Dalton Santos

Anyone have insight on why we didn't go after Dalton Santos? He's the #1 ILB in the country and from Texas. He's a verbal to Tennessee (the other UT) and didn't even get an offer from us. Nothing against De La Torre, but if ILB was a need, why go after the #11 ILB and not the #1? Mack usually has good reasons, so wondering who had the scoop.

IIRC, it's a basic case of falling thru the cracks... Santos grew up a Longhorn fan and between the Muschamp to Diaz changeover, Santos never got a sniff from any of the coaches, especially the area recruiter which was Searels. By the time Diaz got wind of the situation (April/May time frame), Diaz still made a visit to Van and apologized for the oversight & to see if there was anything he could do, but Santos had pretty much had moved on. I believe Santos committed to Tennessee in the early part of the summer...

Actually, didn't he commit, or seriously consider committing to, aggy before picking Tennessee? I remember the ags being pretty surprised (pissed) when he picked the other UT.

he did consider it but indicated that he thought he'd be a better fit in the SEC (before our move)

after we moved, i think he'd lost all interest in A&M.

i dont think he ends up at tenn. i think he ends up at arky.

If you wanted to go to the SEC why go to hog wallow instead of a team that knows how to construct a defense? Arkansas seems very similar to Oklahoma State, great offense mediocre defense.

Moving to the $EC... you're kidding? Going to the $EC is supposed to bring in recruits, not make them go look at other $EC schools!

If that's the case, you may want to convert to the Burnt Orange side...

point being by that time i think he'd just lost interest in A&M for one reason or another.

not really sure why. more power to him.

maybe we'll press him again now that we're moving to a 4-3, but who knows. i think he's going to grow out of the LB spot pretty quickly.

we went after narduzzi at michigan state, but got rebuffed. next on the list is likely chris wilson, DC at miss. st.

i feel fairly confident that we will be a 4-3 team next year. i believe sumlin prefers it that way.

he was co DC with diaz, and was the only DC this year.

he's one of the folks we're considering. another is the DC at cal...and liucci seems to think there is one other person in the running.

dont care who it is. just ready to get them on board.

Prop Joe. Interested on your take on Dat not staying around. I think it is a major **** up by Sumlin not to keep him around.

i love dat. i was in school for his last two years as a starter. i dont know that i'll ever see a more instintinctive, productive linebacker on the field.

that being said, i think dat was a bit out of place as a college coach. good football mind, but meh on the recruiting trail. our inside LBs did get better, but i dont know that he was anything irreplaceable as a coach.

that being said, it was pretty fantastic to see him on the sidelines. wouldnt surprise me at all for dat to get out of coaching all together. he's got a number of irons in the fire as far as the business world goes.

A&M? I'm pretty sure Santos was an Okie State commit before he switched to Tennessee.

We told the Van coaches that we did not have room for Santos but we wished we did because he is a good one. That was when he was committed to aggy.

It is NO rumor...
It's being reported by the guys on Hookem.com that Dalton Santos has been offered and will be visiting next weekend, just prior to the Dead period... Jan. 27-29 weekend!

Hookem.com is reporting that this has been something that blew up in the last 2-3, maybe 4-5 days... more in the coming days as news comes in.

Was surprised to hear he was visiting Texas on Vol sports radio this morning. They're pretty pissed - including former QB (and pill popper) Eric Ainge who said something along the lines of, "he'll go to Texas after our coaches lie to him." I actually tried to call in but got to school before I could get through. A couple of weeks ago, TN let 2 or 3 recruits - that had been verbally committed for months - go because something better came along. Additionally, they just inked a recruit this past weekend that most schools backed off of because he got arrested for stealing IPODs out of the Georgia locker room last year on a recruiting visit. So, this POS can EABOD questioning the morality of the Texas coaching staff.

As to Santos... He apparently grew up a big Horn fan but did not get offered. He came close to giving ATM a verbal, then verbally committed to TN. TN had several coaches - including DC Wilcox - leave so Santos turned his verbal into a soft commitment and has been looking elsewhere. He visited Georgia recently but said he's "99.9% committed to TN" as of last week.

Apparently, his father/family has stated that they will move to the city that Santos ends up playing in which may be a pretty big deal with his ultimate decision. Seems as if signing with your boyhood (and family's boyhood) favorite would be a done deal when factoring in a move across three states as opposed to just playing down the road.

So, ultimately, he will either honor his original commitment to TN or follow his heart.

BTW, one more factor in his decision will be how much he truly wants to be a LB. IMO, his size puts him at DE at Texas or (at least initially) LB for TN. I have a hard time believing that he'd suit up at LB for TX given the spread and pass happy offenses that comprise the Big 12.

from looking at him, i think he's carrying a lot of unhealthy weight that time in a college S&C program will help.

that being said, i still think his future is at DE and not ILB.
