Dancing With The Stars.....

I read this thread every week because I can't watch the show. And I can't DVR it because my dear, sweet husband hogs the DVR with HIS shows just about every night.

So I check in to see what's happening and learn who is leaving.

Thanks, Fast Fred, for doing me this service.

This was <flames>"ROCK WEEK"<flames> on "Dancing With The Stars."

Rave on.

The competition tonight was each remaining couple dancing either a Tango or a Paso Doble to a rock song.

Then, at the end of the show, there was a dance marathon of four minute's duration wherein couples would be tapped out, just like in that movie "They Shoot Horses Don't They?," until the bestest couple is the onliest couple left on the floor.

You could possibly get 30 points maximum, as usual, awarded in the individual couples' dances and 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, or 4 points depending on how long your horse lasted in the marathon.

And they were off.

Audrina & Tony started things with a Paso Doble to Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust," getting 24 out of the possible 30 points available. Again this partnership was pretty harshly critiqued by the judges for not having enough sexual chemistry in their dances. But they still got three big eights even though the judges all said they expected and wanted more performance passion between handsome Tony and the lovely star of "The Hills." The couple also got another 8 points in the closing dance marathon for a total of 32 and second place tonight, overall.

Kyle & Lacey performed a Tango to Adam Lambert's "If I Had You" for an appreciatively adjudicated 23 points. Their traditional Tango was their forced response to what the judges had been telling them, because this young-thinking, young couple had been mixing the required dance styles with unrequired Disco, Hip Hop and comedy moves. The wise panel of three liked their performance OK and rated them back up amongst the leaders. In the dance marathon they took a 7 for a total of 30.

Jennifer & Derek only barely made it through a Paso Doble danced to Pink's "So What," receiving their harshest judicial rebukes thus far and their lowest score ever, a 20. It was the second lowest dance routine score given tonight, largely because the choreography was just too difficult for Jennifer (blame Derek) and she didn't and, perhaps, couldn't pull it off. They strongly rebounded in the marathon at the end with a 9 for a 29 point total, but still finished this evening third from the bottom.

Rick & Cheryl performed a Tango to The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," a '60s British Invasion classic later covered by Van Halen. They got a 24. This aggressive, almost Flamenco sounding, song would have been even better music for a Paso Doble, IMHO, but the judges liked what they saw, ranking the tall hoopster's stylish dance far above what fellow athlete Kurt did later. Rick should thank his cogent pro partner Cheryl for designing him a doable routine emphasizing dance moves which made his imposing stature look good. They later marathoned to a 6, and I thought maybe they deserved even one more point in that elimination dance. And they totaled 30 points to tie for third place tonight.

Bristol & Mark very wisely chose or were very, very fortunate to be given Orianthe's "According To You" and they fiercely tangoed their way to 23 very, very, very welcome points. This song's searing lyric echoes characterizations of herself Bristol's been targeted with since before the show began: "According to you, I'm stupid, I'm useless, I can't do anything right,.....I'm moody, I'm boring,.....I suck...." Miss Palin definitely seemed to react to these fighting words and gave her best, most focused, inspired and emotional performance yet, earning her highest judges' score thus far and a point total of 28 after the marathon. I thought Bristol did rather well and, most importantly, she wasn't the worst dancer this night.

Kurt & Anna offered a Paso Doble to Europe's "The Final Countdown" and received an abyssmal score that counted up to only 18. The athletic former QB, who moved and portrayed his TV character so cleverly and well last week while doing a Quick Step to the "Theme from Bewitched," sorely lacked musicality and dance technique tonight and the routine received this evening's lowest scores from the suddenly again harshly critical, unforgiving triumvirate of judges. We thought that perhaps dark gloves added to his costume might have helped hide Warner's enormous, "frying pan sized" hands. Kurt and Anna received just 4 additional points, the lowest score possible, from the dance marathon. So, this couple was relegated to the very bottom this week and perhaps are even counted out with a combined score of only 22.

Brandy & Maks gave us a Tango to Bonnie Tyler's "I Need A Hero" and received 26 points from the impressed judges. At first, I thought this song was simply going to be too fast tempoed for this dance style, but I was so wrong because the quickly improving couple nailed it. It was very different from the wonderful, more traditional Argentine Tango which Jennifer and Derek did a couple of weeks back to the perfect, more traditional Tango song, "La Cumparsita." But this was <flames>"ROCK WEEK"<flames> on "Dancing With The Stars" and their rapid, raging routine to rousing, rocking music thematically and technique-wise almost completely blotted out what every other couple had to offer this evening. They won the dance marathon too, making it a total eclipse for them and nothing but a heartache for all the rest, getting both event's highest scores and thereby gathering together a very impressive combined 36 out of the possible 40 points.

So it ended up:

Brandy & Maks - 36
Audrina & Tony - 32
Rick & Cheryl - 30
Kyle & Lacey - 30
Jennifer & Derek - 29
Bristol & Mark - 28
Kurt & Anna - 22

I've decided they could begin doing two things for me to improve this entertaining show.

First, please announce the song title when they introduce each dance.

"Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas doing the Jive to "The Monkee's Theme."

I spent an hour googling up two of the rock tunes I didn't recognize.

And, secondly, whenever there's a dance marathon, if all they show are close ups, viewers can't really compare the action that's going on all over the floor.

Please let me see the big picture.

JMO.

I think Bristol's stronger performance tonight and her apparently loyal call in support will keep her safe from elimination for another week.

However, I predict Kurt and Anna will be gone after tonight's ratings revelation, even though she's my very favorite DWTS pro to watch and despite how nicely Warner so clearly embodied the athletic dancing vibe of the great Gene Kelly, just last week.

We'll see.

smile.gif

Thoughts?

kind of an interesting elimination with arguably the two best teams up for elimination. not sure how much weight goes to the call in people but i find it hard toi believe that the couple that finished second would get eliminated. kurt and bristol must have massive call in support. must be the God squad. kind of sucks.

This was Dancing With The Stars' 200th Show.

Lots of stars from past seasons in the audience and even participating on the show.

Two dances from each of the remaining six celebrity stars tonight.

First there were two team Cha Chas with Rick, Kyle and Bristol and their pros dancing to Michael Jackson's "Workin' Day And Night" from his 1979 album "Off The Wall" for 24 points apiece out of a possible 30, and then Jennifer, Brandy, Kurt and their partners being awarded 27, for each couple, after their team routine to Young MC's "Bust A Move."

Next, for each competing couple's individual dance, they reinterpreted an earlier performance that had been voted as being the best from previous seasons.

The star celebrity who had performed that dance style first to that same music returned to sit and serve as a guest judge and could award up to 10 points.

Kyle Massey & Lacey led off with a very decent Paso Doble to En Vogue's "Free Your Mind," inspired by a routine that pop singer Mel B and Maks Chmerkovskiy had previously done. The four judges said it was Kyle's best dance yet, but only gave 35 out of a possible 40 points. Guest judge Mel B didn't mind freely giving them a 10, but the other three judgemental "asses" didn't follow as the music had advised.

Kurt Warner & Anna came back strong from last week's lowest score, reimagining footballer Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke's Tango to Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible," but they just got a 34. I think Kurt has done very well, but I'm afraid this couple, especially, will be in constant jeopardy now, until they're finally eliminated.

Bristol Palin & Mark performed a lovely Waltz to Ray LaMontagne's soulful "Trouble." Ozzy's daughter Kelly Osbourne & Louis van Amstel had waltzed to this song in an earlier season. Miss Palin and her partner received polite personal praise for her positive performance progress, but only 33 paltry points. I think, she should be gone after tonight, unless her call in crowd really wants to see her being the worst dancer again next week.

Rick Fox & Cheryl Quick Stepped to Royal Crown Revue's "Hey Pachuco!" from "The Mask" for 37 points. Tall, fast-footed Rick in a great costume was channeling the slim, stylish vibe of Fred Astaire in his dancing and almost out hamming movie star Jim Carrey with his facial expressions. Indycar driver Helio Castroneves & Julianne Hough had done the original version of this routine. It's worth noting that Cheryl Burke had choreographed three of the six dance performances that were voted worthy of reinterpretation on this show and she helped make Rick look really great tonight. They would have tied for this evening's overall lead, but for the team dance.

Brandy & Maks made the whole room sizzle with their erotic Fox Trot to Peggy Lee's "Fever." That fox was so hot to trot, we at home could feel the heat coming through our TV. But what a lovely way to burn with a top matching score of 37. They even may have put "Sex and the City" actor Gilles Marini & Cheryl Burke's earlier, but still smoking, performance on the back burner. Brandy's been at or tied for the lead for several weeks now and is dancing like a finalist.

Jennifer & Derek did an excellent Tango to the Black Eyed Peas' "Shut Up" for their 37 points also, trying very hard to shut up those who've been suggesting that maybe Baby's been put in a corner. Baby still looks like a finalist to me, unless the gods do her dancing dirty with an bodily injury or a physical breakdown. 98 Degrees member Drew Lachey and Cheryl Burke had done their dance to this song back in DWTS second season.

This entertaining episode of this long running, immensely popular show, featuring dance music and styles which had been successfully matched up before, unsurprisingly had the best overall dancing to the best overall music yet, IMHO.

So tonight, it ended up:

Brandy and Maks - 64, out of a possible 70 points.
Jennifer and Derek - 64.
Rick and Cheryl - 61.
Kurt and Anna - 61.
Kyle and Lacey - 59.
Bristol and Mark - 57.

I think Brandy, Jennifer and Rick, so far, deserve to be the three in the finals. But I also believe the call ins are gonna call it, this season probably even more than the judges are gonna judge it.

I believe that Bristol, as the worst dancer left, fairly deserves to be eliminated. But I also suspect Miss Palin, along with Kyle, has call in support so loyal that any of the politicians in today's mid-term election would kill for it.

I'm gonna guess that Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya will feel the strength of Bristol and Kyle's on going support and predict the former NFL QB and my favorite Russian born red head will get the ax.

We'll see.

I hope I'm wrong; it just depends on how big this very important election's voter turnout is.

smile.gif

Rick Fox and Cheryl Burke are gone.

I predicted that Bristol and Kyle would be saved this week by their strong call in support.

So that didn't surprise me.

My surprise is that Kurt had enough call in support to eliminate Rick, even though Fox had higher judges' scores.

I haven't minded, or particularly felt a need to take much notice of, the call in aspect of the show before, but it's really been in play over the last few weeks.

And I'd rather DWTS be more of a dance competition and less of a popularity contest.

I suspect that the creative minds behind the show, the three judges, the pro dancers and the two hosts are more than a little concerned about the concept of their show not being safe, but in jeopardy.

If dance performance is too often rewarded less than call in performance, the entertainment value of the show suffers, IMHO.

To put it simply, I'd be more entertained seeing Rick willingly dance next week, trying hard to improve, instead of painfully watching tearful, put upon Bristol still failing to cope and being forced to struggle on.

Miss Palin has been sufficiently praised for her pluck, her persistence and her improvement.

However, I think Rick Fox danced a lot better.

We'll see.

i always thought the judges scores carried a lot of weight because in the past, the best dancers always advanced. not so this season. its turned into american idol.

In this Week 8, five couples are left and three of those couples will make it to the finals, if it's handled the usual way.

Tonight the format was each star/pro pair first performed the dance routine they'd worked on for a week.

Then, each couple had to prepare another routine quickly and dance it before the show ended.

The couples had already been told what dance style they'd be performing in their "instant dance," but each terpsichorean team drew a CD of their new dance music from a bowl right after receiving their first dance scores.

Then they went off to a practice studio to listen to the music for the first time and work up their choreography.

This was the first time the instant dance gimmick had been tried on the show and it worked pretty well, with good music and some entertaining routines.

yippee.gif

Kyle and Lacey's first dance (their previously prepared one) was an elegant Waltz to Anna Nalick's "Breathe." The trio of judges praised this youngest competitive couple for attentively listening to all their constructive criticism, working on what needed to be worked on and showing consistent, weekly improvement. They got three 8s, for 24 out of a possible 30 points.

Later, they did an energetic Jive to Little Richard's "Good Golly, Miss Molly." Kyle danced well. He mirrored all the quick, co-ordinated dance moves that Lacey did and never missed a step, scoring a 29. Given the competition that's left, Kyle looks like a finalist to us.

Kyle and Lacey said they'd never heard Little Richard's song before

Someone should probably explain to them that the second line of the lyric, where it mentions that Miss Molly "sure likes to ball," doesn't mean she digs ballroom dancing.

Jennifer and Derek did a stylish Quick Step to Irving Berlin's classic "Let's Face the Music and Dance," a song which Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Nat "King" Cole and Diana Krall have all covered. I remember in "Pennies From Heaven " when Steve Martin lip-synced to the vocal of this song which Fred Astaire sung to dance partner Ginger Rogers in "Follow the Fleet." Entertainer Joel Grey watched team "Jennhoughfer" (according to the printing on Derek's shirt) practice and encouraged his daughter to face the challenge of painful tendonitis around her kneecap and dance on. After whining awhile, she did just that and got 27 points

Their "instant dance" was a sensuous Rhumba to Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You." The three impressed judges said their offering was "erotic," "breathtaking," "flawless, great dancing" and worth a perfect score of 30 points. We at home agreed and expect to see this couple in the finals.

Kurt and Anna performed a pretty, swooping Waltz to The Eagles' "Take It To The Limit." The big footballer is a willing student, but he lacks grace, technique, smoothness and musicality. Kurt and Anna received 24 points.

In what I fear was probably their final or, at the very most, their next to last performance, Anna and the NFL QB did a Cha Cha to No Doubt's "Hella Good" for 24 points. I suspect that Bristol has enough misguided, IMHO, call in support to keep on dancing, as that song's lyric says, although I have no doubt, personally, that Kurt is the better dancer.

Bristol and Mark did a slightly sexy Tango to The Pussycat Dolls' "Loosen Up My Buttons." Miss Palin gamely emulated Pussycat Doll singer/dancer and last season's DWTS winner Nicole Scherzinger, perhaps as closely as an "innocent and inexperienced" (?) home girl from Alaska could or should.

Indeed, Bristol could probably earn her keep as either a lap dancer or a husband pleasing wife, when those cold winters back home could use some womanly warmth, if Miss Palin actually loosened up her buttons. Giving us a brief glimpse of dance intensity, before her mind appeared to wander, she received 24 points.

Their "instant dance" was a dreadful Samba to Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66's excellent signature song "Mas Que Nada" which received an overly generous award of 23 points. This was very deservedly the lowest score of the night. I've enjoyed this song as an original from Brazilian performer Jorge Ben, from South African singer/human rights activist Miriam Makeba and from American jazz vocalizer/scat singer Al Jarreau, plus a more recent, really cool, hip hop/gangsta rap/traditional mash up version from The Black Eyed Peas and Sergio Mendes himself.

What the Portuguese phrase "mas que nada," when used as Brazilian slang, translates to in English is something akin to the American pejorative put down that can serve as an instant comment about this couple's Samba dance routine: "No way, Jose."

Poor Bristol was as completely lost as she's always been during any dance wherein pro partner Mark didn't firmly hold her in his arms and physically lead her around the floor. Bristol's lack of dance performance ability should have already eliminated her before any of Florence, Audrina and/or Rick heard their name called, IMO. But her phone in supporters could well save her again this week. And I believe they probably will.

Brandy and Maks performed, in the judges' words, an "emotional," "beautiful," "overwhelming" and "spell binding" three step, costumed in all white, to Hayley Westenra's "Dark Waltz" from "The Phantom of the Opera" and received an almost perfect 29 points. We thought, perhaps, another 30 point score was coming, but no.

Their Cha Cha to Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" was poorly choreographed, however, and lacked dance content according to the three adjudicating experts. My wife and I agreed and were a bit surprised when their subpar performance received as many points as it did, at 28. Still, we fully expect Brandy will join Jennifer and Kyle in the finals with only the two girls getting to dance for the mirror ball trophy on the last night, after Kyle is eliminated at that show's beginning, as is customary, without a final dance.

So, here are the point totals for this show:

Jennifer and Derek - 57
Brandy and Maks - 57
Kyle and Lacey - 53
Kurt and Anna - 48
Bristol and Mark - 47

I predict Kurt is next to go, even though I think Bristol's elimination is long overdue.

Call in support has already skewed and even screwed this season's results more than expected.

And if Bristol does indeed survive for another week, she'll be dancing for a spot in The Finals.

WTF???

We'll see.

Your thoughts?

cool.gif

Kurt is gone.

Bristol is now in the semifinals and will be dancing next Monday for a place as one of the three finalists.

WTF???

I'll miss Kurt's pro dance partner, Anna.

She's my favorite to watch.

Lacey's the only female pro dancer left, so the eye candy enjoyment factor for male viewers has taken a big hit.

I think Bristol's call in supporters will really be dedicated now to voting her into the finals.

whiteflag.gif

There must be a machine phoning in bristol votes. This has become a joke although she has gotten better. she could barely move when this thing started.

I think Jennifer and Brandy are the best dancers left.

But, I believe Kyle and Bristol's call in support will send them with Jennifer to the finals.

I predict that Brandy goes home tonight.

Whatever.

We'll see.

smile.gif

And you were right Fred. Sad to see Brandy go. Thanks for your updates, it's been fun to read and then move quickly through the recording of the show.

This was Night One of The Finals.

First came a Redemption Round when the three judges chose what dance style they wanted each couple to perform..

They picked the dance style that each couple had the most trouble with on an earlier show, when they'd received their lowest score.

I don't know how the music was picked and/or handed out for this round.

Kyle and Lacey opened with a Fox Trot to Michael Buble's "Feeling Good" and the Disney star was duly recognized for his improvement in footwork technique. Partner Lacey should get equal credit using more traditional choreography than she employed on their earlier routine in this dance style. They got three nines for a 27.

Bristol and Mark came next doing a rather slow tempoed Jive, probably to accomodate her sluggish feet, to "Move" from "Dreamgirls." She was justly praised for her improvement over her earlier gorilla suit jiving disaster. Surprisingly to me, they also got three 9s for a 27. Bristol did OK, but she had lazy footwork and, if Kyle deserved 9s, IMHO, Miss Palin only rated 7s or 8s or even lower.

Jennifer and Derek did a really good Paso Doble to the perfect music of "Habanera" from Bizet's opera "Carmen," which completely redeemed her poor performance earlier in this dance style. It was judged as a "lovely mix of expression and aggression" that was "fantastic" with "flames of passion" and it garnered three 10s for a perfect 30.

Next came the Free Style Round, wherein each couple chose the style they danced and also picked the music they wanted.

Kyle and Lacey chose to perform a Hip Hop routine to "Tootsie Roll" by 69 Boyz. Kyle allowed that this was his favorite song ever and he and Lacey did a strenuous, exhuberant routine which left young Massey exhausted. Judge Len cluelessly termed it "boogaloo dancing." However, the three evaluators agreed it was "great fun," "completely entertaining" and "charismatic." Carrie Ann and Bruno both awarded 10s and Len gave 9 for a total of 29. I thought it was easily the best of the three free style dances and should have received the highest score. Kyle nailed it, deftly and and definitively mirroring every dance move that his pro partner made.

Bristol and Mark tried to answer, dancing to "Cell Block Tango" from "Chicago" which is also known as "He Had It Coming." Pro partner Mark made an ambitous attempt here at using memorable music, but we thought he made a poor choice for Bristol since she'd never heard the song and had seen neither the Broadway show nor the movie. She's had trouble all season focusing in on her dance character during every routine and we think this unfamiliar song hurt her interpretation here. It certainly didn't help. The judges gave them the lowest score of the evening, citing how Bristol did alright considering where she started in this competition, but how her performance didn't live up to what's expected when you dance to this iconic song. She got two 8s and a 9 for 25, pretty generous, points.

Jennifer and Derek performed a jumping Jive to "Do You Love Me" by The Contours which was notably featured in her movie "Dirty Dancing." I had thought she might dance to The Righteous Brother Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes' "I've Had The Time Of My Life," which was the great final dance number in that motion picture. Using that song, she and Derek could have quickly and completely shown off her show stopping talent, his winning choreography and their stunning mastery of several dance styles: Fox Trot, Quick Step and even several Latin styles, but Baby didn't want to be cornered into using that music. I thought it was truly and sadly a missed opportunity.

Listen to the song and imagine the dance that could have been:

The Link

The only problem, other than Jennifer's personal preference, I can see is that the song would have to have been shortened so much to fit into the time allowed.

If Jennifer loses (as she well may) I'll point to this song choice, although I dig The Contours' big 1962 One Hit Wonder from early MoTown (which Berry Gordy wrote himself and intended for The Temptations to record) a lot, and this "sin of omission" will be a main reason I won't care if she's eliminated.

smile.gif

When Brooke Burke asked, Jennifer said that "Time Of My Life" was her final dance with Patrick Swayze and she wanted to do something different.

I thought that Jennifer's choice about the music and Derek's difficult, acrobatic (but footwork poor) choreography might really put Baby a in corner.

Because, the lively Jive routine that Derek cogitated up was chock full of terpsichorean tricks and lifts and such tricks which toss her around aren't Jennifer's strongest suit.

I thought their free style routine suffered for its lack of dance content, especially compared to what I believe they could and should have done. But, what do I know?

The judges again awarded them with three perfect 10s for another perfect score of 30.

I would have rewarded them with considerably less.

Totals for tonight:

Jennifer and Derek got 60 out of a possible 60.

Kyle and Lacey followed with 56.

Bristol and Mark trailed with 52.

I think Kyle and Jennifer, as the two best dancers left now and the most promising male and female dancers from the very start, deserve to vie for the coveted mirror ball trophy and that Bristol the Pistol should finally be shot down and eliminated.

I simply have no idea or prediction about which of the three is going to win now.

I will make a wild guess, however, that if Bristol Palin would hurry over to "Skating With The Stars," she'd probably start off better there as an ice skater than she did as a ballroom dancer.

Her amazing phone bank of supporters could probably even vote her onto that new show as a late arriving, call in contestant.

cool.gif

What do you think?

I like Derek Hough, but I do not want to see him win again. Who is his partner going to be next time -- Paula Abdul?

is dancing with the stars really so important to you that you have to issue death threats and send talcum powder filled envelopes to bristol palin? Or, is this a ploy by abc to increase ratings?
The Link

I really would like to see what Derek could come up with in choreographing a routine for he and Bristol.

Derek received 10's last night as he was the only one dancing.... Jenifer just happened to be there for the ride.

It's a shame how Bristol has been dogged all season because Mark has come up with several totally lame routines that have only magnified Bristol's shortcomings.
