Defense is good!

If u would have told me at the beginning of the season that we would hold our first 2 opponents scoreless in the 2nd half and 10 and 13 points with our young secondary...sign me up!

Granted we could be better, but for an awfully young secondary they are playing very very well and remember only going to get better.

The thing about the D is that UTEP did a great job of not turning the ball over. Turnover swing a lot of the momentum and UTEP had great ball security until the end but I will take 13 points especially with the amount of time UTEP was on the field.

utep turned the ball over twice that i can think of. one was a interception Palmer that we ended up getting a touchdown out of. the other was the fumble caused by Sam Acho, returned for a touchdown by Muckelroy. did you watch the game?
Palmer also almost had another interception late in the game.

I'm guessing we watched a different game. We have a lot of growing to do but..we can get there..

I think any haters at this point on the D won't ever be pleased by anything. It's not realistic to think our freshmen safeties are going to be perfect. I saw a lot of positive things-turnover, pressure, sack(s), a shutout in the second half and an overall score of 13 against the D? Gimmie a break. Our D is aggressive, talented and makes necessary adjustments.

The D was sporadic. They definitely have the potential. Rak was held on 75% of the plays. The front line needs to get their hands up on the pass D and knock down some passes. I give the D a grade of C tonight. I agree that our run defense didn't show up at times.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that maybe....just maybe.....Muschamp has not shown everything just yet, despite us playing 2 very close games against powerhouses.....

I give the D some credit for only giving up 13 points and forcing turnovers. With the young secondary, giving up yardage and big plays was not entirely unexpected. I hope they learn and improve quickly, though, or October is shaping up to be a really long month.

What I found really inexcusable was the fact that our whole team came out flat in the third quarter. We should have put the pedal to the metal and put UTEP away. Instead, we farted around for a while and let them hang around. Our O-line seemed to have a lot of trouble getting a push against the UTEP D-line, which was surprising compared to last week.

A fair effort -- not great, but not horrible. Definitely some troubling things that need to be addressed.

EDIT: some of you calling out Muschamp need to take a chill pill. We're only two games into the season.

I agree with Pentaconta about the 3rd quarter. But the third quarter was really on the O and not so much the D. The D did well all second half.

Muschamp may not be showing everything. It is just me or does anyone else find it strange how we've given up 2 tds with seconds to go left in the 1st half. Apart from those letdowns we've givng up 9 points these two first games.

Rex....I think the issue is that you acknowledge that we have a young secondary (with one senior who...well....is not Jammer/Ross/Griffin). That makes up 1/3rd of your defense. You notice this but yet you say you arent impressed AT ALL with a defense that has given up 23 points and zero of those in the second half.

I don't think anyone will argue with you that we want to see more "BOOM' from the defense but it's a work in progress. Muschamp is not inheriting the experience that Chizik did when he took over. There have been moments where I say 'man...I wish the defense looked better" but I realize it is a work in progress and I think we've gotten the best we can ask for at this point in time.

I was happy with the points allowed and especially the 2 shutouts in the 2nd halfs. But going up way too many passing yards still. We know this is b/c of a young secondary and playing against experienced QB's, but man they are just getting eaten up out there.

The lack of coverage is costing the DL a chance at sacks or better pressures.

Too many big plays given up up on 1st and 2nd down.

2 turnovers forced was a step up from last week but still only 2 turnovers on the season so far.

Eddie Jones, Sam Acho, E. Acho, Orakpo all looked very good. Anybody check out Muck's stat line? 14 tackles and 1 FR for a TD.

Are we seeing as much nickel as we though we would preseason?

Eh..I'll take these results of having such a pathetic, horrible d-coach any day.

Giving up yards doesn't matter to me at all...giving up points does. And so far we've been dominant in the 2nd half and pretty damn good in the first half. Boom ************ is doing a good job.

I guess we should go back to what we had last year when we almost lost to the first two schools we played. Obviously there's been no improvement.

Our Rush D was pathetic. Jackson had what, 7 YPC? The thing that sucked about it was the D-line was actually getting a great push. We just kept missing tackles in the backfield and we weren't playing disciplined in the gaps.

We cannot keep giving opponents points at the end of the half. I'm not sure what it is, but our 2 minute defense doesn't do ANYTHING well.

I think our problems are fixable, the Rush D was great in the first game and maybe the coaches slacked on it a little in practice. We were just a bit over aggressive, but the ability to dominate the LOS was clearly evident.

I don't know about that. They just had a mobile QB, actually a couple of mobile QB's, that our defense had a hard time bringing down once they got into the backfield.
