemson, Big 10 & whipping the Pac 10 plus Navy. Tech lost a tough game versus a very good Bama defense on a last second field goal.

I agree that over its history, Tech is not a national power. Right now it is and this year Tech would whip any team in the Pac 10 outside of USC. Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Zona, Arizona State, Washington, Washington State, UCLA would all get their arses handed to them by Tech THIS year.

Regarding its schedule, Tech was going to play a solid Tulsa team but they backed out at the last minute to play Arky because it was an easier game. Read my posts above... not a lot of teams do not want to play Tech with a home and home in non-conference because the risk versus reward is not good.

Agree with malageno-TT has been a good team since Leach got there and have gained a lot of respect in the Big 12. I am a UT fan, but I sure don't like going to Lubbock every other year. They are a very dangerous one game team. They aren't likely to go 11-1, but if you catch them on "their" day its your ***. They have just drilled some bowl teams that aren't used to playing against that offense. This year they are really going to be good because all the O is back and an improved D. They do have a hard time scheduling high profile teams to a home and home.

If anybody can even stay on the field with TEXAS next year, I'll be damned surprised.

I expect most of them to quit and stay in the locker room at half time.

How'd you like to get your *** knocked into the middle of Midland on every snap of the ball? This team is going to be illegal.

Texas No. 1 right thru Oct, Nov and Dec and cap it off in January.

During that same time Oregon, Cal, Zona and ASU have had losing records with bowl appearances. Something Tech has not done. Again, look at Tech's recent bowl appearances with wins over the ACC twice, Pac 10, Big 10 and a narrow loss to a good Bama team. If Tech sucked so bad like the Pac 10 crybabies said, they should have lost those games. Clemson, Virginia, Alabama, Minnesota, Cal and Navy are not bad teams but why let logic into the argument.

yeah Minnesota great team hahahaha

Virginia was a good one, and Cal too.

Navy? lol

a .500 Clemson team?

a close loss to Alabama? (nice moral victory there)

so what we have here is...

-65-37 record with the current head coach and that includes 3-4 games each year of the weakest competition a Division 1-A team can face. Maybe you will play 4 1-AA teams in the future for your OOC?

- 3 times finished ranked this decade

- big bowl wins over .500 teams like Minnesota and Clemson with some good bowls over UVA and Cal, overall 5-3 bowl record under the current coach.

-never come close to competing seriously for a conference title

-a bowl loss you seem to be proud of

all that equals average program at best, not just below the elites.

we said you would be middle of the road Pac-10 and that's exactly correct. TT = typical Pac-10 team, all offense and no defense

I can't wait until next season when you guys are 4-0 with wins over East Washington, Massachusetts, Nevada, and SMU with an average of 70 point scored per game and we'll hear how great the Red Raiders are.

Beating those teams by 70 says a lot more on a resume then dropping one to a similar team, say Stanford.

I wonder how long Georgia stays on top given their SEC schedule.

UT goes to Lubbock this coming season, and I guarantee you, there will not be a t-sip anywhere that won't be sweating that game as much or more than any on the schedule.
