Dallas choking another big lead

Was 17, now 3 with 6 minutes to go. These guys can choke more big leads then any team in NBA history.

Refs impose their will again and call Dirk for a charge that could have basically sealed the game. Wow. These guys really do find a way to make the wrong call down the stretch that can totally change the game.

Mavs do make it exciting at the end don't they? But, their toughness enabled them to withstand Portland's final charge. This team is much better than the 2006 team. Will be interesting to see if our "points in the paint" game will be able to keep it up against that Lakers frontline. Would love to beat them, but it'll be a hard go.

Wake up Nuke. You're still dreaming.
69 is correct.
Kidd now>>>>Harris then
Jet now>>>>>Jet then
Butler/Marion = Howard/Stack
Chandler/Haywood/Minhimi>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>> Damp/Diop/Mbenga
Carlisle>>>>>>>>>Avery

Mavs may or may not beat the lakers, but I doubt that you would find many Mavs fans that would trade this team for that one.

Except Butler is hurt and not playing, so not sure that you can include him for the purposes of this discussion.

It is an interesting discussion. After reading the posts I am still not sure which way I would go. The defense on the 2006 team was really good and Avery is a very good defensive coach. Chandler is such an integral part of this team now and he is a heck of a defensive presence/rebounder. It also seems like Dirk has gotten better, if that is even possible (probably the result of having Kidd on the team).

But for once, I am having a hard time picking a side on this debate.

You gotta look at Matchups. Take the 06 team against this years Lakers team. You really want a matchup of Diop or Damp against Bynum and Dirk covering PG? I do like Josh Howard on Kobe a lot more then what the Mavs have now. I do think the 06 team was a bit better, but they were mainly as good as Howard was. If Howard played well they won. If not they struggled. Chandler is the key this year. He has to be able to win the center matchup with Bynum or the Mavs have no chance. Holding his own won't be enough. He's got to find a way to control the paint. If the Mavs have to help at all, look for PG to get a lot of points.

back to the original post, it was eerily similar to game 4, when in game 6 Dirk got called for that charging foul. It was very obvious to me, no way that is a charge.

It's almost like because Dirk has no reputation for being a good driver, we're gonna call him for charging.

will be very interesting to see the ref. treatment Dirk gets against LA.

This series will not be decided by officiating. Every game has questionable calls, but one of the challenges of the road team is to overcome the home crowd and the refs. Mavs have shown lots of intensity on the road this season. Would love for them to win one of the first 2.

Nuke - We've had these discussions before. You under-value Marion compared to Josh Howard. His toughness and intensity far outweighs JH, which is what the Mavs have so badly needed. Kidd vs Harris: We have to agree to disagree. I want J-Kidd on my team as long as he has 2 legs to hold him up. You also don't acknowledge the shooting and even occasional D from Peja - but his shooting is better than Stack's. You also assume Dirk is just the same player he was 5 years ago. No, no, no. Much improved. Way better - and he was voted MVP that year!

Wad - You play despite the refs calls. Mavs weren't getting calls tonight but they kept grinding and they fared well down the stretch. And they made the Lakers look like the chokers. Think about that one.

And Rex - I"m crazy, but not nuts.

Peja even in his prime was never much more than a shooter with an impressively quick release, but now there isn't one single facet of the game other than outside shooting that he is even average at for an NBA player.

I don't think is better or worse than he was in 2006. I do think that, just like in 2006 when he usually drove when Duncan guarded him and posted up when Bowen guarded him, he needs to try and take Bynum to the hole. He did that a few times tonight and it worked - Bynum isn't a bad defender but he's just not quick enough to keep up with Dirk if Dirk really sets his mind on getting to the rim. If he ends up able to drive past Gasol as well, what can LA do? Put Artest on him? Then Dirk just posts up - yeah Artest could body him up well, but Dirk can just turn and shoot right over him like he isn't there.

I think Carlisle is going to get every ounce of Defense out of them. Apparently Kidd wanted to guard Kobe at the end, and by god it worked.

Stat, don't you think you'd start Brewer instead of Stevenson in Game 2? 2 guys that played at opposite ends of the spectrum tonight.

Sorry Stat - I must have you mixed up with Nuclear Bear.

He had a solid first half or 2/3's of the season -primarily as the starter in Quarters 1 and 3 at the 2-Guard. Tough, aggressive defense and could drain 3's like nobody else. BUT, since then he has struggled, at least offensively and his play Monday Night was atrocious.

Good start so far for Stevenson. Those points keeping the Mavs in this one with Marion looking lost out there.

Ya Know what.

If the Mavs finish the job on the Lakers I will change my mind and said they are equal to the 2006 team.

If they make it to the Finals I willl put them ahead of the 2006 and 2007 teams.

Im very happy for what they've done in Los Angeles, but one thing is crystal clear to me.....the 2006 San Antonio team that we beat is much better then this Lakers team.

Even if you say they are equal to the 2006 team, you will still be insulting them.
I don't know if you saw Sportsday on air night before last, but they ran a story showing how much better Dirk is now than he was then. He's on a completely different level now, & I didn't even mention that above. I don't know if you heard Dirk say Chandler was the most positive person that he's EVER been around, & what a difference that makes off the court as well. This team has so much more heart, cohesiveness, & other immeasurables than the 06 squad, that this thread shouldn't even be happening. Every NBA fan knows that the old Mavs woulda collapsed after Portland game 4. Again, this shouldn't even be a discussion. If Butler comes back next series, this will be a pretty salty squad to contend with.

And Rex - I think you might wanna look in the mirror & reconsider your previous analysis.
